The Kentucky county clerk who is stopping gay couples from being marriedbecause of her literal interpretation of the Bible has herself been married four times and conceived twins by having sex outside her marriage, according to court records.

Kim Davis, 49, who has defied the U.S. Supreme Court and continues to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same sex-couples, was married and divorced three times โ€” in 1994, 2006 and 2008, according to U.S. News & World Report.

She gave birth to twins five months after she divorced her first husband. The father of those twins was her third husband, according to the records.

Her second husband adopted the twins, the news magazine said.

She has twice married current husband Ed Davis.

The Rowan County clerk's refusal to conform to a Supreme Court ruling has garnered death threats from opponents and resounding praise from conservative Christians.

The clerk, whose mother was her predecessor in the clerk's office, said Tuesday she feared going to hell if she issued marriage certificates to homosexuals.

She was ordered to appear before a federal judge Thursday to explain why she should not be held in contempt.

Her past marriages and apparent adultery raised questions of hypocrisy, but her supporters said her past actions did not matter because she has been born again since then.

In last year's election, she told the Morehead News, "The public is my boss. Being a public servant is ingrained in me and I want (to) continue providing the high level of customer service we do while treating people with respect, kindness, and helping them with whatever situation they have."
