But officials told local media Wednesday that no additional structures are in immediate danger.
Bruce MacDonald with the North Carolina Forest Service said the fire was only about 25 percent contained Wednesday night.
The fire that started Tuesday afternoon has burned about 550 acres.
No injuries have been reported.
MacDonald said the fire has moved away from developed areas and into rugged woods near the Buncombe-McDowell county line.
Crews are using bulldozers and other heavy equipment to work on fire lines around the blaze.
MacDonald says officials do not know how the fire started.
Virginia Maloyed said she was glad her family escaped. Her mobile home was damaged by the heat. She said the fire moved quickly.
