Record breaking cold weather blankets U.S. - 85% surface area at or below freezing

Tuesday morning, America 'as a whole' awoke to the coldest it has been in November since 1976 -- 38 years ago. The Lower-48 or CONUS spatially average temperature plummeted overnight to only 19.4°F typical of mid-winter not November 18th! Data

An astounding 226-million Americans will experience at or below freezing temperatures (32°F) on Tuesday as well -- if you venture outdoors.

More than 85% of the surface area of the Lower-48 reached or fell below freezing Tuesday morning. All 50-states saw at or below freezing temperatures on Tuesday.

Record lows from Idaho to Nebraska and Iowa south to Texas and east through the Great Lakes, the eastern 2/3 of the US will shatter decades-long and in some cases, century-long records. Temperatures east of the Rockies will be 20-40°F below climate normals.

Compared to normal, temperatures over the past several days have dropped off a cliff -- to 10°C below climate normal -- more anomalous than even during the polarvortex of early January. Anomaly Chart. November is shaping up to be a colder-than-normal month by a lot.

Brisk northwesterly winds in the Great Lakes will cause heavy lake effect snow which will be measured in feet from Michigan to New York state. Monday, almost half of the Lower-48 was blanketed in snow. Please visit Mashable and Washington Post Capital Weather Gang for daily updates.

Cold air pushes east thru Wednesday with a reinforcing shot of Arctic air with origin from the North Pole & Siberia to arrive on Thursday in the Great Lakes. Any relief is is 5-6 days away as Chicago, Minneapolis, and Detroit will struggle to rise above freezing until Saturday.

Record Low Predictor Selected cities overnight lows (°F) forecast by NOAA GFS model with locations circled indicating potential record-lows for Nov 18th. A total of 29 locations set or break a record low. 40 stations come within 1°F and 80 within 3°F of a record. These cities are from the "Threaded-Extremes" dataset which diligently assembles historical station information often back into the 1900s or even 1870s. The forecast model temperature data is compared from midnight-to-midnight to determine potential record lows.

Their decline is the canary in the coal mine of a dying ocean. "Our guys in Santa Barbara are saying there's almost nothing down there. Just a lot of warm, clear water, a little bit of salmon and not much else," said Zeke Grader.

In 16 Ocean passages I have watched the sea life die away. I believe it is related to a combination of events. Hypoxia, acidification due to anthropogenic climate change, over-fishing and the 300 tons of radioactive water cascading into the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima Daiichi won't be helping.

Either way we bear witness to the death of our oceans.

yeah, come on, troll away. The Southern Oceans are drenched in cold to offset and best the Northern Oceans warmth. When you add up all the oceans and landmasses, then you have the global picture. It's getting colder.
Believing in Global Warming is along the same lines as believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. An act and a dance.
Feedback loop theories won't hold water, being nothing more than fudge factors to feed into biased models.
Cherry-picking won't save a failed hypothesis.
Global Warming is over, being part of a natural cycle dominated by forces beyond the Earth.

The vast glaciers of western Antarctica are rapidly melting and losing ice to the sea and almost certainly have "passed the point of no return," according to new work by two separate teams of scientists.

The likely result: a rise in global sea levels of 4 feet or more in the coming centuries, says research made public Monday by scientists at the University of Washington, the University of California-Irvine and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"It really is an amazingly distressing situation," says Pennsylvania State University glaciologist Sridhar Anandakrishnan, who was not affiliated with either study. "This is a huge part of West Antarctica, and it seems to have been kicked over the edge."

The researchers say the fate of the glaciers is almost certainly beyond hope.

One study shows that a river of ice called Thwaites Glacier is probably in the early stages of collapse. Total collapse is almost inevitable, the study shows.

A second study shows that a half-dozen glaciers are pouring ice into the sea at an ever-greater pace. That will trigger 4 feet of sea-level rise, says study author Eric Rignot, a glaciologist at the University of California-Irvine, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"The retreat of ice in that area is unstoppable," Rignot said at a briefing Monday, adding that the glaciers have "passed the point of no return."

Ah don't go citing 'peer reviewed' papers now, the whole peer review process is open to corruption and cronyism and YOU KNOW IT. There are plenty of other bone fide scientists who disagree with the 'peer reviewed' papers, but their papers don't get peer reviewed! See how it works! The point being, even the UN had to admit that the last 17 years have been flat in terms of temperatures, and there is other data that shows a decrease in temps over the last 7 years.

The (other) point being; no one is disagreeing that the planet has been warming in recent history, but it has done so before, and when you include factors like a solar minimum and compare to historical solar minimum and the NATURAL swings between rising and falling temps, it is reasonable to suggest that we could be heading or a decades-long ice age in the NH rather than a decades-long heating of the globe.

Oh, and in case I forget, warming is obviously not man-made any more than ice-ages are. Warmists are so narcissistic. Everything has to revolve around humans.

Dear snow-trolls: Winter weather does not refute global warming

If you live in the United States, you have been feeling insanely cold lately. The area south of Buffalo got five feet of snow yesterday -- an extreme winter weather outburst that is being blamed for a tragic five deaths -- and the Weather Channel says that parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region may experience "one of the longest sub-freezing spells on record for the month of November." But the whole United States has been quite cold. In Washington, D.C., last night, a weather emergency was announced due to the expectation of extremely cold temperatures.

We've been through this drill before -- last winter, actually. And it's important to keep in mind that just because it is very cold in the United States doesn't mean that you should question the overall warming trend for the planet. Weather shifts heat and cold around -- we know that. We also know our own local experiences inherently bias us, since we live the weather in only one place. Western Antarcica rapidly melting

The same ( aditional anti-photons ) energy friezing the north hemisphere in the way in is heating the south hemisphere.
Check the details with Miles Mathis`s charge ( photon/anti-photon) recycling.

Several new poles are forming in the north: North america, north western europe and in the south: eastern Antarctica/South Indian Ocean.

This explains western Antarctica melting against eastern Antarctica Ice record breaking.

It is entirely unnecessary to delete comments. They are written. Though most of us received (when we were the weakest and most malleable) a great deal and vast majority of our 'education' in a confined (ie., authoritarian, restrictive--we were physically confined) classroom full of sensory (ie., including auditory) experience, to go with this pervasive, invasive confinement, where some noisy student could be a 'problem' (mostly to the teacher though, the authoritarian figure), this (Sott forum) is not the same as that. Not anywhere near the same.

For a mature person on an adult site, which I would hope Sott is, it seems as though it should be relatively easy to merely look past a comment and move to the next, or to read no comments at all. This should include authoritarian/editor figures, such as you are making of yourself now. In fact, it might be desireable for each individual to learn this skill without the assistance of authoritarian intervention, to lose some of that 'virtue'.

Joe, are you able to understand this? I realize and take into account, that your time is short and very valuable to you as you attempt to do your job, correctly. This is typical of editors, it was where I have been before this.

Joe, if you are question of what I am attempting to convey, please read more of someone like Jon Rappoport, who is a staunch defender of what he calls 'the individual'. I do not at the same time, claim he is an authority, but he does have this sense

When you die, the whole thing goes, it matters little whether you froze to death or burned to death, you're dead. When your body fails, it fails. Sure there is value to science, but most of that value is now corrupted,

I am a farmer and live in the natural environment much more than most people. I work with various animals a great deal which allows me to understand minds in a broader range than just that of the 'certified social human'--the present ego type.

In some ways, then, I am more of an expert, so to speak.

Once upon a time, I read many, many, many books. Now, I no longer do and am just an unruly poet-farmer and occasional weird ass fuck commenter that apparently nobody can figure out.

And yet I have always been a naturalist or a follower of the Tao. The Tao creates confusion, sometimes, a collision with the paycheck. This is difficult, almost unbearable.....

One thing I learned along the way, is that many things that are conveyed at a certain time by the correctly functioning Tao, only come to be understood at a later time by the disabled adult. Very often, a much later time.

In the meantime, the paycheck rules.

Hot on the heels of NASA’s recent announcement that October of 2014 was tied for hottest on record in its global climate measure, NOAA today also made a two record-breaking announcements.

First, according to NOAA’s measure, global surface temperatures were 0.74 degrees Celsius above average for October. This makes the month the hottest in NOAA’s measure since record keeping began.

Second, as of the middle of October, global temperature averages for the year had edged out all the previous hottest years on record. This makes 2014 the hottest year on record so far with just two months left to go.

Crucial because it again brings light to the fact that the so-called global warming pause is little more an artifact of cherry picking and over-playing to the influences of decadal natural variability than it is any measure of challenge to an observed 136 year warming 15-20 times more rapid than the warm-up at the end of the last ice age. So WHAT??

While you people are arguing about who is RIGHT and WRONG, the problems on the planet continue unabated.

Does it really matter? Does being RIGHT mean so freakin' much to you that you need to continually argue this bullshit while apparently spending NO time actually doing something constructive and helpful for the seemingly dying planet and its indigenous species?

Instead, we might warm those who are cold, cool those who are warm. We might also feed those who are hungry, shelter those who are homeless, and comfort those who are afraid. This, to me, seems more productive. Whether it's "cooling" or "warming," there are people and animals suffering worldwide who need our attention, and the reality and truth of the situation will soon be obvious to all, anyway.

Facts are facts. Im sure some comments are deleted because some get outright rude, in my case cynical/sarcastic with a certain intent in mind.

Sott, some of us value all the input from people, even the rude suckers. Thats part of evaluation. It provides insight into not only various facts/sources but also the mindsets of those out there. Debunkers stand out pretty easy on this site. If this site was 'politically correct' or 'thin pantied' I wouldnt waste my time reading/commenting. Those that provide input are often of more use than anything.

Let 'us' decide, even if it does get a little school yard level now and then. We dont lay down with a bloody nose, we get back up.

only do we have the hottest year on record, right now while northern New York is getting early winter, there is no snow in Anchorage! In a place where it should be, it isn't. The jet stream has lost it's cohesion because of the heat trapped in the oceans. The heat produces massive amounts of moisture in the air which shows up as floods or snow (and then floods). But where it should be cold, Greenland and Alaska for two, it is warm. The Gulf of Mex. has generated so much heat that the gulf stream , going into Canadian and Arctic waters is melting everything. GLACIER national park has a fraction of the glaciers it did when I saw it in (only) 1974. Water in all the wrong places.
You may get flamed but you are correct and it has nothing to do with Al Gore!!
