A 70 year old woman was on Thursday trampled to death by an elephant in Ghazi village, Voi, withinTaita Taveta County.

Her daughter Elina Mwakio, said the deceased met her death while she was fetching firewood in a nearby forest frequented by elephants in search of grazing fields.

"We heard screams from the forest, when we rushed there we found our mother already dead," Mwakio said, adding that the body had been taken to Voi district hospital mortuary.

Locals said the attack happened a few hours after Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel had visited the area and assured them of security against attacks from wild animals.

Taita Taveta County, which boarders Tsavo National Park, has in the past reported several cases of human and wildlife conflicts prompting locals to call for KWS to erect electric fences around the park.
