The following post-referendum poll from Lord Ashcroft does a good summary of who voted how and why. However, the most telling distinction is the following:

Voters aged 16-17: YES: 71%; NO: 29%
Voters aged 65+: YES: 27%; NO: 73%

How will last night's vote look like in 5, 10 or 15 years when today's 17 year olds are Scotland's prime demographic?

16/17 years old are very impressionable by the views of peers and teachers at school but when they leave school they see a broader range of views from work colleagues of various age ranges and backgrounds so will change their views. So the idea that a 16/17 year old will spend their whole life with the same view is not accurate. Under 24 and you follow your idols (parents, teachers, friends) view; 24 to 50 vote for what is the best for your kids and their health and making mortgage payments easier; 50 to 65 vote for the best health, tax breaks and pensions; over 65 vote for the one who stops you freezing to death in winter.
