A "fully armed" suspect has opened fire at cars and a bus in the area, local police said. Witnesses reported hearing at least one shotgun blast and several handgun shots.
UCLA Medical Center officials confirm that two people have been hospitalized and are in critical condition, while one is in a serious but not life-threatening condition, CNN reports.
One suspect has reportedly been detained in the school's library and taken into custody. The police are now checking reports of a possible second shooter.
"We are aware of at least one suspect, there may possibly be others," said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Denise Joslin.
Before the shooting spree the suspect reportedly set fire to a nearby house, tried to break into another and carjacked two vehicles. A Los Angeles fire official has confirmed that firemen found two bodies inside the burned home near the shooting scene.
The incident happened miles from where President Barack Obama is appearing at a fundraiser. The Secret Service said that the shooting is not impacting the president's visit and is considered a local police matter at this point, NBC reported.
The 38-acre college campus, as well as all other Santa Monica schools, were on lockdown following the incident.

"A gunman killed at least six people in Santa Monica, California on Friday, before he was shot to death himself by police at the library of a community college, Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said. A woman injured during the shooting rampage that ended at Santa Monica College died, officials from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center said. Two other people have been confirmed dead inside a home that was set on fire in Santa Monica, law enforcement sources said.
Authorities said a gunman allegedly set the home on fire, opened fire on several cars and appeared to try to carjack two vehicles. One of the attempted carjackings occurred near the campus library and college police station.
The suspect fled to the library, where he was shot to death by police, according to the Santa Monica police chief."
