Good question. A multitude of factors, but one that comes to mind is ignorance of the reality of the situation. Social conditioning is another part of that factor. We don't really 'think' for ourselves in an objective way.
The unfortunate truth is that the vast majority of the worlds population are stuck in illusion. And another sad truth is that people will keep on doing the same thing over and over again until we all learn our lessons. This has been reflected over the path humanity has taken throughout history.
The time for learning lessons however, is slowly running out. We may already be past a critical point.

I've walked on fire many times, over the last 6 years, and it doesn't hurt. Fire walking is a common thing in my community actually, not some bizarro event. There are ways to do it correctly. I'd be curious to know what went wrong.
