Rabbit droppings found in southeast Washington contain a radioactive material.

The animal waste was found within 100 yards of a facility recently demolished as part of the environmental cleanup at the Hanford Site. The 586-square-mile site produced nuclear materials for the U.S. government from the 1940s until the late '80s.

It was the home of nine nuclear reactors used to produce plutonium, which was needed for atomic weapons.

Eighteen rabbits were found in the area, but only one tested positive for exposure to anything radioactive.

There is an animal control program in place for the Hanford Site to guard against the threat of contamination.

Workers have now fenced off the area of the most recent discovery. They also removed food sources and sprayed it with the scent of a predator to keep animals away.

The Department of Energy says the contaminated droppings do not pose a threat to the public.
