Monday January 23, 2006 The Guardian The Russian security service, the FSB,
last night named as spies four employees of the British embassy in
Moscow, showing them on state television allegedly collecting
intelligence using hi-tech gadgets and funding non-governmental
organisations (NGOs).
It marks the Putin administration's most bold attempt to expose western intelligence work in Russia. The FSB caught the unit late last year, a documentary on state-run Rossiya TV reported. An FSB spokesman confirmed to the Guardian that his agency had accused the four men of being spies. "They have not been arrested. How could we? They are all diplomats." He declined to say what information they had tried to acquire. "They used hi-tech, new gadgets to communicate with [Russian] agents, with citizens of another country who gather intelligence." |

Monday January 23, 2006 The Guardian Georgia's president, Mikhail Saakashvili,
accused Russia of sabotage and "outrageous blackmail" yesterday
after explosions cut off gas supplies from his country's
energy-rich neighbour.
Two simultaneous explosions at 3am yesterday cut through both tubes of a gas pipeline just on the Russian side of the border with Georgia. Another blast struck an important electricity pylon nearby nine hours later. The three blasts left Georgia with limited supplies of Russian gas for heating. It also meant Georgia could only supply about 40% of the electricity demanded by its 3 million inhabitants in temperatures of -5C (23F). |

22 January 2006 Britain's embassies have been told to tighten security after diplomats in Israel suffered the Foreign Office's worst ever fraud. The scale of the scam, which cost the Tel Aviv embassy at least £790,000, is revealed in a report by the official spending watchdog released last week. The National Audit Office report also reveals that the Foreign Office has given up hope of recovering hundreds of thousands of pounds in fraudulently-inflated bonus payments paid to local staff. |

23 Jan 06 An Israeli court heard arguments over the
sentencing of Omri Sharon, the son of stricken Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon, who faces possible prison after pleading guilty to
corruption charges.
Attorney General Menahem Mazuz intends to ask the Tel Aviv court to jail Omri to make an example out of the former MP, who belonged to the right-wing Likud party that his father formerly led, judicial sources said Monday. Omri, who pleaded guilty to providing false testimony and falsifying documents, has tried in vain to reach a bargain in which he would be sentenced for a symbolic six-month stint of community work. |

23 Jan 06 Despite the growing bilateral ties, Shi
said neither China nor the Saudis would want to alarm the United
States.
"China will be very cautious, it won't buy oilfields in Saudi Arabia. That would make the US very sensitive," Shi said. Beijing also hopes Riyadh will be an ally on Middle East issues, such as Iran's nuclear standoff with the United States, according to Shi. Comment: Yeah, right!

16 Jan 06 American ambassador to the United Nations
John Bolton has sent a sharply worded letter to Secretary-General
Kofi Annan, threatening to cut U.S. funding to the U.N. if the
world body continues to promote anti-Israel events.
Bolton's January 3 letter came in response to an event at the U.N. celebrating the annual "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People." At the event, which was attended by Annan and other top diplomats, speakers stood before a map of the Middle East that did not show the state of Israel. "Given that we now have a world leader pursuing nuclear weapons who is calling for the state of Israel to be wiped off the map, the issue has even greater salience," Mr. Bolton wrote, referring to Iranian President Mamoud Ahmadinejad’s statement to that effect in October. The organizer of the event was the Division for Palestinian Rights, which received $5,449,600 in the 2004-05 U.N. budget, the New York Sun reports. |

AmericanFreePress A new year is a good time to review one
of the principles of general semantics. Not only are all things
unique, but all things are in a constant process of change. Alfred
Korzybski, who is the father of general semantics, devised a
learning tactic to help students remember it.
It simply states that cow-1 is not cow-2. Similarly, the United States-2006 is not the same as the United States-1945. Of course, when we actively think about it, we say, “Sure, that’s obvious.” For some reason, though, the human mind tends to forget that and to blur the identity of something by mixing it all up with memories. When I think of the United States, images from my childhood come to mind—the great generation coming home triumphant from the good war; the industrial might of the United States; peaceful, prosperous cities; and a benevolent government that left most people alone. The United States-2006, however, is no longer a great industrial power. The industrial base has been seriously eroded. Government has expanded to gargantuan proportions and can no longer be called benevolent. One survey a few years back showed that a full one-third of the American people fear the government. It has become intrusive and secretive. Franklin Roosevelt managed a truly global war, with 12 million Americans under arms, using a White House staff of about 15 people. There are now thousands on the White House staff, and they can’t even manage a very small war in a little country. Running over poorly trained troops in obsolete equipment is a long way from standing toe to toe with the Wehrmacht or the Japanese Imperial Army. |

CBC News The H5N1 strain of avian flu may be so
deadly to bird cells because of a protein it produces, a genetic
study suggests.
Researchers in the U.S. performed the first major genetic analysis of more than 300 flu viruses that have infected people, birds and pigs on four continents. The H5N1 virus has killed 83 people, according to the World Health Organization, and has forced countries to cull millions of birds. |

A minor earthquake shook part of central
Utah, officials said. There were no reports of injury or
damage.
The quake, which measured 3.8 on the Richter scale, happened Thursday at 11:47 p.m. in Castle Valley, said Walter Arabasz, director of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations. A quake of 4.0 magnitude can do moderate damage. Arabasz said the epicenter was 8 miles east-southeast of Castle Dale and 30 miles south of Price in an unpopulated area of the San Rafael Swell. The earthquake occurred in the same area as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake in August 1988. |

charlotteobserver.com 26 Jan 06 Workers at Grandfather Mountain described
"an unreal" scene early Wednesday when record wind gusts of at
least 200 mph battered the North Carolina tourist attraction in the
northwest mountains.
"Our workers who were inside the Visitor Center said it was like a tornado -- a whirlwind -- inside the building after the windows broke," said Crae Morton, president of Grandfather Mountain and grandson of Hugh Morton, who developed the tourist site. Morton said staff members don't know exactly how strong the northwest winds really blew late Tuesday night and early Wednesday. The National Weather Service-approved anenometer measures only up to 200 mph. Morton said gusts reached that level several times. He said the staff assumes winds exceeded that mark. |

Jeff Wells Rigorous Intuition Dr Albert
Hoffman, the "father of LSD," but perhaps better described as
its midwife,
turned 100 a few days ago. Like so many other things we trip
over this fraught century, lysergic acid diethylamide first
appeared in Nazi-dominated Europe, and first through dreams and
intuition.
Hoffman was looking for compounds that induced muscle contraction. After synthesizing LSD and testing it on animals to no useful effect Hoffman's research moved on. But strangely, he began to dream repeatedly about its molecular structure, and was gripped by a "peculiar presentiment" that compelled him, five years later, to resynthesize the compound and ingest it intentionally. "In the annals of science," Daniel Pinchbeck writes in Breaking Open the Head, "it is notable that many scientific insights first appear in dreams and visions": The German chemist Friedrich Kekule, for instance, dreamt of a snake with its tail in its mouth, and understood that the molecular structure of benzene was a closed carbon ring. The French mathematician Jules-Henri Poincaré, during a sleepless night, saw mathematical symbols colliding until they coalesced into equations. These intuitive levels of insight, whether scientific or artistic, function like the prophetic dreams of shamans.... Hoffman's discovery of LSD was that kind of insight - a flash from a deeper order of the self or, perhaps, from outside the self entirely. How did the Amazonian shamans come to discover their complex psychoactive compound of ayahuasca? They say the plants taught them in dreams. And intuition seemed to lead the synthesis of DMT in 1931, nearly 20 years before it was discovered to be a naturally occuring alkaloid in plants. (It wasn't until 1972 that it was found to be an endogenous compound, produced by the human brain.) Pinchbeck records his ceremonial ingestion of ayahuasca: The hallucinations started to deepen into a realm that I could not recognize, that I lack language to describe. I found myself wandering across a shimmering space with beings that never stopped changing - porcupine-quilled, tusked, multitongued, amoebic, but even those words are only approximations of entities that could be compared to the darker imaginings of HP Lovecraft. The shaman and the elders seemed to be inhabiting this space with me. Glowing in the light cast by the fire, their features seemed animated by an almost nonhuman intensity. They sang, their words unintelligible, to these creatures, interacting with them, in mystical communion. It seemed that this was the goal of the ayahuasca ceremony, the arrival point. These were "the heavenly people." The scene is similar to that described by Robert Monroe in Journeys Out of the Body of a hellish layer close to our mundane reality through which he would pass while projecting his astral self, which felt like bait above "a gray-black hungry ocean where the slightest motion attracts nibbling and tormenting beings." He writes that "it is easy to conclude that a momentary penetration of this nearby layer would bring 'demons' and 'devils' to mind as the chief inhabitants." It also recalls the hallucinatory witness to shapeshifting in some accounts of mind control survivors. DMT frequently induces similar visions of interstellar voids, hungry insectoid intelligences and abduction scenarios indistinguishable from those of UFO encounters, including alien intercourse. Here "Rex" describes his controlled injection in Dr Rick Strassman's DMT: The Spirit Molecule: When I was first going under there were these insect creatures all around me. They were clearly trying to break through. I was fighting letting go of who I am or was.... They were interested in emotion. As I was holding on to my last thought, that God equals love, they said, "Even here? Even here?" I said, "Yes, of course." They were still there but I was making love to them at the same time. They feasted as they made love to me.... The thought came to me with certainty that they were manipulating my DNA, changing its structure. Strassman ended his clinical studies of the drug in part because he gave serious weight to the warning of a "highly intuitive" friend who told him she saw "evil spirits hovering around you. They want to come through this plane, using you and the drugs." If there are many dimensions beyond, or behind, those we normally inhabit, it would seem by the congruity of experience that there are a variety of means to their unlocking. Yet all of them - occult workings, remote viewing, astral projection, UFO abductions and shamanic chemistry - share the trait of inducing altered states of consciousness. And something else they share is the abiding, deep attention of military intelligence. At this point, someone's likely to mention the "holographic universe" and its alleged implication that "nothing is real." Perhaps instead it means that everything is real, including the "imaginal realm" described by French Islamic scholar Henry Corbin in his 1972 work, Mundis Imaginalis: Upon returning [from a mystical vision] the beholders of this world are perfectly aware of having been "elsewhere": they are not mere schizophrenics. This world is hidden behind the very act of sense perception and has to be sought underneath its apparent objective certainty. For this reason we definitely cannot qualify it as being imaginary in the current sense of the word, ie, unreal or nonexistent. [It] is ontologically as real as the world of the senses and that of the intellect [perceived by] the "psychospiritual senses." Psychologist Kenneth Ring talks of "the shamanizing of modern humanity" in his book The Omega Project, which studies the commonality of Near-Death Experience and UFO encounters. Ring writes that "we could be in the beginning stages of a major shift in levels of consciousness that will eventually lead to humanity's being able to live in two worlds at once - the physical and the imaginal." He believes that NDEs and UFOs, like the mystical and visionary states found in shamanic ritual, may be adventing at this time as an evolutionary aid towards the development of "latent capacities for imaginal perception." I'm not sure I agree with Ring's rosy conclusions drawn from the evident thinning of the veil. I wonder instead whether a nexus of powerful parties on both sides of the portal with investments in control are conspiring to exploit gateways, the result of which may mean a near blunt-force stunting of the development of human consciousness. I know this is highly speculative, but it's one of those crazy thoughts I have when I look up and see grids in the sky where there were none before, and marvel at the calculation behind our conspicuous dumbing down. What is it about us that is being suppressed, and who most profits by it? Comment: Jeff Wells is
asking the right questions at the end of his piece. The lure of
these other realms works on those who are into phenomenon, into
experience, and into thinking there is a quick fix to higher
consciousness.
The New Age and Human Potential movements are full of this stuff. Each of the many techniques developed was fully capable of producing an emotional high of one sort or another. There were endless “peak experiences,” and dramatic “personal breakthroughs.” The mixtures of Zen, yoga, meditation, and drugs along with strict mechanical technology, were a veritable adventure in awareness! The only problem was: in the midst of all this peaking, mind-blowing, turning on and tuning in, ecstasy and encountering, many people encountered things that, perhaps, ought not have been awakened. Boundaries were breached into unseeable and terrifying realms of consciousness. William Chittick, translator of the works of the great Sufi Shaykh, Ibn al-’Arabi, wrote: Nowadays most people interested in the spirituality of the East desire the “experience,” though they may call what they are after intimate communion with God. Those familiar with the standards and norms of spiritual experience set down by disciplined paths like Sufism are usually appalled at the way Westerners seize upon any apparition from the domain outside of normal consciousness as a manifestation of the “spiritual.” In fact, there are innumerable realms in the unseen world, some of them far more dangerous than the worst jungles of the visible world. [Al-Arabi himself said: |
