AL-AHRAM 19 - 25 January 2006 Issue No. 778 International pressures on Tehran over
its nuclear programme have brought Iran to the threshold of an
entirely new phase in its post-revolutionary history. The Iranian
regime is no stranger to outside forces; the US has sustained a
virtually uninterrupted political, economic and technological
blockade against it since the 1979 revolution. However, never
before has it confronted an international community so unanimously
and determinedly ranged against it. It now appears almost
inevitable that the nuclear issue will be brought before the UN
Security Council and that Iran, for the first time in its history,
will face punitive measures.

After Iran decided last week to resume
research at a nuclear facility following a two- year moratorium,
the mood in Washington looked eerily reminiscent of the months
preceding the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, though with two
differences. The first was that the word "Iraq" was replaced by
"Iran". The second is that the high-riding rhetoric of the US
establishment before March 2003 was absent, the administration
speaking in restrained terms without clear threat of military
action.
Nonetheless, reading between the lines, efforts towards winning over a war-weary US public for a possible confrontation with Iran are well underway. The strategy was clearly at work this week with the spate of condemnations of Iran's nuclear programme drumming up fears among Americans. "This is an increasingly significant problem that the world is going to have to address," Vice President Dick Cheney told the Tony Snow radio programme on 11 January. |

Jan 20, 2006 Asia Times Online Just as Iran has been duplicitous and
underhanded in the ongoing nuclear negotiations, so too has the
leadership elite under the guise of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In
effect, Khamenei, after 16 years in power, has learned the delicate
and tactical process of manipulating the complicated political
system and its flamboyant actors.
While Khamenei is indeed the final arbiter and puppeteer of the Iranian political system, he has been using President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and his ideological international approach to moderate his own public image since Ahmadinejad was elected last summer. In this recent taqieh or dramatic passion play, Khamenei is the one character who will emerge from behind the political scenes having captured not only his domestic audience but also an international one. |

provided German passports to agents of the Israeli secret
intelligence service, or MOSSAD, to facilitate operations the
Middle East, reporters alleged.
The allegations raised by a former BND official found their way into the German newspaper Koelner Stadtanzieger and the Israeli daily Jerusalem Post, and imply that MOSSAD agents are disguising themselves as German citizens in order to perform their "sensitive" tasks in the Middle East. |

The Canadian Press TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran is moving its
foreign exchange reserves out of European banks as a protection
against any possible UN sanctions over its nuclear program, the
country's Central Bank Governor said Friday.
Ebrahim Sheibani told reporters that Iran began withdrawing its foreign exchange reserves from European banks and transferring them to an undisclosed location, the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency reported. Iran is facing possible referral to the UN Security Council for its refusal to give up its uranium enrichment program. The council has the power to impose economic and political sanctions. |
