19 Jan 2006 More than fifty years ago two of the most
powerful labor unions—the American Federation of Labor and
the Congress of Industrial Workers—merged into one. Since
that time union membership has steadily declined. In 1953,
thirty-six percent of private-sector workers belonged to unions;
today that percentage has dwindled to less than eight percent. Most
American workers are now classified as ‘at will’
employees who have no protection against their employers. At will
employees can be terminated at any time at the discretion of their
employer, for no reason at all, with virtually no recourse to the
legal system for redress of their grievances. This is an
intolerable situation that exposes workers to widespread abuse by
their employers.

19 Jan 2006 Slowly but surely, pension issues have
become the new front in the class war being waged on ordinary
Americans. And what is particularly disturbing is politicians and
media pundits who constantly portray those who have managed to
secure decent pensions as greedy and evil.
Big Money interests want us to believe that workers who earn a decent pension are evil - as if retirement security is something we shouldn't all aspire to. We saw this during the New York City transit strike, where the political Establishment tried to pit the working class against itself and deflect attention from the real culprits, essentially saying the transit workers were evil for having banded together to secure decent wages/pensions, and that they should just accept economic persecution like other workers are forced to accept. And we are now seeing it again in the debate over state public pensions. |

January 19, 2006 ATLANTA - Home Depot Inc., which is
stepping up its move into markets beyond its core retail business,
on Thursday said it would open 400 to 500 stores over the next five
years, cutting its retail store growth.
The home improvement retailer, which is holding its analyst meeting in Atlanta, said it expects per-share profit growth of 10 percent to 14 percent for 2006, prior to its purchase of materials supplier Hughes Supply. It said per-share profit growth for 2005 should be at the high end of a range of 17 percent to 18 percent. Comment: Given the
slowing housing market that has been more than ripe for a nice
crash for quite awhile now, somehow we doubt that Home Depot will
be bringing in the sales to support another 400-500 stores in the
next five years.

CBC News The U.S. trade deficit is a bigger threat
to the domestic economy than either the federal budget deficit or
consumer debt and could lead to "political turmoil," billionaire
investor Warren Buffett has warned.
"Right now, the rest of the world owns $3 trillion US more of us than we own of them," Buffett told business students and faculty at the University of Nevada in Reno. "In my view, it will create political turmoil at some point. Pretty soon, I think there will be a big adjustment," he said without elaborating. |

SAN JOSE, California (AP) -- The Bush administration, seeking to revive an online pornography law struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, has subpoenaed Google Inc. for details on what its users have been looking for through its popular search engine. Comment:
Well, let's think about this for a second. Imagine, for the sake of argument, that Bush and his administration doesn't really care about child safety. Just imagine that they are your normal politicians who only care for votes and opinions, and simply want to gain more power and prestige, then why would they do this? See, the problem is, their attempts to take away rights and privacy based on terrorism isn't working very well. (See: this and this) So they have pulled out the big guns. Because no one in their right mind is going to come up against Bush and Gang now and come away smelling like a rose. This is a very underhanded card for him to play. No longer is it "you are in danger from terrorists!" now it's "your children are endanger from perverts!" Every once in awhile, politicians bring Child Porn Law, and USC 2257 back into the public eye in order to "look busy" in the fight against indecency. They meddle around, come up with some decidely unhelpful renditions, encroach closer on everyday American's privacy, then go back to their old ways. The fact that it is still an issue should speak to us and say that we are looking at this all wrong, and as we can observe, more and more legislation doesn't really help anything. Look at the war on drugs, how long has that been running? The more we legislate it, the more people use it, dangerously! The more deaths, and as we have seen, the younger the participants. And all this aside, shame on Google for not being able to say outright, "sorry guys, we don't keep long term records of user searches, and we certainly don't connect them to any personal information, because that would be unscrupulous." |

January 19, 2005 AMSTERDAM - Global shipments of personal
computers rose 15.3 percent in 2005 with Dell extending its lead
over Hewlett-Packard and Europe overtaking the United States as the
largest market, a survey showed on Thursday.
Comment:
"In the United States, fourth-quarter results confirmed that the U.S. professional market replacement cycle has peaked. "Both small and midsize business and enterprise markets showed softness in demand," Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa said."Is the problem the peak of the replacement cycle, or economic weakness? Small and midsize businesses are the first to be hurt by a slowing economy. |

By Lester Haines Published Thursday 19th January 2006 12:01 GMT UK TV viewers will not get to see an episode of South Park which shows Nicole Kidman and fellow Scientologist John Travolta attempting to coax a fictional Tom Cruise character out of a closet, with Kidman saying: "Don't you think this has gone on long enough? It's time for you to come out of the closet. You're not fooling anyone." Naturally, the robustly heterosexual Top Gun star took exception to this when Trapped in the Closet aired in the US. The episode also showed Stan - believed by the Cruise character to be the reincarnation of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard - having a pop at Cruise's acting abilities, and Cruise reportedly waved the legal big stick at Paramount and threatened to sue if the offending programme was ever shown again. An insider said: "Tom is famously very litigious and will go to great lengths to protect his reputation. Tom was said not to like the episode and Paramount just didn't dare risk showing it again. It's a shame that UK audiences will never see it because it's very funny." Comment: And I used to
like Tom Cruise, now, kinda makes you feel like he deserves to get
ripped on.
