Kenneth Trentadue was no angel.

In the 1980s, he did time for robbing banks. But in a strange twist, the circumstances behind his violent death 10 years ago in prison are playing out in federal court in a case that hints at a wider conspiracy in the Oklahoma City bombing.

Recently released documents unearthed because of a lawsuit against the FBI suggest that the long-standing allegations may not be so far-fetched.

The lawsuit, brought by Trentadue’s brother, Jesse, has convinced a federal judge in Salt Lake City to order the FBI to produce hundreds of sealed documents in recent months, and even members of Congress are backing him in his fight for additional information.

LAST WEEK, at the annual meeting of the American Economic Assn., we presented a new estimate for the likely cost of the war in Iraq. We suggested that the final bill will be much higher than previously reckoned — between $1 trillion and $2 trillion, depending primarily on how much longer our troops stay. Putting that into perspective, the highest-grossing movie of all time, "Titanic," earned $1.8 billion worldwide — about half the cost the U.S. incurs in Iraq every week.

For some reason Jeff Rense's website believes I have decided to stop writing, as the headline on his homepage and this page indicate. In fact, what I said was I "decided to stop posting on the Another Day in the Empire blog" and did not say I would quit writing.

Rense's headline makes the situation worse, as it appears the people who are attacking me through slander, threats, and a variation of the classic "Joe Job" spam technique (using my name to post inflammatory remarks and articles and, more disturbing, using my wife's name) have actually convinced me to run for the hills.

I am not running for the hills.

A mechanic standing near a Boeing 737 at El Paso International Airport in Texas was sucked into one of the engines and killed Monday, officials said.

Continental Airlines Flight 1515 was preparing to take off for Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston when "a maintenance-related engine run-up of the right-hand engine" was carried out, said Roland Herwig, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's southwest region in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

As any reader of the local press--or viewer of Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update--already knows, there's a new face in the Minnesota governor's race as of last Friday. Jonathon Sharkey of Princeton has entered the fray as the standard-bearer of the fledgling Vampyres, Witches, and Pagans (VWP) Party. In addition to heading the VWP and serving as co-owner of two witches' covens, Sharkey is (according to his website) a military vet and former professional boxer and wrestler who went over to the Dark Side once and for all in 2001, following a bad breakup. Yesterday morning we caught up with Minnesota's latest third-party candidate by phone at his office in Princeton.
