Yesterday, we posted the following comment in reponse to an article about the use and condonement of torture by the US government:

"That the majority of Americans are not so appalled by this spectacle that they immediately take to the streets, en masse, to demand a dissolution of the present government, and restoration of the Constitution with the Bill of Rights as an integral, irrevocable part of same, stands as testimony to the fact that they are either psychologically complicit, or complete cowards. Denial is no longer possible."
Two members of our forum responded to this comment with insights into the "lost and confused" state of mind of at least a percentage of U.S. citizens who are awake to the true state of their country and offer some ideas as to what can be done to face up to a psychopathic government and business world that together masquerade as the "greatest Democracy on earth". We include the exchange below.

"I thought a long time about how to respond to this. On a very simple level, this comment of yours is correct, of course. Unfortunately, the day to day situation here in the States is far from simple. It is never a simple situation, as you're learning through the study of Ponerology.

The American populace has been under the influence of psychopaths for quite some time now and that unavoidably leads to a mental illness among the masses. Perhaps the people most likely to take to the streets are the ones most vulnerable to this mental illness; when faced with a legislature that daily passes laws that restrict their freedoms, diminish their wealth and destroy their environment, not to mention skyrocketing unemployment, the plunging value of the dollar, a complicit media broadcasting and printing nothing but lies, perhaps these people are so drained by the insanity of the situation that they are left catatonic to some degree; helpless against the monster their country has become.

With each disclosure of crimes, the propoganda here in the States rachets up a notch and we see and hear more of their lies, more of their faces, more of their voices, more of their assurances that nothing we are hearing is true - to the exclusion of all else. For a populace raised and programmed for generations to listen to authority and to believe their leaders, this is devestating to any semblance of mental hygeine.

I think, perhaps, you may be underestimating the psychological damage already done to the American populace. When a society is faced with an enemy within who daily forces lies down their throat and into their mind, this society truly does feel something precious leaking away from inside themselves. Yes, there is a small percentage (perhaps 6%?) who love it; who lie and defend and make their money and sit in their racist, deviant worlds waiting with baited breath for the first nuke to fall. There are those who refuse to see the truth, to accept it, and they will suffer dearly once they can hide from it no more. For some others, I just sense a complete sense of loss and confusion at to what in the world can be done.

With a complicit House, Congress and Judiciary no amount of screaming in the streets will change things here. I realize how pessimistic that is, but I'm telling you, from inside the walls of this decaying monster, this is what I see. It has taken generations for things to degenerate to the point they are and, perhaps, it is well-deserved by a society of people who have always tended to serve themselves first and well; who have always advanced on the bodies and work of those less fortunate or, perhaps, not as strong.

I have no answers, only observations that the people here are ill and getting worse, and that the government here will destroy as many of them, and as many others, as possible before it is over."
A second forum member responded as follows:
[...] 'I just sense a complete sense of loss and confusion as to what in the world can be done. With a complicit House, Congress and Judiciary no amount of screaming in the streets will change things here.' [...]

"Agreed. That sentence may be the most succinct, best summary I've yet encountered describing the tragic reality of the average American citizen's plight. Where I live, that IS the mood "on the street."To restate the extent of American political corruption:

There are only three members of the entire "elected" U.S. government, in every office, every branch, every courtroom, who are not affiliated with either of the two coroporate and/or Zionist-owned and controlled dominant political parties.

They are:

1) Senator RUSSELL FEINGOLD, of Wisconsin - the sole member of the government to have never had any political party affiliations.

2) Senator JAMES JEFFORDS, of Vermont, a former Republican, until 2001.

3) Congressman BERNIE SANDERS of Vermont, who began as a Republican but became independent from party affiliations before first being elected to the House of Representatives some 12 years ago.

What, despite the willingness of all 3 of these men to help, can they possibly do alone? To accent the corporate media and press dominance, very seldom are their names even heard. I have written to each of them personally, and even though I am not a voting consitutent to any of them, all three have replied to my communications. That is rare. All three have politely expressed their own feelings of frustration and helplessness in the face of the current government...at least they were honest about it. So, out of some 545 members of the House and Senate, only 3 are not outright owned by the Powers That Be.

I would add to those observations already made another thoroughly disheartening situation that is sharply discouraging to the American public: there is nearly a complete lack of meaningful, results-oriented, sustained international outrage.

We hear no loud, official, international opposition to the American regime, but an awful lot of collusive bending of rules and enabling is done every day by the European and Asian nations especially. Where are the European and Asian demands for major investigations? Where are the criminal charges of fraud, theft, embezzlement, aggressive war, mass murder, elections fraud, U.N. charter violations.? Where is there even a strong and consistently raised voice of official protest, from one single European nation or another English speaking country? We can't hear you!! And that hurts. It leaves us feeling abandoned, utterly alone in opposing the Monsters who are actively devouring this world.

Where is the united international support for and investigation of the plight of the CIA abductees? Where are the charges filed at/by the ICC for the crimes committed against the rest of the world by the individual members of the totalitarian regime running this country? Since the designated period of their immunity from ICC prosecutions ended, not one word has been said on the subject. The silence from all major foreign sources, governments, NGOs, criminal and civil courts, religious and other institutions, authorities and international media is huge and overwhelming.

But, of course, that too is part of the plans of the Powers That Be, n'est ce pas?

In Truth, there is no major or long established government, business, religion, industry or other large scale enterprise on this Earth that is not in collusion with the Enemy of all humanity. It is not only American politics, American politicians, American corporations, industries, banks, religions, etc., who have brought this about. They are just the most visible culprits, for now, and probably not the biggest "rats" in the bunch. Ever heard of the Bilderbergers, folks, and the Illuminati?

The truth is:
1) the murderous totalitarian agenda is now marching against all of the human race, seeking to make total war against, and to totally enslave, all of humankind.
2) It is a human problem, demanding a human community taking up a global, human initiative to oppose it for the sake of simple, global, human survival.

The best method I can think of, and the only one never before tried, is a global, non-violent human strike and passive resistance against all of their enterprises: the corporations, banks, stores, industries, churches, religions, etc. All those organisations and entities not actively opposed to the American, British, Australian, European, Israeli, Russian, Indian, Chinese and other major economic and political regimes, and those regimes themselves, must be boycotted.

We can only say "no" to them, and we must. Say "No!" to buying from them, "No!" to paying taxes or fees or tarriffs to them, "No!" to credit card, mortgage, automobile, insurance or other payments, "No!" to compliance with their requirements for our work, "No!" to our attendance of their functions or schools, "No!" to watching or listening to any kind or form of their corporate broadcasts, "No!" to reading their mainstream, corporate press, magazines, online or other publications, and so on. A strict, human, global policy of non-participation in any thing or activity that supports them in the slightest is our only and best weapon.

They want 94% of us dead and gone anyway, and they will stop at nothing to achieve that, so why not begin our strike now, individually, and persistently spread the word to all we meet, and never stop, doing so? Think of all we could give and do for and with each other, networking, sharing, trying new ideas, new methods, working for and with our own innate abilities, without the onus of having to waste time and energy in dealing with "them".

Without all of us and our works and participation, they are helpless. It is we who have given them their power, and we must stop it, now, or perish.

Perhaps one question we in this "Truth Movement" might seek to ask of ourselves is: where are we engaging in some unthinking collusion not yet identified and rooted out from our own Beings and lives? In other words, as I asked myself: what am i doing in my own day to day life that lends support to the Powers That Be?

Next I asked: what more can I do that I have not yet undertaken to shut the Powers That Be out of my own daily life? I have found and faced a number of my own culpabilities.

My own strike began at 6:00am yesterday morning. The first Truth needing to be accepted was that the only strike I could truly implement, that I could assure would happen, was my own. Disconnecting from their system will not be done in one day, but it is possible. However some significant changes were possible in only one day: cancelling things like my TV connection, magazine and online MSM subscriptions, altering where and how i will now purchase food, CSA - Community Supported Agriculture - basically a "share" purchased as an annual or seasonal "subscription" paid to a local, privately owned farm or store, in my case an organic, family and/or collective-cooperative farm where, should my physical stamina improve, some of the price can be paid in bartered work, such as doing up ads, brochures & business correspondence for them. There is no part of my own life that does not have room for improvement.

Once I looked, there were many ways to take action and numerous alternatives available. The quality and extent of disconnection from the PTB will grow over time, and with the more of us who pursue it, and the more diligently we do so, the faster and better it will grow. None of it will be easy, but all of it will be a direct blow, however small, against the real source of their power, my giving of my own substance and efforts to feed it. Ultimately, that substance and effort, from each and every one of us on this Earth, is the sole source of their power. Most of it they have stolen, without either our knowledge or consent. They promised us fair trade and robbed us all instead.

It is called parallel empowerment, and it starts with finding and using, or initiating and developing new parallel, unconnected local and regional resources and systems to replace the corporate ones. The only limit to how and how well it gets done, is our own creativity and resourcefulness. By going on strike, we can all begin the challenge of a lifetime - or several. We can begin inventing and building a global community, economy and polity all free from the PTB.

Perhaps this will give some ideas and encouragement to others choosing to seek these same answers. It can be done, even if it is not easy. Funny how much better one feels with each successive "peeling" away of another layer of the false notions about the way things "have" to be done. Oh no, they do not have to be done as they are and always have been. That is a big lie.

Tonight, my gratitude for this forum is profound. Where else would anyone bother to THINK about those last comments? Or even to read them. Thank you very, very much."

As the dank grayness of late fall and early winter settled in over the Nation’s Capital, a winter storm over its own raged inside the White House.

George W. Bush’s senior advisors, frantic over what to do about the President’s plummeting approval numbers, argued over conflicting strategies. The President’s attempt to use Veterans Day as a rallying cry for his war in Iraq, fell flat on a skeptical public and attempts to paint Democratic Congressman John Murtha, an honored Vietnam war veteran, as unpatriotic brought disapproval.

In conversations with White House aides, GOP advisors and others close to the Bush administration, all of whom insist on anonymity for fear of retaliation from a President who views such actions as treason, a portrait of a White House torn by turf battles and finger pointing emerges. Yet, amid all this debate, a classic case of “good cop/bad cop” political strategy emerged. ...

The firestorm over Friday’s column quoting President George W. Bush’s obscene outburst over the Constitution continues to grow with our email box overflowing from outraged readers who think the President should be impeached along with pro-Bushites who want my head on a platter.

I’m surprised by the public’s anger over this. When a GOP operative first emailed me about the White House meeting where Bush called the Constitution “just a goddamned piece of paper,” I put it aside as one of many reports I get about the President’s temper tantrums.

Bush lashed out at an aide who dared question him on the USA Patriot Act. That’s typical Bush. We started reporting on the President’s outbursts last year and those tantrums are now widely reported now by the so-called “mainstream media.”

Every time we publish a major story that puts some elected official in a bad light we get a chorus of boos from detractors who claim everything we publish is garbage and/or just a figment of an overactive imagination.

From 1994 until 2001, when Bill Clinton led the follies at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the cackle of disapproval came from hardcore Democrats who couldn’t believe we would dare question the actions of their beloved President.

Since 2001, the rabid right-wing packed the cheap seats and showered us with catcalls because we uncovered the many misdeeds of George W. Bush and the questionable Republican leadership of Congress.

Oh, we still get raspberries from the lefties. They remember what we wrote about Clinton and we still go after Democrats who screw up. To partisans, anyone who doesn’t write from a politically-biased point of view is automatically suspect.

Our latest story on President Bush’s disrespectful comments on the Constitution (“it’s just a goddamned piece of paper”) brought the usual flurry of emails from readers who wanted to let us know that (insert name of web site here) is (pick one) “questioning your integrity/calling you a clown/saying your web site is a joke/etc.”

The reaction to the shooting death of Rigoberto Alpizar provides a sobering glimpse into America's current obsession with keeping ourselves safe from terrorism. Alpizar was shot by federal air marshals after he ran off a plane that was about to depart from Miami to Orlando.

Initially, authorities claimed that Alpizar was yelling that he had a bomb as he ran down the plane's aisle with a backpack strapped across his chest. Yet the Orlando Sentinel interviewed seven passengers who claimed Alpizar wasn't saying anything at all, let alone yelling about a bomb, while no passenger backed the government's story.

Alpizar turns out to have been mentally unstable and altogether harmless. It's of course possible that Alpizar claimed he had a bomb once he was out in the jetway, but it's also possible that the two air marshals who shot him panicked, and concocted the story about a bomb after the fact, to make their tragic mistake of shooting a harmless mentally ill man seem like a justifiable use of lethal force.

Comment: Much more than simply making Americans feel safer while not making them appreciably any safer, the comment by the US citizen that he is "ok" with the message from the Alpizar murder that "if you act in an unsafe manner you may well be shot", shows us that the creeping fascism that has spread across the US in the form of "security" measures since 9/11 has had a worrying psychological effect on the American mind. In our recent Podcasts on Psychopathy, we noted that Psychopaths can "infect" the minds of the non-psychopathically inclined by mere association. In the case of the US, we see that five years of living under the dictates of a government ruled by obvious Psychopaths has begun to make a psychopath of the ordinary citizen.

Someday in the near future, millions of American are going to wake up in the morning only to discover that somebody slipped a whole different country under their beds while they were asleep. At first they’ll be in denial, saying things like “No one could slip a whole different country under my bed without waking me up!” After denial, panic will set in. “Has anybody seen my country? I woke up and it was gone”.

During the panic stage, many will become irrational and start looking for the America they once knew. They’ll search under the bed, in the closet, and way back in the cupboard behind the bread machine and the electric juicer, but they won’t find it there. Some will even run ads in the lost and found section of the local classifieds.

That’s when the cold, harsh reality will set in. The realization that they woke up to find themselves trapped in Bizzaro America, a place where up is down, black is white, bad is good and good is bad. The place where the Clear Skies Act and the Healthy Forest Initiative mean fouled air and fewer trees. A carbon copy of the America they went to sleep in but everything is up side down and backward, and nobody sees a problem with it..

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has a secret database that indicates the U.S. military may be collecting information on Americans who oppose the Iraq war and may be also monitoring peace demonstrations, NBC reported on Tuesday.

The database, obtained by the network, lists 1,500 "suspicious incidents" across the United States over a 10-month period and includes four dozen anti-war meetings or protests, some aimed at military recruiting, NBC's Nightly News said.

The network said the document was the first inside look at how the Pentagon has stepped up intelligence collection in the United States since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

WASHINGTON - A $400 million Pentagon psychological warfare operation includes plans to place pro-American messages in foreign media outlets without disclosing the U.S. government as the source, USAToday reported on Wednesday.

Citing one of the military officials in charge of the program, the newspaper said the media campaign was being designed to counter terrorist ideology and sway foreign audiences to support U.S. policies.

The report said the program, run by psychological warfare experts at the U.S. Special Operations Command, would operate throughout the world, including in allied nations and in countries where the United States is not involved in armed conflict.

The description of the program by Mike Furlong, deputy director of the Joint Psychological Operations Support Element, provides the most detailed look to date at the Pentagon's global campaign, USAToday said.

Comment: Ask yourself this: would the US government spend $400 million on attempts to sway public opinion via the media if public opinion was not "swayable" in this way? The simple fact is that, for decades, public opinion, i.e. what YOU think about the world and everything in it, has had nothing to do with what YOU think and everything to do with what the government WANTS you to think. It kind of makes one feel violated in a very personal way, does it not?

The prime minister has defended the government's decision not to hold a public inquiry into the 7 July London bombings, amid heavy criticism.

Victims' representatives, opposition MPs and Muslim leaders said an inquiry was needed for lessons to be learned.

Ministers have said they will instead publish a definitive account of what happened, in a written narrative.

Tony Blair said: "I do accept that people want to know exactly what happened. We will make sure they do."

The attacks by four suicide bombers on three Tube trains and a bus on 7 July killed 52 people and injured hundreds.

'Real crisis'

Mr Blair said it was already known "essentially" what happened on 7 July and said there would be up to five Commons select committee inquiries.

"If we ended up having a full scale public inquiry... we would end up diverting a massive amount of police and security service time and I don't think it would be sensible," he said.

He added that the written narrative - to be compiled by a senior civil servant - would include all of the evidence the government had.

Comment: We wonder if the official and therefore incomplete report on the London bombings will include the fact that a man on one of the trains where a bomb exploded reported that there was no one standing where the bomb exploded much less anyone with a backpack, and, most importantly, that there was a large hole in the floor of the train where the bomb exploded and that the metal was turned inwards.

Mark Faulk

This is a story about disappearing terrorists, nonexistent bags, and botched investigations, but most of all, this is a story about magic bombs.

It's Crime Scene Investigation 101. It's the basic law of physics. It's so elementary, my dear Watson, that even a dancer who was dazed from the shock of being seated directly over the spot where one of the bombs was planted in the London tube carriage two weeks ago could figure it out.

In a seemingly innocuous article in the British newspaper Cambridge Evening News, 32 year-old dance instructor Bruce Lait, in an interview from his hospital bed, said that "The policeman said 'mind that hole, that's where the bomb was'. The metal was pushed upwards as if the bomb was underneath the train. They seem to think the bomb was left in a bag, but I don't remember anybody being where the bomb was, or any bag."

Read that last part again, very slowly, and let it sink in. "The metal was pushed upwards as if the bomb was underneath the train." "They seem to think the bomb was left in a bag, but I don't remember anybody being where the bomb was, or any bag."

TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad escalated his anti-Israeli rhetoric Wednesday, calling the Holocaust a "myth" used by Europeans to create a Jewish state in the heart of the Islamic world.

His remarks drew swift condemnation from
Israel, Germany, France and the
European Commission. Germany said the remarks would affect upcoming negotiations over
Iran's nuclear program.

Ahmadinejad last week questioned whether the Nazi destruction of 6 million European Jews during World War II occurred and said Israel should be moved to Europe. He also provoked an international outcry in October when he called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

But Wednesday was the first time he publicly denied the Holocaust. Touring southeast Iran, Ahmadinejad said that if Europeans insist the Holocaust happened, then they are responsible and should pay the price.

"Today, they have created a myth in the name of Holocaust and consider it to be above God, religion and the prophets," Ahmadinejad told thousands of people in the southeastern city of Zahedan.

"If you committed this big crime, then why should the oppressed Palestinian nation pay the price?" Ahmadinejad asked rhetorically.

"This is our proposal: if you committed the crime, then give a part of your own land in Europe, the United States, Canada or Alaska to them so that the Jews can establish their country," he said, developing a theme he raised in Saudi Arabia last week.

"Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said: "The repeated outrageous remarks of the Iranian president show clearly the mind-set of the ruling clique in Tehran and indicate clearly the extremist policy goals of the regime.

"The combination of fanatical ideology, a warped sense of reality and nuclear weapons is a combination that no one in the international community can accept," Regev added.
Speaking of "fanatical ideology, a warped sense of reality," and possession of nuclear weapons, consider the following:
Zionists claim that Jews have the right to possess all land between the Nile and the Euphrates because (they say) this land was given to them by some entity they call "YHWH" as claimed in the Old Testament (Genesis 15:18). But this would not be the first time that documents written by humans were used to justify land grabs. (And this "YHWH" appears, from accounts in the Old Testament, to be a particularly repulsive entity, vain, jealous, given to fits of rage and directing his followers to massacre civilian populations — an entity who, if he existed, would be quite unworthy of the devotion of anyone with a sense of justice and morality.)

Zionists are not content with having acquired a state of their own in Palestine, they also want this state to be for-Jews-only, thus the desire and intention to expel from Israeli-controlled territory all the indigenous inhabitants (a practice sometimes known as ethnic cleansing, a concept derived from the Nazi practice of "cleansing" areas of all Jews so that those areas are then Judenrein). "If I became a prime minister, I would wipe out all Arabs, kill every newly-born Palestinian baby and knife the abdomen of every woman who is pregnant from an Arab. Those dogs should not be close to the chosen people of god" Ariel Sharon

"Genociding the Arabs and killing them are the only weapon in dealing with them. There will not be peace between us and the Arabs as our future is built only by wiping them out. Keeping one Arab alive in the region is a dagger in the back of Israel" Ariel Sharon

BRITAIN is set for a U-turn on its commitment to send thousands of troops to fight in Afghanistan next year, with some in the army now questioning whether the mission should be abandoned altogether.

Senior officers are in despair over the chaos surrounding the mission. Opium production in Afghanistan has returned to pre-invasion levels, the police force is in disarray and there is an active and growing insurgency.

It took months of wrangling to persuade other NATO members to agree to supply troops. But one senior officer described the efforts of coalition partners as "shambolic", accusing the Dutch government of demanding United States military protection for its troops before agreeing to send them.

Another officer accused the Germans of a complete failure in their mission to rebuild the country's police force. He said German forces had trained little more than 200 officers in four years, and when the new police force was deployed in Kabul, they had promptly disappeared. "In many ways, Afghanistan is in a worse position now, four years on from the war there, than Iraq is," he said.

"It is going to take years to resolve it and the insurgency is getting worse.

Comment: Afghanistan was the first to be "liberated" by Bush's bombing crusaders, yet it is now said that it is in a worse state than beleaguered Iraq. Women's rights are still non-existent and Opium production, which had been virtually banned under the Taliban, is now back up to full strength. Coincidence?

by Michel Chossudovsky
Centre for Research on Globalisation
In 2000, the Taliban government under advice from the United Nations Drug Control Program (UNDCP) imposed a total ban on opium production. Prior to the ban, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Afghanistan produced more than 70% of the world's opium in 2000, and about 80% of opiate products (meaning heroin) destined to the European market.

The annual proceeds of the Afghan Golden Crescent drug trade (between 100 and 200 billion dollars) represented approximately one third of the worldwide annual turnover of narcotics, estimated by the United Nations to be of the order of $500 billion.

In many regards, the trade in narcotics as well as the drug routes to the European and North American markets are considered to be "strategic". There are powerful financial interests behind the drug trade, which have a pervasive influence, behind the scenes, on the conduct of US foreign policy.

These multibillion dollar revenues of narcotics were deposited in the Western banking system. Most of the large international banks -together with their affiliates in the offshore banking havens-laundered large amounts of narco-dollars. In other words, Afghanistan, the poorest country on earth, was the source of tremendous financial wealth derived from the drug trade to financial institutions, business syndicates and organised crime. Part of the drug related revenues accrue to the CIA, which continues to protect both the Asian and Latin American drug trade. Visibly, only a very small percentage of these revenues stays in Afghanistan. .

Following the year 2000 ban on poppy production imposed by the Taliban government, opium production collapsed by more than 90 percent, leading to a dwindling drug trade and substantial losses to the inters underlying this multibillion dollar trade including Western financial institutions.3 The Northern Alliance became the main political force involved in protecting the production and marketing of raw opium.

The Drug Trade Restored by the US Puppet Regime

While oil and oil pipelines out of the Caspian sea basin were undoubtedly a factor, the bombing of Afghanistan also served to restore the multibillion drug trade, which is protected by the CIA.

Immediately following the installation of the US puppet government under Prime Minister Hamid Kharzai, opium production soared, regaining its historic levels. According to the UNDCP, opium cultivation increased by 657 % in 2002 (in relation to its 2001 level). In 2001, opium cultivation had fallen to an estimated 7606ha.(See table below). It is currently estimated by the UNDCP to be of the order of 45 000 -65 000ha.

In the immediate wake of September 11, the price of opium in Afghanistan increased three-fold. By early 2002, the price (dollar/kg) was almost ten times higher than in the year 2000.

In the end, we can only assume the decision wasn't so "agonizing" after all. Last night Stan Tookie Williams was legally lynched by the state of California, at the behest of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who denied Williams' appeal for clemency.

The Governor deemed that a man who had been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times and brokered gang truces from Newark to South Central was not worthy to walk and breathe among us. Stan's case for clemency was so compelling it was articulated by people from Desmond Tutu to Snoop Dogg, and yet, watching Schwarzenegger in action has been to observe the nexus of cold-hearted political calculation and cowardice.

As Western subsidies distort Africa's markets, Kate Eshelby in Burkina Faso reports on the victims

Seydou, dressed in a ripped T-shirt that hangs off his shoulders, looks blank when questioned about the effects of United States subsidies on his only source of income, cotton farming.

"I don't know about cotton in the US but I know cotton prices have fallen here in Burkina Faso," he says solemnly. The farmers working in the cotton fields of Burkina Faso, often in remote locations, have little knowledge of the intricacies of world markets. What they do know is the price they receive for their cotton harvests, essential for basic necessities such as medicines and school fees, is dropping fast.

The end of cotton farming in Burkina Faso and other cotton-producing west African countries is rapidly approaching. World cotton prices have dropped to a historic low because of the EU and US trade subsidies which have artificially distorted world markets.

Comment: Ever wondered why, year after year, the alleged attempts to alleviate third world hunger fail to achieve their goal? The answer is simple: Western governments don't want to. Sure they give "millions" in aid to third world countries, but they know that by way of the massively biased economic systems they and their forebears put in place on this planet, they will receive back 10 times what they give, leaving the populations of third world countries in persistent poverty. In any case, many of the third world government leaders find themselves in power only because Western government leaders desired it. The Western "aid" that is given to third world countries is little more than personal bribes to their political leaders to allow Western exploitation to continue.

In short, we will NEVER see an end to third world debt or hunger until we get rid of the Psychopaths in power. You can take THAT to the bank.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Mexico's volcano rabbit and monkey-faced bats in Fiji are among hundreds of species facing imminent extinction but protecting the remaining scraps of their habitat could save them, according to a new study.

Comment: When you hear that hundreds of species are facing extinction, how do you react? Does it give rise to an emotional reaction of any kind?

Do you care?

There are those who see such extinctions as "part of nature", "the way things have always been", and who don't give it another thought. They're probably the ones in control in many countries and of many corporations.

If you care, try and understand what about it affects you. Why would you care about species you may never have heard about, may never have seen in a zoo or in a picture book?

Are you afraid because of what it means for the planet? Is your reaction essentially fear-based?

Or do you react because you love nature? Because you hate the way mankind is destroying his habitat and innocent creatures?

But is this reaction really evidence of caring? Can true caring be based upon hatred or anger? Anger can be a powerful fuel, but the fuel must be transformed and rid of its negative colouring. Anger offers the possibility of better understanding yourself by locating the origin of the anger, however, as long as one is acting "in anger", one remains prisoner of one's chemicals.

And shouldn't true caring be more than a chemical reaction?

Isn't true caring related to conscience?

We raise the issue of conscience because it is intimately tied up with the question of psychopathy. We are spending a lot of time referring to psychopathy and ponerology because we think these questions are important. Some readers have written us to suggest that we are becoming fixated on the topic. We think that these readers might benefit from a reading of The Mask of Sanity, available at qfgpublishing as a pdf download, Lobaczewski's Political Ponerology, excerpts of which can be found at this article by Laura, and The Sociopath Next Door, the book we discussed in last weekend's podcast.

Discussion of psychopathy is important for many reasons. One reason, closely tied to the above article as we said, is that of conscience.

A psychopath has no conscience.

Gurdjieff says that the rest of us don't have a conscience either, but that through work, we can connect with it.

Here is a long quote from In Search of the Miraculous on the question of conscience.
"'Buffers' are created slowly and gradually. Very many 'buffers' are created artificially through 'education.' Others are created under the hypnotic influence of all surrounding life. A man is surrounded by people who live, speak, think, and feel by means of 'buffers.' Imitating them in their opinions, actions, and words, a man involuntarily creates similar 'buffers' in himself. 'Buffers' make a man's life more easy. It is very hard to live without 'buffers.' But they keep man from the possibility of inner development because 'buffers' are made to lessen shocks and it is only shocks that can lead a man out of the state in which he lives, that is, waken him. 'Buffers' lull a man to sleep, give him the agreeable and peaceful sensation that all will be well, that no contradictions exist and that he can sleep in peace. 'Buffers' are appliances by means of -which a man can always be in the right. 'Buffers' help a man not to feel his conscience.

" 'Conscience' is again a term that needs explanation.

"In ordinary life the concept 'conscience' is taken too simply. As if we had a conscience. Actually the concept 'conscience' in the sphere of the emotions is equivalent to the concept 'consciousness' in the sphere of the intellect. And as we have no consciousness we have no conscience.

"Consciousness is a state in which a man knows all at once everything that he in general knows and in which he can see how little he does know and how many contradictions there are in what he knows.

"Conscience is a state in which a man feels all at once everything that he in general feels, or can feel. And as everyone has within him thousands of contradictory feelings which vary from a deeply hidden realization of his own nothingness and fears of all kinds to the most stupid kind of self-conceit, self-confidence, self-satisfaction, and self-praise, to feel all this together would not only be painful but literally unbearable.

"If a man whose entire inner world is composed of contradictions were suddenly to feel all these contradictions simultaneously within himself, if he were to feel all at once that he loves everything he hates and hates everything he loves; that he lies when he tells the truth and that he tells the truth when he lies; and if he could feel the shame and horror of it all, this would be the state which is called 'conscience. A man cannot live in this state; he must either destroy contradictions or destroy conscience. He cannot destroy conscience, but if he cannot destroy it he can put it to sleep, that is, he can separate by impenetrable barriers one feeling of self from another, never see them together, never feel their incompatibility, the absurdity of one existing alongside another.

"But fortunately for man, that is, for his peace and for his sleep, this state of conscience is very rare. From early childhood 'buffers' begin to grow and strengthen in him, taking from him the possibility of seeing his inner contradictions and therefore, for him, there is no danger whatever of a sudden awakening. Awakening is possible only for those who seek it and want it, for those who are ready to struggle with themselves and work on themselves for a very long time and very persistently in order to attain it. For this it is necessary to destroy 'buffers,' that is, to go out to meet all those inner sufferings which are connected with the sensations of contradictions. Moreover the destruction of 'buffers' in itself requires very long work and a man must agree to this work realizing that the result of his work will be every possible discomfort and suffering from the awakening of his conscience.

"But conscience is the fire which alone can fuse all the powders in the glass retort which was mentioned before and create the unity which a man lacks in that state in which he begins to study himself.

"The concept 'conscience' has nothing in common with the concept 'morality.'

"Conscience is a general and a permanent phenomenon. Conscience is the same for all men and conscience is possible only in the absence of 'buffers.' From the point of view of understanding the different categories of man we may say that there exists the conscience of a man in whom there are no contradictions. This conscience is not suffering; on the contrary it is joy of a totally new character which we are unable to understand. But even a momentary awakening of conscience in a man who has thousands of different I's is bound to involve suffering. And if these moments of conscience become longer and if a man does not fear them but on the contrary co operates with them and tries to keep and prolong them, an element of very subtle joy, a foretaste of the future 'clear consciousness' will gradually enter into these moments.

"There is nothing general in the concept of 'morality.' Morality consists of buffers. There is no general morality. What is moral in China is immoral in Europe and what is moral in Europe is immoral in China. What is moral in Petersburg is immoral in the Caucasus. And what is moral in the Caucasus is immoral in Petersburg. What is moral in one class of society is immoral in another and vice versa. Morality is always and everywhere an artificial phenomenon. It consists of various 'taboos,' that is, restrictions, and various demands, sometimes sensible in their basis and sometimes having lost all meaning or never even having had any meaning, and having been created on a false basis, on a soil of superstition and false fears.

"Morality consists of 'buffers.' And since 'buffers' are of various kinds, and as the conditions of life in different countries and in different ages or among different classes of society vary considerably, so the morality created by them is also very dissimilar and contradictory. A morality common to all does not exist. It is even impossible to say that there exists any general idea of morality, for instance, in Europe. It is said sometimes that the general morality for Europe is 'Christian morality.' But first of all the idea of 'Christian morality' itself admits of very many different interpretations and many different crimes have been justified by 'Christian morality.' And in the second place modern Europe has very little in common with 'Christian morality,' no matter how we understand this morality.

"In any case, if 'Christian morality' brought Europe to the war which is now going on, then it would be as well to be as far as possible from such morality,"

"Many people say that they do not understand the moral side of your teaching," said one of us. "And others say that your teaching has no morality at all."

"Of course not," said G. "People are very fond of talking about morality. But morality is merely self-suggestion. What is necessary is conscience. We do not teach morality. We teach how to find conscience. People are not pleased when we say this. They say that we have no love. Simply because we do not encourage weakness and hypocrisy but, on the contrary, take off all masks. He who desires the truth will not speak of love or of Christianity because he knows how far he is from these. Christian teaching is for Christians. And Christians are those who live, that is, who do everything, according to Christ's precepts. Can they who talk of love and morality live according to Christ's precepts? Of course they cannot; but there will always be talk of this kind, there will always be people to whom words are more precious than anything else. But this is a true sign! He who speaks like this is an empty man; it is not worth while wasting time on him.

"Morality and conscience are quite different things. One conscience can never contradict another conscience. One morality can always very easily contradict and completely deny another. A man with 'buffers' may be very moral. And 'buffers' can be very different, that is, two very moral men may consider each other very immoral. As a rule it is almost inevitably so. The more 'moral' a man is, the more 'immoral' does he think other moral people.

"The idea of morality is connected with the idea of good and evil conduct. But the idea of good and evil is always different for different people, always subjective in man number one, number two, and number three, and is connected only with a given moment or a given situation. A subjective man can have no general concept of good and evil. For a subjective man evil is everything that is opposed to his desires or interests or to his conception of good.

"One may say that evil does not exist for subjective man at all, that there exist only different conceptions of good. Nobody ever does anything deliberately in the interests of evil, for the sake of evil. Everybody acts in the interests of good, as he understands it. But everybody understands it in a different way. Consequently men drown, slay, and kill one another in the interests of good. The reason is again just the same, men's ignorance and the deep sleep in which they live.

"This is so obvious that it even seems strange that people have never thought of it before. However, the fact remains that they fail to understand this and everyone considers his good as the only good and all the rest as evil. It is naive and useless to hope that men will ever understand this and that they will evolve a general and identical idea of good."
We ask, can we better understand conscience by studying those beings who have none? And if we need to do the work of which Gurdjieff speaks in order to have a real conscience, then what distinguishes us right here, right now, from the psychopath?

These are not idle questions; they are perhaps the most important questions that we can ask ourselves.

A large object has been found beyond Pluto travelling in an orbit tilted by 47 degrees to most other bodies in the solar system. Astronomers are at a loss to explain why the object's orbit is so off-kilter while being almost circular.

Researchers led by Lynne Allen at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, first spotted the object in observations made with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in December 2004. Since October 2005, they have made follow-up observations that have revealed the object's perplexing path.

Tentatively named 2004 XR190, the object appears to have a diameter of between 500 and 1000 kilometres, making it somewhere between a fifth and nearly half as wide as Pluto. It lies in a vast ring of icy bodies beyond Neptune called the Kuiper Belt, most of which orbit in nearly the same plane as Earth.

But at 47 degrees, 2004 XR190's orbit is one of the most tilted, or inclined, Kuiper Belt Objects known. That suggests it was flung out of the solar system's main disc after a close encounter with another object - such as Neptune or perhaps a star that passed by the Sun billions of years ago. [...]

Hal Levison, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, US, says he and others have produced objects like Buffy using models of such special resonances. "However, I do have some problems with the idea," he admits.

Hidden objects

He points out that this object was found when it happened to be passing through the plane of the solar system - where it spends just 2% of its orbit. That suggests many more such objects remain undiscovered, tilted at orbits where most surveys do not search for them. "I just don't think these mechanisms can deliver that much stuff," Levison told New Scientist.

He ventures another possible explanation - that the Sun had a twin and that both stars followed circular orbits around each other. "That could excite inclinations without exciting the eccentricities," he says. "However, this idea creates more problems than it solves, by far."

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Those stain-resistant khakis you just picked up at the mall, the tennis ball that holds its bounce longer and sunscreen that's clear instead of white have something in common — nanotechnology.

Scientists manipulating matter at the molecular level have improved on hundreds of everyday products in recent years and are promising dramatic breakthroughs in medicine and other industries as billions of dollars a year are pumped into the nascent sector.

But relatively little is known about the potential health and environmental effects of the tiny particles — just atoms wide and small enough to easily penetrate cells in lungs, brains and other organs.

LESTERVILLE, Mo. - The Upper Taum Sauk Lake Dam failed this morning, causing large amounts of water to move rapidly downstream and creating what officials called a "very dangerous situation."

The break occurred at 6:24 a.m. at the dam in Reynolds County, about 120 miles southwest of St. Louis. A family of five was rescued, and one person was missing, Reynolds County Sheriff's dispatcher Ginger Bell said. But she said authorities have not yet been able to get to nearby Johnson Shut-Ins State Park.

A National Weather Service bulletin warned that the water would move rapidly downstream along the Black River, creating a "dangerous and life-threatening situation." Residents of Lesterville and elsewhere downstream from the dam were urged to move quickly to higher ground.

The break occurred after heavy rains overnight.

The Weather Service said small creeks and streams, country roads and farmland will be flooded.

Reynolds County has a population of about 6,700 and sits in the northwest portion of the Ozark Foothills Region.

Comment: This is a dam that was recently cited as follows: International Group Declares AmerenUE's Taum Sauk Plant an Engineering "Milestone" That was in September of 2005. So, why is this dam failing?

The article suggests that it is due to heavy rainfall. However, another article, found in the UK Guardian gives the lie to that idea. Person Missing After Missouri Dam Fails This article tells us: "National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Pedigo said rain was not a factor in the break. The region received only about one-tenth of an inch of rain overnight, he said."
Well, isn't that curious? Reminds us that the C's once gave a strange prediction: "Seattle buried; Japan buckles; Missouri shakes; California crumbles; Arizona burns." Interesting to speculate, eh?

KINGFISHER -- Mysterious unrefined natural gas leaks erupting in rural Kingfisher County in recent days continue to have officials puzzled as to their cause.

"We originally thought a pipeline had exploded," said Matt Skinner, Oklahoma Corporation Commission public information manager. "We had the pressure to zero pressure, and the leaks seemed to get bigger. So that's not it."

Skinner had said at a press conference Monday geologists and hydrologists are beginning to study underground maps of the area to find an explanation.

"We've ruled out the probables, and now we're into the unprobables," he said. "We've never seen one like this before, one that covers such a large area. It's another animal."

Skinner said the leak was unusual because of its size and that it was "moving with no explanation."
