Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter, the sometimes-maverick Republican who has been a thorn in more than one GOP President’s side, brought out the word that’s been whispered in the Congressional cloakrooms and behind closed doors by other members of his party for several weeks now.

Impeachment.

The mad cowboys are on the loose. Pack only what you can carry. Liberate the animals. Leave the rest behind. The looters are hot on the trail. Only ruin stands in their wake. Not even women and children are safe. Especially not them. Run for the hills and don't look back. Don't ever look back.

So the story goes, anyway.

Comment: "How wicked is Barbara Bush? Well, she refused to attend her own mother's funeral. And the day after her five-year old daughter Robin died of leukemia Barbara Bush was in a jolly enough mood to spend the afternoon on the golf course. ...

Her loathsome demeanor hasn't lightened much over the years. Refresh you memory with this quote on Good Morning America, dismissing the escalating body count of American soldiers in Iraq. "Why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many," the Presidential Mother snapped. "It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

Notice also that Barbara Bush said about the Katrina refugees "What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas," she was quoted as saying in an interview on National Public Radio. "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them." In other words: The Katrina refugees didn't have it so bad because they were poor to begin with.

In our first article on psychopathy, we noted: "[Psychopaths] are the type of person who can claim that they are devastated by grief who then attend a party "to forget." The problem is: they really DO forget." We see this striking characteristic displayed repeatedly in Barbara Bush. The question is, IS George W. Bush a psychopath? One of our readers doesn't think so. He writes:

G.W. Bush is, to a high degree of probability, the only one born to Mama & Daddy Bush who was NOT entirely a genetic, natural psychopath. You'll never see good old Jeb, or Neil, or Babbs, or Daddy Bush, etc., getting hit with congestive dementia. The day I saw the article from doctors diagnosing W's pre-senile/congestive dementia, my saddest assessments of him were confirmed. They had to psychologically torture him into full blown psychopathy to get him ready for his leading role.

He had to become as they are simply in order to survive his childhood with them. But it is because he was NOT like unto themselves that they tormented him as a small child, calling him Shrub because he was "too soft" "too sissy" and not otherwise good enough to be a "real Bush." They made fun of him when he initially refused to blow up frogs with his brothers and the older cousin, and uncle, who are now running the infamous Riggs Bank. The older cousin first "turned the Bush boys on" to the froggies & firecrackers game. G.W.B. cried and was psychologically and emotionally crucified for it in his very first incident of frog fragging, but never again. (Taken partly from an unofficial biography of G.W. Bush, "Shrub", and partly from memoirs of former governor Anne Richards of Texas.)

His being treated as the "defective" child is part of how he became addicted to alcohol and drugs, etc., and also why he is now compelled, for reasons he doesn't begin to fathom, to do the opposite of everything his Daddy, Clinton, et al did. He started out with at least the characteropathic degrees of conscience and empathy, and set about burning those things out of himself from then on. He had indeed become fully sociopathic, and most probably as close to 100% psychopathic as one can get without the right genetic mutation, long before the world ever heard of him. Now, he's paying the price with "a congestive dementia formerly seen only in old prostitutes." 'Nuff. 'Bye George.

Dictatorships seldom appear full-fledged but emerge piecemeal. When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon with one Roman legion he broke the tradition that protected the civilian government from victorious generals and launched the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Fearing that Caesar would become a king, the Senate assassinated him. From the civil wars that followed, Caesar’s grandnephew, Octavian, emerged as the first Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus.

Two thousand years later in Germany, Adolf Hitler’s rise to dictator from his appointment as chancellor was rapid. Hitler used the Reichstag fire to create an atmosphere of crisis. Both the judicial and legislative branches of government collapsed, and Hitler’s decrees became law. The Decree for the Protection of People and State (Feb. 28, 1933) suspended guarantees of personal liberty and permitted arrest and incarceration without trial. The Enabling Act (March 23, 1933) transferred legislative power to Hitler, permitting him to decree laws, laws moreover that "may deviate from the Constitution."

Let's say you are a campaign manager whose candidate is running for a seat in the General Assembly. Your guy is in a tight race, and he may not win merely by running an honest campaign on the issues. Fortunately, you don't care about honesty. You are completely unscrupulous and will resort to anything to give your man an edge. You've already tried negative campaigning, distortions, and promising the impossible. It's time for dirty tricks. What are your options?

Here are three: (1) You can inflate the number of votes for your guy through vote fraud; (2) you can decrease the number of votes for the other guy by voter intimidation; and (3) if neither works, you can try to change the actual vote count by manipulating voting machines.

-- The answer to this question may partially rest in Navy records detailing the events that took place on the USS Forrestal in "Yankee Station" in the Gulf of Tonkin at the end of July 1967. The neo-cons, who have had five years to examine every file within the Department of Defense, have likely accessed documents that could prove embarrassing to McCain, who was on board the USS Forrestal on July 29, 1967, and whose A-4 Skyhawk was struck by an air-to-ground Zuni missile that had misfired from an F-4 Phantom.

Nothing is more stultifying than one-party rule. It’s a simple rule of perception that unchanging sameness—they always win, no matter what—dulls the senses. My feeling is that right now the American people are taking a little breather. They got through the war on Christmas and that’s enough for now. The Dow Jones hit 1100 for the first time since 9/11. People are drinking more, smoking more, sleeping. Burrowing into their families. Going to see Brokeback Mountain (I highly recommend it). Working. Above all, they are ignoring. They are tuning out the political process, because it is nothing but nonsense and stuff they can’t do anything about.

There are many troubling facts about the Iraq war, the worst being that it was unnecessary and sold to the American people through lies and deception – an unforgivable breech of faith by the president of the United States with the American people. Also troubling is that the reasons for the war are still unclear. Historians will struggle with this for years, probably inconclusively. But if there’s a pathway into Bush’s small and troubled brain that might explain his obsession with Iraq and his subsequent invasion, I’m convinced it lies in an understanding of the relationship of the younger Bush with his father, who also faced down Saddam Hussein, although under very different circumstances.
