Picture of the Day

Israeli destruction of a Palestinian home

Tomorrow millions of Americans will celebrate their country.

We wonder why. Is it simply a question of social conditioning, that is, brainwashing? Where does ignorance and refusal to look reality in the face come in? From whence is born this complete disregard for people in the rest of the world who suffer because of America's "greatness", not to mention the illusion in which they live that tells them how well off they are in a country with outrageous poverty and a growing divide between rich and poor?

Another of life's mysteries is the belief that Israel is a democracy.

The following is a short bit of an interview with Michael Moore discussing his movie Farenheit 911:

Truth Teller or Story Stretcher?

by Patrick Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, June 22, 2004

Q: You make the point that the Bush administration has a special relationship with the Saudis. How is that any different from the special relationship many Washington leaders have with the state of Israel?

Moore: One big difference is that Israel is a democracy and Saudi Arabia is a brutal dictatorship. They celebrated New Year's Day a few years ago by chopping people's heads off. Maybe I missed that when it happened in Israel. Anyway, the support Bush and the Republicans feign for Israel is because Israel is near our oil. If the oil wasn't there, I bet those same Republicans wouldn't [care] about Israel."

In the US, people are killed so cleanly by the State: lethal injection while strapped to a table in front of a select group of onlookers. Those Saudis clearly aren't as civilised. All that blood. Ugh!

Israel is in the process of annihilating an entire people, people whose land they stole with the complicity of the Great Powers of the era, more democracies. It isn't as clean as lethal injection, but as it is only against the Palestinians, Moore turns a blind eye.

But let's look at this interesting and curious notion of Israel as a "democracy". It is a very popular notion in the US and among supporters of Israel all around the world. Let's start with some news items from today...

Hydrologists warns of Israeli spreading diseases in N. Gaza

www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-03 19:36:52

GAZA, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The Association of Palestinian Hydrologists on Saturday called on all the legal institutions to work on disclosing the Israeli practices that aim at spreading diseases and epidemics in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun.

The association said in a communique issued earlier on Saturday that the Israel Army has caused huge amounts of destruction in Beit Hanoun's infrastructure and violates all the international norms and resolutions.

The communique said "the situation on Beit Hanoun is growing worse, where the Israel Army has destroyed the main sanitations and sewage networks and mixed them with potable water networks, the matter that might cause an environmental and health disasters."

The associations called on all the legal and human rights associations and institutions based in the Palestinian territories to work on revealing these Israeli practices that cause the spreading of diseases and urged them to save the town from a health catastrophe.

It also called on all Palestinians living in the town and its surrounding areas to be extremely cautious in dealing with such issues and take the necessary precaution.

No beheadings here, just the propagation of disease and epidemics among a civilian population. Hmmm, does anyone think this destruction happens by chance? Let Israeli and Zionist leaders speak for themselves:

"We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Palestinian population." Israel Koenig

That pretty well sums up the spreading of disease through destroyed Palestinian infrastructure, doesn't it?

"We must expel Arabs and take their places." David Ben Gurion, 1937

"We have to kill all the Palestinians unless they are resigned to live here as slaves." Chairman Heilbrun of the committee to re-elect General Shlomo Lahat, the mayor of Tel Aviv, in 1983.

For more quotes like this, check out this presentation.

Prior to their complete annihilation, the Palestinians are being herded into enclaves surrounded by the apartheid wall, a wall roundly condemned by the international community. One might think democracy would have something to do with listening to other members of this world community, as in the UN, however, Israelis and Americans are not willing to listen to others.

Israel to defy World Court ruling on barrier

7/3/2004 12:30:00 AM GMT

Israel says it would not accept next week's World Court ruling on its West Bank barrier.

Palestinians say Israel's construction of the barrier is a land grab aimed at thwarting the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

Valuable Palestinian agricultural lands have either been seized or demolished by Israeli occupation soldiers to make room for the wall's route.

The World Court says it would hand down an "advisory opinion." Such a ruling is not binding, but Israel fears the UN General Assembly, where pro-Palestinian sentiment is strong, could use it to lobby for sanctions against it.

Shalom said he was asking the US to do "everything it can" to block any resolution on the barrier that the Palestinians might bring to the UN Security Council.

With the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, due to deliver its judgment on the legality of the barrier on 9 July, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom on Friday said external involvement was unacceptable.

"We believe that Israel can deal with this issue by itself," Shalom said.

"We can't accept any external involvement from the International Court of Justice."

"We don’t believe it is the place that this issue should be discussed. It should be discussed between the two parties –the Israelis and the Palestinians - with other members that are involved in the peace process," he said.

Right. Israel can deal with it by itself, with the aid of the US and the billions of dollars the US sends over, not to mention the arms used to bring democracy to the Palestinians. Like that other bastion of "democracy", the USA, Israel ignores the international community...because democracy starts, and finishes, at home. Can't have any inklings of democracy on the world stage, among the nations and countries that make up the planet. That would be dangerous. While Sharon and Bush are willing to look the other way when they appear naked in public wearing their new clothes, the rest of the world is neither so blind nor so duped.

Next we look at Israel's plan to create a three-mile wide "security zone" in the northern Gaza strip.

Gaza: Israel's security 'concept'

[...] I don't have to hand the figures for the literally thousands of Lebanese and Palestinian people who lost their lives because of continued fighting across the SZ's northern front-line over the 15 years that followed that decision. Hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of Lebanese fixed-capital goods were destroyed in that fighting, too.

(Reparations from Israel, anyone?)

But we could just recall a few "high points" in the conflagrations that flared over that front-line: 1993, 1996, etc.

Oh, and along the way, the Israelis and their proxy forces in the SZ ran one of the Middle East's worst torture centers there, in the prison in Khiam. And they kidnaped random Lebanese clerics and held them for more than a dozen years as hostages. Etc., etc.

[...] So now, they're proposing a "security zone" (read "insecurity zone") for the northern part of Gaza, in turn?

Gimme a break. The fact that they're even thinking of trying to implement a "concept" like that seems like a fair indication that my suspicions that the whole "Gaza disengagement plan" is just a thinly-veiled scheme to turn the whole of Gaza into a free-fire zone for the IDF are more strongly founded than I thought.

Is Sharon's strategy to get rid of the Palestinian Authority in order to install an "Islamic" government that will be openly hostile to Israel, creating the conditions for Israel to wipe out the rest of the Palestinians there in the name of "self defence"? It would certainly be in character. If his bid to drive the Palestinians into civil war in order to kill each other off doesn't work, having the justification in the name of "security" will do. The important point is to be rid of them, no matter what the cost.

Those are the articles we found today. The following articles come from the excellent site EI: Electronic Intifada, which covers the ongoing murder and destruction in the occupied territories.

More thoughts on "democracy in Israel:

Israel's campaign of death continues unabated

[...] Then there is Israel. At a recent meeting of the central committee of the Likud Party, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, addressing hundreds of delegates, boasted about the extrajudicial killings his government has ordered. He read off a list of names of Palestinians assassinated by Israeli army death squads, or helicopter gunships, and after each name shouted "he's gone!" ("Bibi's back in town," Peretz Kidron, Middle East International, July 27, 2001) Sharon's boasting was supposed to mollify the delegates who were accusing him of being too soft and demanding even more brutality.

Such a bloodcurdling spectacle is difficult to imagine even in the worst dictatorship, let alone in a country calling itself a democracy, as Israel does. What also distinguishes Israel from countries like the UK and Spain is the near total absence of any dissent or outrage among politicians and journalists, almost all of whom justify Israel's assassination policy on the grounds of "self defence."

In the intervening period between the writing of this article and today, other "democracies" have found the expedient politicies of Israel to be to their liking, the US especially. Is this what they mean when they say that Israel is a "model democracy", that our own countries are going to look more and more like Israel?

Notice the reference to the UK and Spain. Spanish popular opposition to the invasion of Iraq was ignored by Aznar. He paid the electoral price. Will Sharon pay anything for his ruthlessness?

A few weeks ago, the New Yorker ran an article about the "settlements", you know, those outposts of Jewish "settlers" condemned by the international community (not them again!).

The New Yorker’s Israel: Where Objectivity Fails

Zachary Wales, The Electronic Intifada, 5 June 2004

[...] Under the subheading, “The Meaning of Zionism,” Goldberg outlines the founding notions of Theodore Hertzl’s Zionist movement as a “practical response of mainly religious men to the impossibility of Jewish life in Europe.” Goldberg writes that a Jewish national home in Palestine, built on the modern ideals of liberal democracy, was the answer to the rabid anti-Semitism of the late nineteenth century. Left out of this noble tale are the explicit expulsion orders of the Zionist leadership, which saw the expulsion of nearly 800,000 Palestinians during Israel’s “liberation” in 1948. Not to mention the documented massacres of Saliha (70-80 killed), Deir Yassin (100-110), Lod (250), Dawayima (hundreds) and Abu Shusha (70). Unless population transfer and genocide are the building blocks of liberal society, Goldberg’s historical premise for sanctifying Zionism is existential at best.

This rhetorical blunder could not stand on its own without the help of selective fact-checking. Throughout the piece, Goldberg frequently refers to Israel as a Jewish democracy, and states that “Arabs and Jews living inside Israel’s borders are judged by the same set of laws in the same courtrooms.” Goldberg’s careful semantics may be accurate, but his case for liberal democracy is promiscuous.

The first hit of a cursory Googling for “civil rights arab israel” reveals the Web site for the Arab Association for Human Rights. Founded in 1988 as a grassroots organization representing Israel’s 1.3 million Arabs (about 20 percent of the population), AAHR argues quite logically that Israel’s exclusively Jewish nature “overrides and compromises the extent to which it can be democratic.” The organization points out two direct forms of discrimination: any Jew and his descendents are granted nationality immediately upon immigration (Arabs have to meet a list of conditions); and Arabs cannot benefit from nor participate in Israel’s housing or settlement policy.

There are also innumerable indirect measures aimed at keeping Israeli Arabs economically immobile, thus totally ineffective members of a capitalist democracy. Among these is the Budget Law, which allocates about 50 percent less funding to Arab welfare budgets, school facilities and education programs. Additionally, Arabs, unlike Jews, are not allowed to serve in Israel’s military—doing so, after all, would mean turning weapons on one’s kindred in the occupied zones. As a consequence, Arabs are precluded from rather significant employment, housing and state childcare benefits that attend military service.

Expelling the Palestinians brings to mind the history of another glorious democracy, the one that wiped out millions of indigenous peoples while conquering the land "from sea to shing sea". Lack of funding for the Palestinians also brings to mind the situation of the Native Americans as well as the Blacks, that population that was brought in to be slaves and still lives under the influence of that history.

"We have to kill all the Palestinians unless they are resigned to live here as slaves." Chairman Heilbrun of the committee to re-elect General Shlomo Lahat, the mayor of Tel Aviv, in 1983.

So much in common, these two beacons of freedom.

"Go to the West Bank!" yelled the soldier

The first hint Fares Abu Mohamed and his wife had of the catastrophe about to befall them was the sudden roar of the massive bulldozer. That was at 9 o'clock this morning and their baby was still asleep in his cot. They were given 10 minutes to collect a few items and told to vacate the black tent and corrugated zinc shack that served as their make-shift home.

Fifteen minutes later Fares stood with his pregnant wife, his young son, his two sisters and his mother looking at the rubble of their home. Many of the family's possessions had been destroyed. There was no time to save the baby food and the police and soldiers even refused Fares a few extra minutes to salvage his wife's jewellery - her only personal possession. Instead the soldiers yelled at him "Go to the West Bank!"

Of course the irony is that were Fares and his family already in the West Bank there would have been nothing unusual about the dawn demolition of their house. It happens there all the time. But Fares does not live in the West Bank. He lives in Wadi al Naam in Israel's northern Negev and, like all Negev Bedouin, Fares and his family are Israeli citizens. They pay taxes and vote in national elections. Many Bedouins even serve in the Israeli Army.

So how can it be that Israeli citizens can have their home demolished by the authorities? Is such a thing possible? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. What makes it worse is that house demolitions are a regular occurrence. The explanation for them is simple. Fares and his fellow Bedouin are not Jews. They are Arabs and thus, as Shmuel Rifman, chairperson of the Ramat HaNegev Regional Council said on the occasion of Israel's 55th Independence Day: "We came to this country to establish a Jewish state in the land of Israel. Ben Gurion did not intend to establish a Bedouin state." He was echoing Moshe Dayan's well-known statement of July 1963 that "We [Israelis] must turn Bedouin into urban labourers. The Bedouin will no longer live on a land with his flocks, but will become an urbanite who comes home in the evening and puts on his slippers. The reality that is known as the Bedouin will disappear." Dayan's intention was to hand over Bedouin lands to Jewish settlers.

[...] What does this say about Israeli democracy? Democracy is more than simply paying taxes and having the vote. It requires the state to ensure that every citizen enjoys equal rights and access to justice -- something Arab citizens of Israel clearly do not enjoy. Until early 2002, out of 3,000 Bedouin cases brought before Israeli courts, not one had been decided in favour of the Bedouins. Not one! For the Bedouin of Israel, democracy is a myth, as it is for the rest of the 20 percent of Israel's population that is not Jewish.

Here we see that Israeli citizenship is no guarantee for "democractic rights". If you are not a Jew, then you are a second class citizen. This is further demonstrated in the following article:

Love and marriage in Israel

Suraya Dadoo, The Electronic Intifada, 7 November 2003

In February last year, Gili and Sagi, a young Israeli couple, were "married" at sea - a marriage that was not legally recognised by the State of Israel. Although they are both Jewish, the couple objected to the only marriage option open to them in Israel: an Orthodox Jewish ceremony. Instead, they chose a marriage contract that they drew up themselves, together with a lawyer, thus rendering their union illegal.

On the other side of the divide, Aneesa, an Arab Israeli, who holds a Jerusalem ID, married a Jordanian three years ago. "Because he also carries a Gaza identity card, he is not allowed in Jerusalem. Forget getting his own Jerusalem ID, he is not even allowed to visit here," says Aneesa. She cannot remember the last time she saw her husband.

For all the differences that exist between these two couples, they share one major parallel: both couples are unhappy with the current marriage laws in Israel. Paradoxically, Israel is touted as the only "democracy" in the world that does not offer its citizens the option of civil marriage. Since 1953, only Orthodox Jewish marriages, and civil marriages performed outside Israel, have been legally recognised by the Israeli state. While interfaith and other religious marriages are not prohibited, they are also not legally recognised by the state.

We'll finish off with a story about Mordecai Vanunu, the Israeli jailed for 18 years, 11 of them in solitary confinement, for telling the world what everyone already knew, that Israel has nuclear weapons.

Why Israel is still afraid of Mordechai Vanunu

Jonathan Cook, The Electronic Intifada, 28 June 2004

Mordechai Vanunu reads a newspaper in the grounds of the Anglican cathedral of St George's, East Jerusalem. (Meir Vanunu)
He was the last breakfast companion I was expecting. Separated from me by a rack of toast and a handful of marmalade sachets was Mordechai Vanunu, the man who 18 years ago revealed that Israel had amassed a secret stockpile of nuclear weapons. Breakfast at the St George's pilgrim guest house in East Jerusalem is usually a sedate affair, but on this occasion both he and I were skating unintentionally but dangerously close to arrest by Israel's security services.

Vanunu, who found sanctuary in the grounds of the Anglican cathedral of St George's when he was released from jail two months ago, is under a severe gagging order imposed by the Israeli government. He is banned from talking to all foreigners and most especially foreign journalists as the former Sunday Times reporter Peter Hounam discovered a few weeks ago when he was arrested by the Shin Bet secret services, held in a cell for 24 hours and then deported. Hounam's crime was to arrange an interview for the BBC with Vanunu, trying to get round the restrictions by using an Israeli citizen to pose the questions.

These are not the only invisible bars still imprisoning Vanunu: he is also banned from entering internet chat rooms, he must not approach any foreign embassies, and his phone calls are being continously monitored.

But the severest restriction has been the confiscation of his passport to prevent him from leaving the country — an infringement of his civil liberties he is currently challenging in the courts. Vanunu says that since his release he has been receiving a flood of death threats from Israelis, most of whom revile him as a traitor, and that he wants to leave for the safety of Europe or the United States.

But they don't behead people.

So keep telling it like it is, Michael. Like it is in Hollywood where your film is financed and distributed by people of what religion/ethnic background?

Of course, to suggest that Moore says not a word about Israel in his film, or about the links between Bush and Likud, because of the strong influence of the Jewish lobby in the US and in Hollywood is to open oneself to charges of anti-Semitism. Ask yourself the question: would Moore have gotten his financing if he had raised questions about Mossad and Moving Companies or any of the other potential links between Mossad and 9/11?

Secrets Of Unit 1391

Uncovering an Israeli jail that specializes in nightmares

By Dan Ephron
Newsweek

June 28 issue - Sometimes a country's darkest secrets have a way of surfacing in the most offhanded manner. Gad Kroizer, an Israeli historian, was researching old British police buildings when he stumbled on a 70-year-old map drawn by a government architect. The map showed the location of 62 police compounds built by the British in Palestine in the late 1930s and early 1940s where both Arabs and Jews who agitated against Britain's occupation were interrogated. What caught Kroizer's eye was a camp called Meretz, which he had not seen on any contemporary Israeli map or read about in any modern writing on security compounds in the Jewish state. "There was a discrepancy between the map I had and the lists I'd been looking at," says Kroizer, who lives in Jerusalem and teaches at Bar-Ilan University. "I started putting two and two together."

What Kroizer had discovered and later footnoted in an academic paper (published in the March 2004 issue of Cathedra, circulation: 1,500) was the location of an ultrasecret jail where Israel has held Arabs in total seclusion for years, barred visits by the Red Cross and allegedly tortured inmates. Known as 1391, the facility is used as an interrogation center by a storied unit of Israel's military intelligence, whose members—all Arabic speakers—are trained to wring confessions from the toughest militants. According to Arabs who've been imprisoned in 1391, some of the methods are reminiscent of Abu Ghraib: nudity as a humiliation tactic, compromising photographs, sleep deprivation. In a few cases, at least, interrogators at 1391 appear to have gone beyond Israel's own hair-splitting distinction between torture and what a state commission referred to in 1987 as "moderate physical pressure."

Comment: Translation: The Israelis regularly torture prisoners.

But the nightmare for those in 1391 is the isolation and the fear that no one knows where you are, say Arabs who've been held there as well as an Israeli who's been inside the prison. The location of the compound is so hush-hush that a court this year banned a visit by an Israeli legislator. Prisoners describe being hooded everywhere at the facility except in their cells. Jailers often tell them they're on the moon or in another country (in fact, the compound is less than an hour's drive from Tel Aviv). "This can be devastating emotionally," says Dalia Kerstein, whose Israeli human-rights group, HaMoked, has petitioned the High Court of Justice to close down 1391. "We've seen that psychological pressure in certain instances can be even harder on inmates than physical pressure."

Hassan Rawajbeh would be the first to agree. A member of the nearly disbanded Palestinian Preventive Security force suspected of taking part in a shooting attack on Israelis, Rawajbeh was picked up by soldiers in Nablus 18 months ago. After stops at two other detention centers, he was hooded, handcuffed and thrown on the floor of a van. When the hood was removed, he was in a tiny, windowless cell with black walls and almost no light. The chamber contained no toilet, only a bucket in the corner, which the 39-year-old Rawajbeh says his jailers would empty once every few weeks. A low buzzing droned constantly. Rawajbeh, who denies shooting at Israelis, was never beaten, but he says he was on the verge of a breakdown. "I was jailed six times before," he said earlier this month at his office in Nablus, where other Palestinians, some armed with pistols, smoke cigarettes and drink coffee. "But those experiences were like five-star hotels compared to 1391."

For nearly four months, Rawajbeh saw no one but his interrogators, who kept him naked for days at a time and prevented him from going to the bathroom. "You begin to feel like the jail exists only for you, that no one else is there," he says.

Israeli officials deny torturing inmates at 1391 or any other facility. But Gideon Ezra, the former deputy head of Israel's Shabak security service, says psychological pressure is one of the most effective tools interrogators have in the war against terrorism. Ezra, now a member of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Likud Party and his cabinet, says 1391 was actually set up as an interrogation center for non-Palestinian Arabs who entered Israel illegally. (Ezra says the number 1391 corresponds to the adjacent military base and has no particular significance.) "In cases like that, you need to find out very quickly who this person is and how he might harm you."

But at least one former inmate at 1391 says the comparison to Abu Ghraib is fitting. Mustapha Dirani was brought to the facility after being abducted by Israeli commandos from his home in Lebanon in 1994. Israel believed Dirani knew the whereabouts of a missing airman, Ron Arad, and wanted to glean information quickly, while he was still stunned from the kidnapping. Dirani, who returned to Lebanon five months ago in a prisoner swap, said in a phone interview that he was raped by a soldier in those first days at 1391 and sodomized by an interrogator he identified as George. His civil suit against the state for more than $1 million in damages is scheduled to start in January. "It's the same style as in Abu Ghraib. They take advantage of the fact that Arabs and Muslims are culturally conservative," says Dirani, who spent eight years at 1391 but was never tried for a crime. In what might look to some people like a foreshadowing of Abu Ghraib, Dirani said in an affidavit four years ago that he was interrogated naked for days and photographed repeatedly.

George has since left the intelligence unit that operates at 1391, according to Kerstein of HaMoked. She believes the Army might be worried the interrogator will divulge other scandals if the Dirani case ever goes to trial. In an interview with Israel's Channel Two television four months ago, George said Dirani invented the rape story to avoid retribution back in Lebanon for information he divulged to the Israelis.

Kroizer, the academic who stumbled on 1391, is still surprised by the attention his footnote received. Days after his paper was published, his editor got a call from Israel's military censor, who wanted to know why the article had not been submitted for inspection. "We publish an historical journal. We usually deal with issues that are at least 30 years old," says the editor, Benjamin Zeev Wexler. "But I thought it was interesting to note that this old British interrogation center was still operating today." For a few hundred Arabs held there over the years, it was no news at all.

Guilty pleas in Mossad passport scam case

03 July 2004
By DEBORAH DIAZ

Two Israeli men alleged to have foreign intelligence links pleaded guilty to passport fraud yesterday when they appeared in the High Court at Auckland.

Eli Cara, 40, and Urie Kelman, 31, had previously denied being involved in trying to obtain a New Zealand passport for a third man, Zev Barkan, in the name of a man bed-ridden with cerebral palsy.

The Crown filed an amended indictment yesterday charging the men with belonging to an organised criminal group, including Barkan and persons unknown, that tried to obtain the passport in March this year.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years' prison.

Both men arrived at court wearing smart suits, with Kelman also wearing a balaclava till he entered the hearing room.

Justice Judith Potter asked for the charge to be read to the pair as they stood in the dock. When asked how they wished to plead, both said: Guilty.

They were remanded in custody till sentencing on July 15.

The men were arrested on March 23 after Internal Affairs Department staff became suspicious of unspecified irregularities in the urgent application for a passport and called police. A covert sting was then set up by arranging for a fake passport to be delivered to a central Auckland apartment block.

Barkan had left New Zealand for Australia three days earlier.

The case hit the headlines amid revelations that the two accused were suspected to have links to the Israeli intelligence service, and the New Zealand Government had complained to the Canberra-based Israeli ambassador.

War On Error: CIA Creation of al-Zarqawi Demystified

Thursday, July 01

If Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the terrorist leader credited with the beheading deaths of Nick Berg and Kim Sun-Il, did not exist it would be necessary for the United States to invent him. That may well be what the CIA has done. What? Really? Is that credible? Would an intelligence and espionage service really murder its own people, or neutrals, or citizens of an allied country? Would it cynically kill harmless civilians with terrorist-style bombings? Would it snuff out the lives of innocents to make a political point or create a climate of fear?

Is al-Zarqawi a false flag operative?

The answer is Yes. For an example and we need look no further that the career of Iyad Allawi, the new, hand-picked, prime minister of Iraq. According to a New York Times report in June this year, former CIA operatives say Allawi, who ran a CIA-backed exile organization, the Iraqi National Accord (INA), organised a bombing and sabotage campaign in the early 1990s. The targets included a cinema and a school bus. At the time the CIA was trying to foment a military coup against Saddam Hussein and it is probable that the bombing campaign was intended to destabilise the regime by creating a climate of fear and instability.

In the espionage community, operations like this, for which no group claims responsibility, are known as "grey operations". If they are attributed to a source other than that which carried them out, they’re called "black operations" and they’re carried out by "false flag" operatives.

In the "wilderness of mirrors" that is espionage, black ops have a long and seedy history. The British army employed them in their colonial war against Kenya’s nationalist Mau Mau Guerillas, where they fielded bands known as the "Pseudo Mau Mau" to infiltrate and hunt down the real nationalists. These bands were largely made up of common criminals or Mau Mau guerrillas who had been "turned". In order to create a climate of opinion favourable to the colonial administration the Pseudo Mau Mau did not hesitate to kill missionaries and innocent villagers. The same tactics were used by the South African Apartheid regime in its struggle against the African National Congress. Sophisticated false flag operations carefully manipulate half-mad or opportunist followers of a cause.

Nowadays CNN and the CIA sees Zarqawi’s hand in dozens of events, ranging from the beheading of Nick Berg (where he supposedly wielded the knife) to the ricin poison attacks supposedly thwarted in several countries and the Madrid train bombing.

But if the CIA has the genuine spectre of Osama bin Laden to justify its agenda, why would it need Zarqawi?

Well, as a bogeyman, bin Laden was always a distinct liability. His long and well-documented connection to the CIA, the Bush family and the Texas oil industry are a major embarrassment. By contrast, Zarqawi is a shadowy figure with no worrying connections to the American establishment. He is the terrorist monster straight from Central Casting, almost tailor-made for the grim realities of the post-invasion period and the run-up to the US and Australian elections. Supposedly he is a Sunni from an impoverished Palestinian family in Jordan. To CNN, he is, conveniently, a "master of disguise" and "lone wolf", acting independently of al-Qaeda.

Reportedly, Zarqawi is not much liked by the bulk of the Iraqi resistance, and why would he be? Everything he has ever done objectively aided the US propaganda machine. Particularly telling is his plan to advance the Islamist agenda by provoking civil war between Sunnis and Shias. The plot is set out in a rambling nine-page letter from al-Zarqawi to Osama bin Laden. It was supposedly captured by the occupation forces and was helpfully published on the Coalition Provisional Authority’s website. Sectarian strife is contrary to the policy of the real resistance leaders, either the secularist and Sunni fighters centred on Baghdad and Fallujah or Muqtada al-Sadr’s Shi’ite Madhi Army, both of which have emphasised unity in the struggle to defeat the American-lead occupation.

And there is a relentless predictability to the terrorist preparations and atrocities attributed to Zarqawi. In Colin Powell’s WMD speech at the UN, Zarqawi’s training camp (ironically located in the US-protected Kurdish enclave in Northern Iraq) was best evidence of a link between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, The Berg beheading came to George Bush’s aid just as the Abu Ghraib scandal broke; the Sun-Il job was perfectly timed to harden the Korean Government’s resolve to send more troops to Iraq.

Short of a guilt-driven confession by the perpetrators, it is in the nature of black operations that the truth can never be established with certainty, but history cautions us to distrust the official line, and to ask "who profits?"

America has sown the seeds of civil war in Iraq

It's not religious rivalry but the puppet regime that threatens stability

Sami Ramadani
Saturday July 3, 2004
The Guardian

They get their dead in neat caskets draped with a flag; we have to gather and scrape our dead off of the floors and hope the American shrapnel and bullets left enough to make a definite identification." So wrote the author of the weblog Baghdad Burning, as she tried to draw attention to the tragic reality of life in occupied Baghdad.

It is this bereavement and anger among Iraqis - some of it expressed in mortars and homemade bombs - that has forced Bush and Blair to abandon any fanfare and hand over "sovereignty" in a secret bunker guarded by tanks. Not one signal of popular joy greeted the historic event.

In a parallel but equally deceptive move, the US handed over Saddam's legal file but the tyrant is still in US custody. Saddam's defiance in court largely stems from the fact that many of his accusers - including Prime Minister Allawi, a former cadre of Saddam's Ba'ath party, and some of the non-Ba'athist forces represented in the transitional government - were allies of his regime. Many Iraqis feel that the US-appointed transitional government has no moral authority over the man in the dock, both because of their past association with his regime and because they came, in the words of a now common Iraqi saying, "on the backs of American tanks". As one Iraqi observed: "If they give Saddam a fair trial, they will all end up with him in the dock - Kissinger, Reagan, Thatcher, Blair, the two Bushes and Allawi."

Iraqis plan rival government

By Ahmed Janabi
Aljazeera
Saturday 03 July 2004, 22:00 GMT

Sources close to Saddam Hussein's family have said that calls for former Iraqi officials to form a government in exile are gaining ground.

The Egyptian international law counsel Hasan Umar told Aljazeera.net he believesthat if Ragad Saddam Hussein and former Iraqi officials form a rival government, they would shorten the life of the "Iraqi occupation".

"A government in exile would be a threat to the Iraqi interim government of Iyad Allawi that would prevent him from continuing to grant privileges to the US-led occupation forces," he said.

"Many former Iraqi officials are living outside Iraq, and can help in forming and exile government, which will help a lot in stopping the US plans in the region."

History lessons

Comparing the current Iraqi interim government to France's 1940 Vichy government, he said there are many lessons to be learned from history.

"Who liberated France from the Nazis? It was De Gaul's government in exile, not the Vichy government which was installed by the Nazi occupiers," Umar said.

"A government in exile would give Iraqis the chance to choose instead of accepting one choice delivered by the occupiers"

Dr Dhafir al-Ani, Iraqi political analyst

Aljazeera.net spoke to Saddam's cousin and one-time bodyguard before his 1995 defection. He said that he is ready to announce a government in exile if there is an Arab or Muslim country willing to host it.

"The problem is Arab and Muslim states think that such a step means an anti-US act, and since the world is terrified from the US in an unprecedented way, it is not possible to take such a step in the present time," said Izz al-Din al-Majid.

Choice

Iraqi political analyst Dhafir al-Ani said a government in exile would give international players the chance to ask the US to consult the Iraqi people.

"Rulers have been imposed on Iraqis, first the Governing Council, and now the interim government. A government in exile would give Iraqis the chance to choose instead of accepting one choice delivered by the occupiers," said al-Ani.

Saddam Hussein's defence lawyer Muhammad al-Rashdan said the move deserves deep consideration.

"We will consider the formation of a government in exile from a legal point of view, if we sensed it useful to built our case in defending the legitimate president of Iraq Mr. Saddam Hussein, we will back it with all our might," al-Rashdan said.

Sounds of silence

Pamela McClintock
Wed Jun 30,10:07 PM ET

NEW YORK -- U.S. news networks agreed to let the American military censor out certain images of Saddam Hussein's court hearing Thursday in Baghdad, one in a bizarre series of events surrounding coverage of the session.

American and Iraqi officials did not want any footage shown of Iraqi guards or court personnel, and they asked broadcast and cable news nets to honor this request.

But the situation took an unexpected turn even before the hearing began, when U.S. officials ordered CNN and Al-Jazeera, the pool camera crews, to disconnect their audio equipment. Officials said it was the wish of the Iraqi judge.

Following the hearing, the CNN footage was taken to the convention center, where a CBS News employee transmitted the footage after it was viewed and okayed by two military censors.

As the silent footage of Hussein began to air on U.S. networks around 8:30 a.m. ET, CBS News anchor Dan Rather explained that the tapes had been "taken to another location, edited, and what you're seeing is in effect a censored version" of what happened in court earlier today.

"And whether you will hear what happened in court is yet to be determined. We know that Saddam Hussein challenged the whole legitimacy of the court," Rather said.

TV journalists were frustrated by the fact that there was no audio -- at least initially. It turned out that some of the footage had ambient sound, albeit in Arabic.

It's also possible that some of the footage was supplied by Dept. of Defense cameras, which were allowed to record sound. Throughout the day, several news nets said it wasn't always clear which footage was from what source, and that it could have been DOD footage, meaning the Pentagon was directly controlling what was being heard.

The two U.S. military officials watching over the CNN footage being transmission ordered that some of the ambient sound be muted. However, other portions of CNN tapes with audio may have been allowed to go through.

News nets receiving the transmissions were alerted to the fact that authorities had ordered that there be no audio, and it was up to each individual net to decide whether to air that part of the video that had sound.

Soundbite search

Some news editors spent hours scouring the portion of the tape with audio for harsh words leveled at President Bush by Saddam, but could not find the quote reported by New York Times reporter John Burns, who was the pool print reporter in the courtroom and accompanied by a translator. Burns reported that Saddam said, "Everyone knows that this is a theatrical comedy by Bush, the criminal, in an attempt to win the election."

The only other Western journalists in the courtroom were ABC News anchor Peter Jennings and CNN's Christiane Amanpour. [...]

Warheads found in Iraq not chemical weapons, military says

BAGHDAD (AFP) Jul 02, 2004

Multinational forces in Iraq said on Friday that more than a dozen missile warheads said to contain mustard gas or sarin have tested negative for chemical agents.

Washington had announced the find by Polish troops on Thursday, which was later confirmed by Warsaw.

The head of Poland's military intelligence service also said on Friday that "terrorist" groups were seeking to acquire the weapons.

But the 122mm warheads, found in late June, have been found not to contain the deadly chemicals, a statement from multinational forces here said.

"Those 16 rounds were all empty and tested negative for any type of chemicals," it said.

Two other warheads found in mid-June were found to contain an insignificant amount of sarin gas. The armaments were left over from the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, the statement said.

"Due to the deteriorated state of the rounds and small quantity of remaining agent, these rounds were determined to have limited to no impact if used by insurgents against coalition forces."

Washington justified leading the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 by claiming the country was harbouring weapons of mass destruction. However, none has yet been found.

UK sells WMD components to ‘axis of evil’ countries

By Neil Mackay Investigations Editor

BRITAIN is now a leading exporter of components of weapons of mass destruction. The UK has sold the components for chemical weapons to 40 countries including North Korea and Iran, both deemed part of the so-called "axis of evil". Libya, which has only recently come in from the cold after decades of being labelled a "state-sponsor of terrorism", also bought chemical weapons technology from the UK. Britain is also selling chemical weapons capabilities to India and Pakistan – deadly enemies whose hatred could boil over into full-scale war.

Details of the sales are contained in the government’s Strategic Export Control report published on Monday. Chemical weapons are illegal under international law and controlled under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The products that Britain is selling are known as toxic chemical precursors (TCPs) that, when combined with other compounds, create weapons such as sarin – the nerve agent – and mustard gas.

Many of the countries that the UK exports chemical weaponry to have poor human rights records , are in the grip of brutal conflicts , and are terribly impoverished .

Two years ago, the Sunday Herald revealed the extent of the UK’s sale of chemical weapons in an award-winning investigation into Britain’s chemical bazaar. We revealed that some 26 countries – including Libya, Israel and Iran – were buying chemical weapon components from the UK.

The UK has since upped the sale of these components .

Following the Sunday Herald’s investigation , Labour MP Ann Clwyd said she would raise the sale of TCPs with the Prime Minister and ask him to pass legislation allowing MPs to scrutinise all weapon exports.

Nicholas Gilby of Campaign Against the Arms Trade, said the UK’s actions were "potentially very dangerous and destabilising".

Labour MP Paul Flynn, a critic of the invasion of Iraq, said: "The cynicism of providing weapons to both sides makes it difficult to call the UK’s foreign policy ‘ethical’.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "When we consider export licences we consider the end use as thoroughly as we can."

Comment: There you have it folks, straight from a mainstream newspaper. Countries like Britain and the US are "providing weapons to both sides". There is no difference between this and our repeated assertions that countries like the US and Britain are fighting the war on terror on both sides. Not only that, the intelligence agencies of these countries are tasked with creating the enemy, and then waging a war to attack that enemy. It is a charade, nothing more.

US may keep 145,000 troops in Iraq up to 5 years: Myers

AFP
Sat. July 03, 2004

A force of 145,000 US troops may be needed in Iraq for as many as five years, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff General Richard Myers said Thursday.

"We can do that and we've got plans to do that for as long as it takes, because this will be event-driven, not time-line driven," the told PBS television.

The US military announced earlier in the week it will recall around 5,600 troops who already served in Iraq for support and logistics duty, and Myers said the call-back was needed to beef up current troop strength.

"We're a 20th-century force in a 21st-century security environment," he said.

"In the meantime, we have to rely on other tools," he said.

"It will take six months, a year, a year-and-a-half, two years, three years, probably four or five years before we get this force set to have the kind of skills where we need them to do the kind of things we need to do in this security environment," he said.

Four U.S. Soldiers Charged in Iraq Prisoner Drowning

By Will Dunham
Fri Jul 2, 7:51 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army has charged four soldiers, three of them with manslaughter, after the drowning of an Iraqi prisoner who was pushed off a bridge, while a senior general criticized U.S. military detention policies, officials said on Friday.

The soldiers, on patrol near the city of Samarra 60 miles north of Baghdad on Jan. 3, pushed two Iraqis off a bridge at nighttime into the Tigris River after picking up the men on a curfew violation, officials said. One Iraqi drowned, while the other got out of the river.

The case followed revelations about ill-treatment of military prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base in Cuba.

First Lt. Jack Saville, 24, and Sgt. 1st Class Tracy Perkins, 33, were charged on June 7 with involuntary manslaughter, assault, conspiracy, making false statements and obstruction of justice. Saville faces up to 26 years in prison and Perkins up to 26 1/2 years if convicted.

Two others were charged on Monday. Sgt. Reggie Martinez, 24, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and making a false official statement. Martinez faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Spec. Terry Bowman, 21, was charged with assault and making a false official statement. Bowman, accused of pushing the Iraqi who survived the fall into the river, faces up to 5 1/2 years if convicted.

All four soldiers, who served in the 4th Infantry Division, will face the military version of a grand jury proceeding before a decision is made on courts-martial. [...]

In another development involving prisoners in U.S. military custody, lawyers representing nine prisoners at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay filed lawsuits in federal court in Washington arguing their detention was unlawful and unconstitutional and seeking their release. [...]

New claim of prisoner abuse emerges in Afghanistan

July 3, 2004

KABUL (AFP) - The US military said it was investigating a new allegation of prisoner abuse, the third to be examined in Afghanistan following revelations of detainee abuse in Iraq.

"This week the coalition reviewed a new allegation of detainee abuse occurring within its area of responsibility," US military spokesman Major Jon Siepmann said. "The Naval Criminal Investigation Service is looking into the allegation."

Two allegations of prisoner abuse emerged in Afghanistan following international outcry over the treatment of detainees in Iraq. The allegations are believed to include assault, poor living conditions and sleep deprivation.

Siepmann said he was unable to comment on where or when the latest abuse supposedly took place or any other details regarding the allegation.

"Right now it's just an allegation, we don't know that anything in particular occurred," he said. "We cannot release any of the details of the investigation itself."

Siepmann said the Naval Criminal Investigation Service usually looked into cases involving "naval and marine corps issues".

"They were the appropriate entity to conduct the investigation," he said.

The US military is also investigating the deaths of five Afghans, three of which occurred while the deceased was in US custody. Two of these deaths, which occurred in December 2002, were the result of "blunt-force injuries". [...]

'I apologise to all Muslims for what my country has done'

By ROBERT SMITH
Gulf Daily News
Thursday 1 July 2004

MANAMA: A US lawyer representing three Bahraini Guantanamo Bay detainees has hit out against his own government, which he accused of trampling on the rights of prisoners.Clive Stafford Smith apologised for what he called "the misguided actions" of the US administration and pledged to secure a lawyer for each detainee free of charge.

His promise came just two days after the US Supreme Court granted detainees the right to appeal against their detention through the American legal system.

That verdict marked a huge victory for human rights campaigners and lawyers, who argued that prisoners were being denied basic rights, including the right to a fair trial.

"As an American national, I am deeply ashamed of what my government has done," Mr Stafford Smith said in a letter to the GDN.

"It is profoundly hypocritical for us to pretend that we are fighting a war to spread the rule of law to Afghanistan and Iraq and - as our first action - deprive people of the very rights we say we are fighting for.

"Hypocrisy is the yeast that leavens hatred and it is hardly surprising that so many people express their disdain for us."

Mr Stafford Smith has spent 20 years working in the US as a Death Row lawyer - mostly for black prisoners sentenced to die by the American judicial system.

The British-born lawyer, who has been awarded the OBE, also represents an organisation called Justice in Exile. [...]

US warns of booby-trapped beer coolers

Holiday terror alerts are getting annoying

by Dave Addis
The [Norfolk] Virginian-Pilot

Don’t touch that Bud, buddy, or it might blow up in your face.

Boiled to its essence, that’s the theme of a "lightly classified" warning that the FBI reportedly sent to 18,000 law enforcement agencies with the Fourth of July holiday approaching.

It seems that the feds have decided -- with no supporting evidence whatsoever -- that al-Qaida operatives or other evildoers might attack the U.S. coastline this holiday weekend with floating Styrofoam beer coolers laden with explosives rigged to detonate on contact.

Heaven knows that we all have reason to be sharp-eyed for acts of terrorism, and to take them seriously. But these baseless "alerts" every time a national holiday rolls around are beginning to get annoying. They smack of a "Cover Your Assets" mentality in the burgeoning federal anti-terror industry.

According to Time magazine, the local authorities were warned to "look out for plastic-foam containers, inner tubes and other waterborne flotsam" that commonly wash up around harbors, marinas and beaches.

But the magazine also reported that officials with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security acknowledged that "no such devices have actually been discovered, nor is there any current intelligence that terrorists are hatching plots involving floating bombs."

If that’s true, then why the warning? And if a warning were necessary, why keep it "classified"?

Wouldn’t it be prudent to alert the citizens most likely to encounter a bobbing beer bomb in the water?

The fishermen, boaters, beachcombers, surfers, swimmers, sunbathers, scuba divers, crabbers, Jet Ski jockeys, kayakers, canoeists and anybody else who’ll be flocking to the beaches and waterways over the weekend? That is, all the rest of us?

After all, we’re likely to outnumber waterborne law-enforcement officers by a ratio of about 10,000-to-1. But no such warning was forthcoming. Federal law enforcement kept the alert hidden under its 10-gallon hat.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they didn’t want to panic anyone. Perhaps they didn’t want scenes reminiscent of Jaws, with horror-stricken beachgoers stampeding for their lives every time a rubber ducky washes ashore.

I once lost a Styrofoam beer cooler when I flipped a sailboat and the current swept away my brewskies before I could get righted. I’d hate to think that such an innocent act could now lead to a terror alert and a hysterical evacuation of the shoreline if my errant cooler were seen bobbing in the surf.

The "bobbing beer cooler" alert over the Fourth of July, with no supporting evidence at all, makes about as much sense as issuing an alert before Christmas that we might be attacked at any moment by evildoers masquerading as elves or reindeer.

Any of those things could happen. But there’s a difference between a terror warning of what is possible and a terror warning of what is probable.

And that makes all the difference between a public that is rightfully cautious and a public that is simply scared out of its wits.

Comment: Exactly. So why not consider the possibility that these terrorism warnings are specifically designed to terrify the population? By including statements about not having any actual evidence of a threat, the US government gives those who actually pay attention to what they are reading something to latch onto as a "rational explanation" for the warnings - i.e. the government is just trying to cover its "assets". Meanwhile, the majority of the people are completely terrified and more than willing to give up their freedoms in return for safety from threats that have been clearly described as nonexistent.

1000 Days of Continuous Cover-Up

The 9/11 Commission's report of Mohamed Atta's final days does not match what’s already on the record.

madcowproductions
June 26

Exactly 1000 days after hijacked airliners crashed into the World Trade Center the American people finally heard public testimony, during the final hearings of the 9/11 Commission last week in Washington, D.C., about the plot that took nearly 3000 lives.

It wasn’t worth the wait.

"9/11: the Plot" was the subject of a day-long hearing on what were supposed to be the specifics of the conspiracy. But the distortions, inaccuracies, omissions, and evasions offered during the session suggests that the real 9/11 plot involves efforts by the FBI to keep the American people in the dark, for whatever reason, about the facts of the attack.

Still, the trickle of new evidence released cleared up several questions and ‘conspiracy theories’ which some found compelling: the notion that there weren't any Arab hijackers on the planes (the dread Remote Controllers); and the suspicion that a NORAD stand-down had allowed the attack to succeed.

But staff and FBI testimony also created a major new mystery: Why doesn't the account given by FBI and staff investigators about the final days of the terrorist conspiracy match what's already on the public record?

The discrepancies, to no one's surprise, call into question the credibility of the FBI’s basic chronology of the terrorist conspiracy.

Bottom line: there's hard physical evidence to prove that something is very wrong with the only official explanation the American people are ever likely to get. [...]

Long Debunked "Rumor" Validated by Giuliani

FEMA in NYC prior to 9-11 for Project TRIPOD terror drill, scheduled for 9-12

By Gregor Holland
Scoop.co.nz

As of this writing, June 2, 2004, the transcript of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's testimony to the 9-11 Commission during the May 18-19, 2004 hearings in New York is the only transcript of that hearing omitted from the Commission website ( http://www.9-11commission.gov).

Did Rudy say something wrong?

In case you missed it live, you can listen to his testimony in full at the WNYC radio website at: http://www.wnyc.org/news/articles/28147. As Giuliani recounts his experience of the day of 9/11, and the evolving location of the Emergency Command Center that morning, you might want to pay special attention to what he says at the end of his prepared statement:

"... the reason Pier 92 was selected as a command center was because on the next day, on September 12, Pier 92 was going to have a drill, it had hundreds of people here, from FEMA, from the Federal Government, from the State, from the State Emergency Management Office, and they were getting ready for a drill for biochemical attack. So that was gonna be the place they were going to have the drill. The equipment was already there, so we were able to establish a command center there, within three days, that was two and a half to three times bigger than the command center that we had lost at 7 World Trade Center. And it was from there that the rest of the search and rescue effort was completed."

Readers may remember that on the days immediately after 9/11/01 there was a nasty little rumor running around the internet that FEMA had arrived in NYC on Monday September 10, thus implying foreknowledge of the disaster. The source of the rumor was a September 13, 2001 interview between CBS News anchor Dan Rather and Tom Kennedy (later corrected to Kenney) of FEMA National Urban Search and Rescue. Here is a transcript of the brief interview:

Rather: "Tom Kennedy... Kenney, a rescue worker with the National Urban Search and Rescue, it's part of FEMA... "

Kennedy: "We're currently one of the first teams that was deployed to support the city of New York for this disaster. We arrived on late Monday night, and went into action on Tuesday morning. And not until today did we get a full opportunity to work the entire site."

The rumors which subsequently ravaged online chatrooms and 9/11 websites were officially denied by FEMA. In a November 15, 2001 WorldNetDaily piece titled "FEMA: No prior knowledge of 9-11: Agency dispels Net rumor, says team didn't arrive in NYC Sept. 10", Jon Dougherty wrote: ( http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=25329)

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency has said it did not have urban search and rescue teams in place in New York City prior to the Sept. 11 attacks, contrary to an Internet-based rumor alleging otherwise.

In the interview, Kenney misspoke when he said he and his team arrived in New York City and were "finally on the ground" and deployed by "Monday night. ... " If accurate, that would have meant the team arrived Sept. 10 - the night before the attacks.

According to a spokesman in the office of Vito Pizzi, who works in FEMA's federal coordination office, a total of 16 teams were put on alert or activated Sept. 11. Two of those teams were sent in to Ground Zero the next day, Sept. 12.

FEMA officials said Kenney, in the head of the moment, misstated his team's arrival date. Kenney could not be reached for comment."

Comment: There is one possible problem with the above official story that has not been mentioned. The FEMA worker Tom Kenny originally stated that he had arrived on Monday night (10th Sept), one day before the attacks, which would suggest that FEMA knew in advance that the attacks were going to happen. It was later claimed by Kenny's wife and FEMA that he has made a simple mistake with the day and that he had in fact arrived in NYC the evening of the 11th and went to work the morning of the 12th. Kenny's actual words from the CBS interview are:

"We arrived on late Monday night, and went into action on Tuesday morning.

Case closed? Well, maybe, but Kenny then states:

"And not until today did we get a full opportunity to work the entire site."

If we are to believe FEMA's story that Kenny simply made a mistake and what he meant to say was "We arrived on late Tuesday night, and went into action on Wednesday (12th) morning", would we really expect him to say on the 13th that, "not until today did we get a full opportunity to work the entire site."?

His phrase "And not until today did we get a full opportunity to work the entire site." suggests a significant time lapse between his arrival and his chance to work the entire site. But the official story claims that he arrived the night of the 11th, went to work the morning of the 12th and then got to work the entire site the morning of the 13th, the same day he gave the interview. Considering the situation, it seems unlikely that Kenny would use the term "not until today" if he actually got to work the entire site the second day after he arrived in NYC. It is perhaps more likely that he would say, "not until today did we get to work the entire site" if he had arrived in NYC on the night of the 10th, as he originally stated in the interview, and then had to wait two full days before getting to "work the entire site". A long shot? Perhaps, but in the face of a massive cover up, it is in collecting and combining discrepancies such as this that we can come to an approximation of what the actual truth is.

Speaking of cover ups...

U.N. observers requested for U.S. election

House members send letter to Secretary General Annan

Worried about the fairness of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, several House members have asked the United Nations to "deploy election observers" across the country.

Recalling the contentious Florida vote count in 2000, the lawmakers urged the international body to "ensure free and fair elections in America," said a statement by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, who spearheaded the effort, Agence France-Presse reported.

The letter was signed by nine members of Congress.

"As lawmakers, we must assure the people of America that our nation will not experience the nightmare of the 2000 presidential election," Johnson said in the letter, according to AFP.

"This is the first step in making sure that history does not repeat itself," she added.

The Congress members, including four blacks and one Hispanic, pointed to a controversial report by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights which "found that the electoral process in Florida resulted in the denial of the right to vote for countless persons."

The bipartisan commission, they said, determined "that the 'disenfranchisement of Florida's voters fell most harshly on the shoulders of black voters' and in poor counties."

The letter said the commission also determined that "despite promised nationwide reforms [of the voting system] ... adequate steps have not been taken to ensure that a similar situation will not arise in 2004 that arose in 2000."

The Nov. 7, 2000, election was decided 36 days later when the U.S. Supreme Court made two rulings that stopped Democratic challenger Al Gore's attempt to recount the Florida votes. A number of independent investigations confirmed President Bush won the state's 25 electoral votes, giving him a total of 271 to Gore's 267.

Tom Kilgannon, president of Freedom Alliance, a group dedicated to protecting American sovereignty, admonished Johnson and her colleagues.

"Your appeal to the secretary general is alarming and embarrassing," he said. "As a Member of Congress sworn to uphold the Constitution and represent the people of the United States, it is disturbing, to say the least, that you would entrust the most sacred act of American democracy - our presidential election - to an international institution, which is unaccountable to the American people and mired by scandal and corruption."

Kilgannon said the request "undermines U.S. sovereignty, demoralizes American servicemen who are fighting to build democratic governments abroad and sends the message worldwide that the United States is nothing more than a Third World nation unable to police itself."

Comment: Eh...yeah, that's exactly the case Mr Klingon, the United States is nothing more than a joke, a farce of a democracy. Someone really does need to step in and resolve the massive corruption and cronyism that oils the wheels of the American political system. It is right wing fascists just like you, Mr Klingon, that should be the first to be indicted and thrown into jail.

Note in the above, dear American readers, that no steps have been taken to fix the irregularities that lead to Bush stealing the 2000 election. Will you all vote this year? Will it be a worthwhile endeavor to take the time to go to your local polling station and cast your vote, safe in the knowledge that it has already been decided who will win, and your electronic ballot paper will be flushed down the cyber commode? Will you feel "free" knowing that, while the actual act of voting is a farce, you can still actually go through the motions, and thats what "American freedom" is about after all - appearances only - right?

Ahhh, democracy, and not only democracy, but democracy in "the greatest democracy on earth", you really do have to love it. So while you all sink the buds and wave the flags tomorrow, spare, if you can bear it, a little of your celebratory fervor for the fact that you live in a country that stands uncontested in its position as probably the greatest experiment in mass duping of a population that this world has ever known. And y'all are it.

Six People Die at Kan. Workplace Shooting

By BILL DRAPER, Associated Press Writer
July 3, 2004

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A sixth person shot in a rampage at a meatpacking plant died Saturday, and investigators said they still have not determined the gunman's motive.

Authorities identified the shooter as Elijah Brown, 21, of Kansas City, Kan., who was hired at the ConAgra Foods Inc. plant in September 2003, laid off because of production downturns, and then called back to work a few months ago.

Five people died at the plant Friday, including Brown, who killed himself. The sixth died overnight at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital, police said. [...]

Two workers were wounded. Miller identified them as Juan Ramirez, 44, of Kansas City, Kan.; and Victor Coggs, whose age and hometown were not immediately available.

The ConAgra Foods Inc. workers were on break at 5 p.m. Friday when the 10-minute rampage began. More than one weapon was used, Deputy Police Chief Sam Breshears said.

Plant employee Andre Porter, who encountered the gunman right after hearing the first shot, said the shooter had a conflict with some of the workers earlier in the week, but did not describe the conflict.

Porter, 38, said he was in the men's locker room when he heard a shot. He said he then saw the shooter and asked, "What are you doing ... shooting fireworks?"

He said the gunman glanced at him, then sprinted out of the locker room. Porter said that's when he noticed the man was carrying a handgun and saw a co-worker lying motionless in the hallway. Shortly after, he heard 10 to 12 shots fired rapidly in the nearby cafeteria.

Porter said he alerted other workers to stay put or get out of the building.

Employees were kept at the plant for hours for interviews with police while friends and family gathered outside, waiting for word.

"Everybody out here is trying to find out if their loved one is a victim or a survivor," said Robert Thompson, whose wife was inside when the shooting took place. Thompson later learned his wife was OK.

The ConAgra plant is in an industrial section of the city, about four miles southwest of downtown Kansas City, Mo. Workers there process and slice meat for deli and sandwich products, company spokesman Bob McKeon said.

ConAgra is working with police in the investigation, but had no other details, McKeon said in a telephone interview from Omaha, Neb., where the company has headquarters.

The plant, which operates 24 hours a day, was to remain closed indefinitely while the shooting was being investigated, she said.

The shooting came a year and a day after an employee of a manufacturing plant in Jefferson City, Mo., shot eight people, three fatally, before killing himself in front of the city's police headquarters.

US poll forecasts victory of Chavez in referendum

www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-03 10:32:29

CARACAS, July 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will win the recall referendum on his rule in August, said a US poll published by the local daily El Universal on Friday.

The poll, conducted on June 12-17 by the Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research Inc., showed that 49 percent of the registered Venezuelan voters will favor retaining Chavez in office, compared with 44 percent who will vote to oust him in the Aug. 15 referendum.

The "core voters" on both sides tied at 48 percent, said the Washington-based polling firm.

The survey of 1,200 people had a margin of error of 3 percent.

China to Target Mobile Phone Messaging

By ELAINE KURTENBACH, AP Business Writer
Fri Jul 2, 4:53 PM ET

SHANGHAI, China - Chinese authorities plan to use new technology to improve surveillance of mobile phone messages amid efforts to intensify policing of private communications, reports said Friday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the campaign was aimed at cleaning up "pornographic, obscene and fraudulent" phone messages that have "infiltrated short messaging content."

According to the Paris-based group Reporters Without Borders, the campaign also aims to widen surveillance of political dissent.

Beijing already screens e-mail, censors Internet chatrooms and blocks access to foreign Web sites considered subversive. But mobile phone messaging — known as short-message service, or SMS — is a newer technology, and the government has struggled to develop ways to control it.

Reporters Without Borders issued a statement protesting news that a Chinese company, Venus Info Tech Ltd., was authorized by Beijing to sell a "realtime surveillance system" for SMS messages.

The technology uses filtering algorithms created by the government-run Chinese Academy of Sciences to identify key words and combinations of words that might be associated with political rumors and "reactionary remarks," the group said.

The new surveillance systems can automatically alert police and keep records of suspect messages, it said.

The Xinhua report did not directly mention politically unacceptable messages but noted that violent text messages or those that could "harm economic interests" were also cause for concern.

It said providers of phone and Internet services were expected to participate on a basis of "self-discipline." [...]

Why Is Israel So Concerned About Earthquakes?

Jewish State Taking Earthquake Preparedness Measures

By Michael Goodspeed

Over the last several weeks, the Israeli government has seemed particularly concerned about the threat of large scale earthquakes.

On June 14th, Israel tested a new "earthquake measuring device" by setting off a 28-ton explosion that registered 2.9 on the richter scale. The test was done in the Negev deser near the border with Jordan. (Source)

On July 1st, 2004, The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles reported that Professor Vladimir Kellis-Borok, a UCLA seismologist who has achieved notoriety in California for his ability to forecast earthquakes, is actively seeking to provide his services to the Israeli government. The JJOGL writes, "Keilis-Borok is convinced that Israeli seismologists, geophysicists and mathematicians have the Yiddishe kop (Jewish brains) to build on his method and warn their country and the surrounding Arab nations of impending major quakes. He urges his Israeli colleagues to shrei gevalt (scream for help) to persuade their government to fund their work." (Source)

While earthquakes are not rare in the area, the last major one to strike in 1927, near Jericho in the West Bank, measuring 6.3 on the richter scale. The quake killed more than 200 people.

It is perhaps worth noting that another country to be taking earthquake preparedness measures is Delhi, which announced on June 20th its plan to draw up "earthquake vulnerability maps."

It is also worth noting that earthquakes around the globe have made news headlines numerous times over the last 3 weeks.

A list of the most significant activity:

June 12th, 2004, Russia: 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

June 14th, 2004, Mexico City: 5.8 magnitude earthquake.

June 15th, 2004, Chile: 6.1 magnitude earthquake.

June 15th, 2004, San Diego: 5.2 magnitude earthquake.

June 21st, 2004 Japan
: 5.1 magnitude earthquake.

June 27 th, 2004, Alaska: 6.7 magnitude earthquake.

June 27th, 2004, Chicago, IL: 4.5 magnitude earthquake.

June 25th-June 30th, Lakeview, OR: was struck with a total of 15 earthquakes, 6 of which were strong enough to be listed as "felt." The strongest quake was a 4.4 which struck on June 30th.

July 1st, 2004, Turkey: 5.1 magnitide earthquake struck remote villages in eastern Turkey, killing 18 and injuring 27.

July 2nd, 2004, Philippines: 4.1 magnitude earthquake.

Additionally, as pointed out by a reader of the Surfing the Apocalypse website, media in Iran reported that on June 29th, 2004, a quaked measured at 6.2 by the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, CO, killed over 25 people, and injured 400. Later estimates by the USGS put the quake at only 4.8.

Looking at this recent seismic activity, one can only wonder if Israel is now taking extra earthquake preparedness measures...because they know something we do not.

Fireworks Banned in Bone-Dry West

By ANGIE WAGNER, Associated Press Writer
July 3, 2004

Extreme drought and wildfire risks across the West are taking the kaboom out of some backyard Fourth of July celebrations, with communities restricting or banning the sale and use of fireworks.

But officials say Independence Day need not be boomless. Instead, they are encouraging people to watch large municipal fireworks displays.

Santa Fe, N.M., banned the use of fireworks and asked stores to voluntarily stop selling them. All complied. The city fireworks show is still scheduled. [...]

Fire risk prompted Albuquerque, N.M., to ban fireworks from wildland areas in the city. Cedar City, Utah, residents are only allowed to ignite fireworks in the parking lots of a park and two high schools.

Meanwhile, the anticipated influx of people into campgrounds and national forests on the holiday weekend is stirring anxiety among land managers.

"We are concerned about the Fourth of July weekend, because of campers and fireworks. We always have a bunch of grassfires and stuff from that," said David Widmark, spokesman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center in Portland, Ore.

In Las Vegas, police planned to stop vehicles heading to Mount Charleston this weekend to make sure fireworks aren't brought into the popular recreation area, part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. [...]

Spanish heatwave claims fifth victim

Fri Jul 2, 1:46 PM ET

MADRID (AFP) - A 53-year-old woman died of heat exhaustion in southern Spain, becoming the fifth victim of the soaring temperatures that have gripped the country for the past week, health officials said.

The woman died in hospital overnight Thursday in Jerez de la Frontera, in the southern region of Andalucia, where two men, aged 40 and 72, died earlier this week as a result of the heat.

Five deaths have now been blamed on the heatwave in Spain, where exceptionally hot weather killed at least 141 people last year.

Some 15 people remained hospitalized for heat exhaustion across the country.

But the worst appeared to be over on Friday as temperatures started to fall back towards normal seasonal levels, allowing Spanish authorities to lift a nationwide state of alert. [...]

And Finally...

More "Cosmic Spam?"

Please note that the writer of the following is not a native English speaker. Also note that we offer it with the caveat that it sure sounds like bunkum to us: a bit of truth and a lot of nonsense. What's scary is that this is making the rounds among some semi-scientific circles... Note particularly that the writer seems to advocate the "ETs as "good guys" hypothesis and that they will smack us only because they "love us." Yeah, right.

Will The "Doomsday Asteroid" Toutatis Exterminate Earth Civilization In 2004?

Constantin I. Ivanenko, Ph. D. Independent Inner Space explorer
Founder of Russian Initiative Group for the Defence of Earth
St Petersburg, RUSSIA Via Email

(Hidden exopolitical background of Cosmic Threat)

As there is fast approaching 29 September 2004: calculated by astronomers more than a decade ago fateful moment of most close during entire century approach to Earth of "doomsday asteroid 4179" Toutatis (named by its influenced by ‘mystic apprehensions’ discoverers after dreaded God of Death of ancient Celts), there is activated discussion between informed members of Global Leading Edge community what this approach does portend to inhabitants of Earth.

In Russia there exists an influential group of "politically active Inner Space explorers" (called "The Internal Predictor of Russia", allegedly supported by certain government agencies) which is seriously concerned about possible results of this approach; - which might, in their opinion, bring global-scale disaster similar to that which had destroyed remains of Atlantis about 11 500 years ago.

This opinion is shared by a group of scientifically advanced opponents of unlimited spreading of technologies for production of "free energy" (especially of "free vacuum energy"); - which are basing their arguments on data extracted by numerous explorers of Akashic Archives: such as E. Cayce & various authors mentioned by Sh. Andrews in her book "Atlantis: Insights from a Lost Civilization" from ‘Akashic Archives’ of past Atlantean supercivilization.

(However, - as believe competent Russian Inner Space explorers, - most valuable data were obtained in ‘30s-‘40s in Nazi Germany by large highly disciplined & trained team of Ahnenerbe psychics; - which got direct order of Himmler to put as much efforts as possible into psi-investigation of Atlantean technologies of "ultimate extermination".)

According to their version, final destruction of (situated in the region of present Bermuda Triangle) Atlantean metropolis, - which happened about 11 500 years ago, - was brought about by precisely aimed strike of medium-sized "killer asteroid"; - which had been directed at its target by antigravity drives (upgraded variants of Podkletnov’s disk) of battleships of Galactic Spacefleet, which were stationed around Earth.

(Thus data of astronomical calculations made on basis of laws of "conventional" Celestial Mechanics, - which demonstrate that Toutatis, during its coming approach, will pass at a considerable distance (about 1 million of miles) away from Earth, - may be not relevant in this case; - because Toutatis’ trajectory could be "corrected" by ETs - at such moment when it’ll be already too late to repel it with the help of nuclear missiles or using other methods requiring considerable preparation time.

Besides, use of, eg, controlled from Earth via radiochannels nuclear missiles for defelection of asteroids’ trajectories, - as proposed E. Teller, - might be conterproductive in case of "ET- guided killer asteroids"; - as such missiles could be intercepted by highly technologically advanced ET operators – and directed back to Earth - as it happened with some of Mars probes.)

Destruction of Atlantis hadn’t been an act of unprovoked wanton cruelty (says "official version", received by Russian contactees during seances of mental communications with ETs): this drastic action was undertaken (like US intervention into Iraq) only after numerous warnings & ultimatums; - which demanded Atlantean government to stop unauthorized by Galactic experts research in area of vacuum energies (cf. "Iraqi WMD research"!).

As said Galactic Ultimatum, "in absence of proper precautions – which could be based only on profound theoretical knowledge about Structure of Universe (which Atlantean scientists did not possess, in opinion of Galactic experts) – blind clumsy tamperings with powers of Cosmic Magnitude could bring disaster of Universal scale, damaging protective armour of vacuum which protects fragile body of physical Universe from unimaginable fury of Cosmic Fire".

Regretfully, weak government of decaying Atlantean Empire could not resist concentrated pressure of "populistically oriented partisans of unlimited energy"; – whose tempting (as proposals of con men) slogans of the type: "Unlimited Energy of Space for (limitlessly multiplying: T. Malthus/G. Hardin) starving masses!" were enthusiastically supported by uneducated massess, organically incapable to foresee long-term consequences of such decisions. (Russian "ET climate expert" Dr Karnaukhov says that these "partisans of unlimited energy" were abetted & secretly guided by ‘Luciferites’: descendants of fugitives from Venus; - which had been transformed into incandescent hell by careless experiments with "free energy" of its former ‘less than truly intelligent’ inhabitants – which, in spite of their technological achievements, lacked common prudency.)

As writes an eminent American climatologist A. Bates in his publ. in ’90 popular book "Climate in Crisis" (with Foreword by Al Gore, Dr Bates’ school friend), this situation is being repeated now with striking similarity.

Thus, - with much regret, as They dislike very much to use physical violence (or at least such is Their official position: cf. official position of US Government Re Iraq), - Representatives of Galactic Government were forced to take recourse to "ultimate arguments" in order to save Earth & Universe from "terrible consequences of reckless actions inspired by aggressive ignorance".

"A loving parent might slap a child playing with hand grenade, when there isn’t enough time to act gently" – thus was explained this ancient drama in psi-messages of "Public Representatives of Galactic Government" to Russian ET contactees.

(As a proof of Their basically good intentions Galactic Messengers named the fact that Their spaceships on sentry duty around Earth had no special armaments; - so use of antigravity generators of spacecraft engines for aiming of "killer asteroid" was an ad hoc/last moment improvisation.

Schematic drawings of disk-based antigravity generators which formed key components of engines of Galactic spacecraft are presented on Figs. 22 & 23 of "Two-Thirds" by D. Percy & D. Myers; Aulif Publ., London, 1993.

It’s easy to see similarity of these ET devices to widely publicized after 1999, - see, eg, in publ in 2000 "Hunr for Zero Point" by N. Cook & an article "Going Up" by D. Cohen in 12 Jan 2002 issue of "New Scientist", - disk-based "antigravity generator" of Russian inventor Dr. E. Podkletnov; - which is regarded by experts of US NASA as a possible prototype of drives of interstellar spaceships of the Future.)

Already in ’96 in St Petersburg Leading Edge magazine "Terminator" there was published my proposition to organize in 2004: "the Year of Advent of Hell on Earth", as say Prophecies of The Great Pyramid (see, eg, in J. Michell’s "A new View over Atlantis" & other sources) Global Internet-based Meditation for the Defence of Earth from Space Threat.

This Meditation will allow to increase the level of inner coherency of Global Psi-Field; - transforming it into an "active psychotronic shield of Earth Defence", - impenetrable both to "gross physical" (such as asteroid strike) & "subtle level" (such as chaotic turbulent energies of ‘Photon Belt of Pleiades’) attacks.

(In published in ‘30s works of Russian Spiritual teachers N. & H. Roerich and G. Gurdjiev it was said that similar techniques of Defence of Earth from frequent then attacks of "space pirates" were used by ancient global supercivilization whose metropolis was situated in then free from ice Antarctica.

Using ‘Energy of Big Bang’, - which this advanced civilization could extract through ‘South Polar hypertunnel/Time Machine’, - they could transform near-Earth vacuum into a kind of impenetrable ‘vacuum chain mail’: cf. picture on p. 76 of Feb. ’94 issue of "Scientific American".

Also, this energy could be concentrated into sharply focussed psychokinetic ray of irresistible power, capable to repel even most heavily armed spaceships of cosmic aggressors.)

In this connection it might be instructive to mention here data of psychics which are investigating the history of extermination of Martian civilization. Majority of explorers of Akashic Archives of Solar System agree that it was destroyed by a frontal hit of large asteroid, which tore away in a few seconds Martian atmosphere. Russian psychics say that this "killer asteroid", - which had been teleported via hyperspace by professional team of "ET planet killers", - has emerged into "conventional space" in front of Mars just a few fractions of second before impact.

Because of this possessing advanced enough defensive technologies Martians, - which, however, hadn’t yet established reliable enough "Predictor Service", capable to warn them timely about coming threats, - were unable to take necessary measures of self-protection.

Collating data presented in abovementioned "Two-Thirds" & "The Montauk Project" by P. Nichols & P. Moon (Sky Books, 1992), it’s possible to conclude that Martians tried (and almost succeeded – before they were exterminated) to instal inside The Great 5-sided Martian Pyramid (called ‘The Tor’ in "Two-Thirds") so-called ‘Aspis Crystal’; - whose purpose was to defend entire Solar System from unauthorized interventions from outside through altering of ‘crystal lattice of vacuum’ – which’ll become impenetrable to ‘enemy spacecraft’.

(As was demonstrated on abovementioned picture from "Sci. Am.", this crystal lattice has "multispiral" structure resembling that of quartz – or of created with the help of advanced ET nanotechnologies "magic crystal" mentioned in SF novel of f. DIA officer M. Caidin "Dark Messiah").

As guess Russian explorers of history of Martian civilization, Martians’ efforts to realize this project had provoked their extermination; - as "kangaroo court" of said space pirates (which called itself by nobly sounding title of "Government of Galactic Federation") naturally was against this.

Here may be drawn parallels with (unsuccessful, in this case) attempts of British government in 18th century (and later) to thwart gaining of independence by British colonies in America.

In ‘80s Spiritual Guru of Pentagon Meditation Club the late Swami Satchidananda put forward the plan of Spiritual Defence Initiative, based on creation, – with the help of Global Meditation, - of impenetrable "shield of Spiritual Defence" around entire Earth; - which could prevent attacks of both inner & outer Enemies of Earth, - repelling both nuclear missiles launched by "rogue states" & "killer asteroids" directed by space aggressors.

Such Meditations of Global Defence may be organized, using "Internet-upgraded variant" of developed in ‘70s by Russian defence-oriented psi-explorers computer-aided technique of precise intersynchronization of psi-fields of crews of naval & spaceships.

(Such intersynchronization, - allowing to form "group mind" of ships’ crews, - helped to increase survival abilities of these ships in emergency/battle situations; - increasing efficiency of crewmembers’ teamwork & raising the level of captain’s precognitive ability.)

Dr Sergeyev: director of Special Advanced Research Group of f. Soviet Navy which had developed these techniques, used in his work research materials of an eminent Russian Inner Space explorer Dr. Barchenko: director of opened in ’25 first in the world government-sponsored psi-research lab; - who had developed, already in ‘20s-‘30s, efficient designs of collective meditations, - whose purpose was establishing of psi-contact with Ascended Masters of Shamballa & advanced cosmic civilizations.

(Hints about these designs - also used by members of Dr Sergeyev’s group - can be found in books of Roerichs’ Teachings. It’s said that Dr Barchenko was ‘telepathically assisted’ in his work by Masters of Shamballa: Spiritual Capital of Earth; - which was called in books of Roerichs "military camp of armed Defenders of Earth".)

After beginning of "perestroika", - when heretofore top secret materials of Dr Sergeyev’s research were partially declassified, - he addressed to his colleagues in other countries (which were aware of his work thanks to ‘70s "international psychotronic bestseller": known to all members of global psi-research community book of S. Ostrander & L. Schroeder "Psychic Discoveries behind The Iron Curtain") with proposition to use developed by his group collective computer-aided ESP training technologies for fast training of entire human crew of endangered Spaceship Earth in difficult but necessary art of Defence of our Common Global Home.
