A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.

The comments by Khalil al-Hayya in an interview Wednesday came amid a stalemate in months of talks for a cease-fire in Gaza. The suggestion that Hamas would disarm appeared to be a significant concession by the militant group officially committed to Israel's destruction.

But it's unlikely Israel would consider such a scenario. It has vowed to crush Hamas following the deadly Oct. 7 attacks that triggered the war, and its current leadership is adamantly opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war.

We all remember the harrowing "Look them in the eyes" (LTITE) messaging campaign of early 2021, aimed at levering compliance with Covid restrictions. By means of a series of videos and posters, we were confronted with close-up images of acutely unwell patients in intensive care units, ominous music and a voiceover beseeching us to tell them, nose-to-nose, that we never break the rules. Deploying materials that were heavily infused with behavioural science strategies ('nudges'), frightening and shaming an already overly scared population into obedience, this advertising initiative was widely considered to be the most controversial - and unethical - of all the public health communications during the Covid event.

But who were the key actors responsible for inflicting the LTITE campaign on the populace?

A major interstate highway remained closed Saturday and dozens of properties were under evacuation orders after a freight train derailment in New Mexico, near the state line with Arizona.

The train's cars were carrying gasoline and propane when it derailed around 11:45 a.m. local time Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 13 miles west of Gallup, N.M., closing Interstate 40 to westbound traffic, the state's department of transportation confirmed in a Facebook post. Authorities also said the site is being treated as a hazardous materials response, contributing to the local evacuation orders.

The train was operated by BNSF Railway, according to the Apache County Sheriff's Office. The Arizona Department of Public Safety later confirmed BNSF's ownership.

The Texas-based operator is the largest freight railway in the United States.

In March 2023, BMJ published an article by professors Stephen Reicher, John Drury, Susan Michie and Robert West entitled 'The UK government's attempt to frighten people into covid protective behaviours was at odds with its scientific advice'. You will note in the declaration of competing interests that they were all government scientific advisors. All four sat on SPI-B (the UK government's Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behaviours) and two were also part of 'Indie SAGE'.

In essence, the article claims that the idea of using fear to induce compliance with lockdown and NPIs did not come from the government conspiring with behavioural scientists in SPI-B, but rather from ignoring them. Not only that, they say fear is an ineffective way to persuade people engage in 'health protective behaviours'.

This article stuck in the craw, after the extensive research I had undertaken for my book A State of Fear: How the UK government weaponised fear during the Covid-19 pandemic. I don't deny the government's own agency in using fear but to deny it was at odds with official scientific advice is patently untrue.

The article opens with the shocking leaked government Whatsapp messages in which the former Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock openly proposed using fear — 'we must frighten the pants off everyone with the new strain' — and Cabinet Secretary Simon Case agreed that 'the fear/guilt factor vital', offering lurid insight into their base and disrespectful attitude towards the British people.

Pro-Palestinian protests sweeping across university campuses in the US are anti-Semitic and must be stopped, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said, claiming that mobs have been attacking Jewish students and faculty members.

His comments come after US police arrested more than 80 protesters on Wednesday in a crackdown on the pro-Palestine demonstrations taking place at some 21 universities in states like Massachusetts, California and New York, among others.

The students have been demanding that the US government cease all funding for the Israeli military and "stop giving them any more money to continue this genocide," referring to the ongoing Israeli offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza.

In a video published on his X account on Wednesday, Netanyahu said that the protests on America's college campuses are "horrific" and claimed:

"Anti-Semitic mobs have taken over leading universities and are calling for the annihilation of Israel. This is reminiscent of what happened in German universities in the 1930s. It's unconscionable. It has to be stopped. It has to be condemned and condemned unequivocally."

More than 50 arrested after state police storm protestors at University of Texas at Austin.

Today, FIRE sent a letter to Jay Hartzell, president of the University of Texas at Austin, in response to the disturbing display of force and free speech violations that occurred on UT Austin's campus yesterday afternoon.

A group called the Palestinian Solidarity Committee of Austin planned to stage a "Popular University for Gaza" walk-out just before noon on April 24. Their plan, which the committee announced the day before, was to march to the campus' South Lawn, where teach-ins, study breaks, pizza, and an art workshop would take place along with a talk from a guest speaker.

However, at the request of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the university, the protestors were met with a phalanx of law enforcement officers — including campus police and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers — who proceeded to order the protestors to disperse. This led to more than 50 arrests and countless violations of student and faculty free speech rights — including a photojournalist with a local Fox affiliate station whom officers tackled to the ground before imposing trespassing charges.

Crews responded to the Roswell Air Center to fight a large fire on Thursday night.

According to the Roswell Fire Department, the fire was reported Thursday afternoon on a building that was leased by a business on the east side of the Roswell Air Center near a city water tower.

Fire officials say the fire was "burning itself out" after it burned through chemicals in the building. There is no word on what chemicals were on fire.

Last week I travelled to Brussels to attend the National Conservatism Conference. I was slated to speak on a panel on "The Future of Conservatism." Whether the panel would actually happen seemed in doubt for much of the time I was there, since the city's socialist authorities — working in tandem with their local extreme-left paramilitaries — came very close to successfully shutting down the conference. TAMPA, Fla. — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Services is offering a $20,000 reward for information after a dolphin was found shot to death on a beach last month.

The juvenile bottlenose dolphin was found with "multiple bullets" in its "brain, spinal cord, and heart" on West Mae's Beach in Cameron Parish, Louisiana on March 13.

A necropsy confirmed the dolphin appeared to have died from trauma that happened "at or near the time of death," NOAA said.
