The first major snowstorm of the season came in force overnight Sunday, battering the mountains with heavy, wet snow that clogged traffic, cancelled school and left more than 10,000 high country homes without power into Monday morning.

Simultaneous closures at major choke points on Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel and Vail Pass left drivers marooned in Georgetown and at a shelter in Vail, which soon filled to capacity.

"It's been a long morning," said Colorado State Patrol Sergeant Patrick Williams. "Welcome to winter, right?"

Despite the mayhem and lengthy mop-up efforts, which started to wrap up at around 9:30 a.m., Williams said he was not aware of any serious injury or fatality crashes in the Summit County or Vail Pass area.

Britannia Yacht Club recorded wind gust of about 160 km/h at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday

A rapidly moving column of sinking air called a microburst is likely to blame for the damage caused when a powerful storm moved through the National Capital Region Wednesday afternoon, Environment Canada says.

The Britannia Yacht Club on the Ottawa River recorded a wind gust of about 160 km/h at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday, the weather agency said in a French-language notice posted on its website Friday. Staff at the club confirmed the reading to CBC Thursday.

Winds moving that fast are consistent with F1 tornadoes, but microbursts can also cause winds at speeds of more than 100 km/h.

Damage was spread over an area stretching about seven kilometres, Environment Canada said, adding that the data contained in its notice is preliminary and doesn't constitute a final report.

Wild Care staff is working to save a rare tropical seabird found Tuesday at LeCount Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, after it was apparently blown ashore by Tropical Storm Jose, according to a statement from the wildlife rehabilitation hospital.

Wild Care received a call about what was originally believed to be an injured gannet at the oceanside beach but it turned out to be the first masked booby to ever touch down on Massachusetts soil, officials said.

"Much to our surprise, the bird was not a gannet, but instead was a species of booby (a tropical relative of the Northern Gannet)," Stephanie Ellis, Wild Care's executive director, said in the statement. "The bird is very thin, weak and is experiencing respiratory discomfort likely due to a fungal infection. The bird's condition is grave, but we are providing supportive care and keeping it comfortable at this time."
