'Ferocious' storm destroys large patches of forest in central Victoria, Australia

Storm damage in Bullarto, central Victoria.
A week after ferocious winds damaged swathes of forest in central Victoria some locals are saying it is the worst storm damage they have ever experienced.

Resident Lily Langham said in the 35 years she had lived near Daylesford she had never seen anything like it.

"It looked like a logging coup," she said.

After driving through forest south of Daylesford to survey the damage, she said the one positive was hearing birds had returned to the forest.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Dr Blair Trewin said last week's storm was on a scale not seen in many decades.

The wild weather was highly unusual because of the wind direction and length of time such high winds lasted, Dr Trewin said.

"There's been 25 other times in the last 20 years when there have been wind gusts over 100km an hour [at Kilmore]," he said.

"But there's only been one case out of those 25 where winds have come from a similar direction to what they did this time."

Bhutan

Jammu's farmers distraught as unseasonal hailstorms destroy crops
"Every time we go out for hoeing the maize saplings, the rain and hailstorms start. Till now, our net sown area of around 5 kanals of land has been devastated by unseasonal hailstorms four times," said an anxious-looking Guddo Devi.

The 26-year-old was preparing the firewood to make dinner for her three children while speaking about the calamity. She lives in the remote Pounsa hamlet in the Chenani Tehsil of Jammu's Udhampur district, and like her, many farmers in the surrounding areas of Udhampur have lost their crops to hailstorms.

In these winter zones, farmers often cultivate only one crop a year in the autumn, and this loss has left them anxious about surviving the cold months ahead.

Usually, it does not hail in Jammu in June! This year, however, unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms have wreaked havoc in the region by damaging standing crops in hundreds of kanals (1 kanal is equal to 0.125 acres) in the winter areas of Udhampur district.

Record rain brings floods to Morgantown, West Virginia

floods
Sunday's rain didn't just bring flooding to the area's roads and basements, it set a new date record for most rainfall recorded at the Morgantown airport.

"It was very heavy and very localized, " Chris Leonardi, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said of Sunday's storm.

The sensor at the Morgantown airport recorded 1.92 inches of rain, surpassing the previous date record of 1.42 inches in 1951, Leonardi said.

There are radar indications that parts of eastern Monongalia County, into Preston County, got as much as 5 inches of rain, he said.

While 1.92 inches of rain would cause flooding anyway, the ground was already saturated from rain the previous week, Leonardi said. It also didn't help that Sunday's storm was slow-moving.
