Triple tropical trouble: Douglas, Gonzalo and Tropical Depression 8 threaten US, Caribbean

The forecast track of Hurricane Douglas shows the system moving over the Hawaiian Islands by the weekend.

The tropics are heating up as three separate systems are threatening havoc in the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Douglas in the Pacific Ocean threatens the Hawaiian Islands. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Eight is spinning about 415 miles from Port O'Connor, Texas. And in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Gonzalo is expected to become a hurricane Friday as it moves west toward the Windward Islands of the Caribbean.

While 2020 has been crushing records for earliest named storms in the Atlantic, including Cristobal, Edouard, Fay and Gonzalo, hurricane experts noted that the storms so far have been weak and short-lived.

Six tornadoes have been confirmed by the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) out of Western University in London, including one near Stratford.

An EF1 tornado caused damage to a farm and trees in Gads Hill with a max wind gust of 150km/h, a path length of 4.2 kilometers and width of 400 metres.

The NTP survey team also found EF0 downburst damage south of Stratford with a path length of 18 kilometres and max winds of 115km/h. An EF0 downburst was also confirmed in the Palmerston - Arthur area. That downburst had a path length of 53 kilometres and max wind of 120 km/h.

The NTP also confirmed an EF1 tornado in Beachville, near Woodstock from the July 19 storms. The EF1 damage was done to trees, with max winds of 150 km/h.

A breathtaking video taken during Wednesday's thunderstorm shows the moment lightning strikes behind the Statue of Liberty.

The 21-second clip posted to Twitter shows dark grey clouds hanging above Lady Liberty, with a massive strike disappearing behind her pedestal. The scene was filmed from a dock on Ellis Island.

An intense thunderstorm with heavy winds rolled through the Big Apple Wednesday afternoon, with the National Weather Service issuing a severe threat for the city and the Lower Hudson Valley between 5 and 9 p.m.

Meteorologists warned the Post of potential for weak tornadoes and widespread flooding in the city before the rain begins to let up around 10 p.m.

Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rainfall is expected in the city, though as much as 2 inches of rain could drop across the area depending on how fast the system passes overhead.

South Asia floods displace 9.6 million people, kill 550

More than 9.6 million people across South Asia have been affected by severe floods, with hundreds of thousands struggling to get food and medicine, officials and aid organizations said Wednesday.

About 550 people have died in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, while millions have been displaced from their homes since the flooding began last month, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or IFRC.

The organization warned of a humanitarian crisis, saying that close to one third of Bangladesh has already been flooded, with more flooding expected in the coming weeks. It said that 2.8 million people have been affected, and that more than 1 million are isolated.

Lightning strikes continue to kill people in India's eastern state of Bihar as floods have affected over 400,000 people in eight districts, officials said on Wednesday.

According to officials at Bihar disaster management department, 18 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours due to lightning strikes in nine districts of the state.

The deaths have taken place in Banka, Jamui, Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Jehanabad, Lakhisarai and East Champaran.

"Six people were killed in Banka district, three each in Jamui and Nalanda, and one each in Nawada, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Jehanabad, Lakhisarai and East Champaran districts," an official at Bihar disaster management department said.

Comment: Also on July 21, lightning strikes killed at least 8 in Birbhum, West Bengal.

Lightning strikes 4 as violent storms hammer St. Louis

As violent thunderstorms rattled south St. Louis, Missouri, on Sunday night, four people in the city were struck by lightning.

At 9:35 p.m. on Sunday, the St. Louis Fire Department released information regarding the lightning strikes on social media. The department reported that the four victims -- all of whom were men -- were transported by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and one was in critical condition.

"Thunderstorms with a tremendous amount of cloud-to-ground lightning affected Greater St. Louis Sunday evening," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said.

Three nomads and hundreds of animals killed by lightning strike in Surankote, India

Three nomads were killed while dozens of their cattle got perished by the lightning at Gumsar village of Poonch district.

Officials told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the incident took place in the intervening night of Monday- Tuesday.

They said the lightning hit a seasonal dhok in Gumsar, leaving three nomads dead on the spot who belong to Surankote area of the district.

They added that many animals including goat and sheep, whose number is believed to be in several hundreds, also got perished in the incident.

Sub Divisional Magistrate Surankote, Saleem Qureshi said that teams are rushing to the spot to assess the loss.

Comment: A lightning bolt also killed 16 goats in Pakistan on July 20.

10 killed in lightning strikes in Bihar, India - 160 such deaths in 3 weeks for the state

Ten people were killed after being struck by lightning in Bihar on Sunday and heavy rains inundated low-lying areas in Delhi, with a man drowning while trying to maneuver his truck through a waterlogged underpass.

In Assam, the death toll in flood-related incidents increased to 84 after five more fatalities were reported, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaking to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on the flood situation in the state.

The total number of people losing their lives in flood and landslides in Assam this year is 110.

While 84 died in flood-related incidents, landslides claimed 26 lives.

Floods have affected over 25 lakh people in 24 of the 33 districts of Assam and has destroyed houses, crops, roads and bridges at several places.

Comment: On the same day 2 were killed by lightning strikes in the state of Jharkhand and 2 boys were killed by a strike on the prior day in Feni, Bangladesh.
