Snow accumulation near Readsboro, Vermont can be seen on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
Thousands of people were without power in Maine after a punishing spring storm brought snow and high winds Saturday to New England.

The frigid cold, caused by a polar vortex that blasted in from the north, set a number of records across the region, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service said unusually chilly conditions are expected to linger Sunday across the Central Plains, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast ,with freeze warnings and frost advisories in effect.

"We have another really cold morning across parts of the Northeast," Fox News chief meteorologist Rick Reichmuth said on "Fox & Friends Weekend." "It is going to get better. In fact, temps today are going to be back up into the 60s for a lot of people, so that snow that we had yesterday will be gone, but we do have one more chilly morning to get through with this."

The local weather group, Proyecto Mastral, posted some photos taken of the effects of the hailstorm pummelling parts of the Costa Blanca city early this morning.

Thunderstorms drenched Israel on Tuesday in a rare springtime downpour, with hail and flooding recorded in the south.

The storms raged from northern Israel to the Negev Desert in the south, and were expected to further raise the levels of the Sea of Galilee, which has already enjoyed a particularly rainy winter.

The rains were expected to continue Wednesday, but gradually peter off by evening.

The Israel Electric Corporation recorded 828 lightning strikes on Tuesday morning and afternoon, an unprecedented number for May, and up dramatically — by 2,748% — from May's monthly average of 30.

The Israel Water Authority on Tuesday said the last time the country saw two such rainy winters consecutively was over three decades ago, in late 1986- early 1988.

Comment: A severe hailstorm also hit parts of neighbouring Saudi Arabia on May 5.

A severe storm Tuesday night in South Carolina spawned at least two tornadoes and killed a man getting out of his car with a lightning strike.

Several severe storms moved across the northern part of the state Tuesday evening. The strongest storm spawned an EF-2 tornado with winds estimated at 115 mph (185 kph) that moved from Great Falls into western Lancaster County, the National Weather Service said.

Earlier, that storm dropped an EF-1 tornado with winds of 100 mph (160 kph) south of Chester, forecasters said.
