Storms
A record breaking low pressure system, now centred over the Aleutian Archipelago in Western Alaska, is transporting the coldest airmass on the planet from Siberia and over the Pacific Ocean. This system triggered record low temperatures in many locations across northern Japan during the last week of 2020, with Horokanai bottoming out at a bone-chilling -32.6°C and many nearby regions seeing temperatures around -30°C.
This system also brought enormous amounts of snow to Japan that has many winter sport fans around the world impressed.
The Meteorological Agency says heavy snow is falling along the Japan Sea side of the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions.
Snow has accumulated in mountainous areas and on lower ground. At 6 a.m. on Friday, there were two meters of snow in Okura Village in Yamagata Prefecture, and 141 centimeters in Uonuma City in Niigata Prefecture.
The snow is expected to continue through Sunday. More snow will likely accumulate on the plains as well.
In the western area of San Miguel de Tucumán, 105 millimeters fell between 20:05 and 21:08. The Hospital del Niño Jesús also suffered the ravages of the storm and water flooded its corridors.
The storm brought heavy rain and wind to an area devastated by Cyclone Idai nearly two years ago.
Beira, a low-lying coastal city of 500,000 people is home to Mozambique's second-largest port that serves as a gateway to landlocked countries in the region.
Residents living in the path of the tropical storm Chalane and near rivers were asked by the government to move to safer areas.

The aftermath of a blizzard in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, is shown in this recent handout photo. A Dec. 27 blizzard that saw winds reach 135 kilometres per hour tore apart cabins and ripped windshields from snowmobiles in Pangnirtung. One person was flown to a southern hospital with injuries.
That's when a record-breaking blizzard hit the Baffin Island community of about 1,500, shaking houses and crushing cabins.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says Sunday's storm brought record wind gusts and heavy snow to communities across Nunavut. In Pangnirtung, winds reached 135 km/h that day.
"It was like an all day thing. The wind was so strong," Lawlor said.
Sky Panipak, who also lives in Pangnirtung, posted a photo to Twitter of one resident's home where the front steps were torn clean from the door.
Oinatz Arretxe, 28, was left with broken bones after he was washed off a wall while jogging with colleagues in the city of Orio, Basque Country.
In the footage, two people are seen running across the pier when a huge wave suddenly crashes over them.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast wet and wild weather for the east coast of Australia with increased rainfall in Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania.
The rain has caused major headaches for those trying to travel along 64 different roads in Queensland, which have flooded from a trough which moved up from Northern NSW.
The incredible natural phenomenon was filmed by Gilad Raz in Caesarea, Israel on 17 December and it shows the waterspout swirling over the ocean, edging its way towards the coast.
The waterspout is made up of a single smaller vortex in the centre of the structure and a large hollow one that spun around it making it look even more ominous.
One user commented on the video, saying: "Multiple vortexes are not something that you see every day."
Another one said: "This is incredible!"
The recent flooding in the city occurred after torrential rain on 12 December 2020. According to Radio Okapi, the UN radio station in DR Congo, 4 people died, 2 were reported missing and 2 were seriously injured. Reports suggest many of the victims were children. Houses were damaged or destroyed in several districts of the city, particularly in northern areas where the Kavimvira river broke its banks.
Comment: Severe flooding occurred more recently in the district around the 23rd of December:
