Hundreds of lightning bolts hit dry Oregon, start 50 new wildfires

Lightning bolts struck the parched forests of southern Oregon hundreds of times in 24 hours, igniting some 50 new wildfires even as the nation's largest wildfire continued to burn less than 100 miles (161 kilometers) away, officials said on Monday.

State, federal and contracted firefighters, augmented by helicopters and planes dropping fire retardant, pounced on the new wildfires in national forests in southwest Oregon before they could spread out of control. The largest one was estimated at up to 5 acres (2 hectares).

Thunderstorms unleashed some 700 lightning bolts that hit the ground and also brought rain to some places, but left others dry while triggering multiple fires, said Margueritte Hickman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.

Firefighters and support personnel worked through the night to locate and extinguish fires.

Lightning strikes 6 people, kills 2 in Joypurhat, Bangladesh

Two farmers were killed by lightning strike on Ratanpur-Salua field in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat on Monday morning.

The deceased are Dulal Hossain, 59, and Mofazzal Hossain, 52, of Ratanpur village.

Four other farmers were seriously injured in the incident.

The police said some farmers of Ratanpur village went to plant Aman paddy around 9:00am.

A thunderbolt struck six of them, leaving two dead on the spot.

Later, local people rescued the injured.

Palash Chandra Deb, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi police station, said the injured were admitted to Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital.

3 die in lightning strike in West Bengal, India

Three persons including a couple died on Monday as lightning struck them in West Bengal's Birbhum district, police said.

They were working on an agricultural field in Santoshpur village under Nalhati police station. When it started raining, the three took shelter in an abandoned hut which was struck by lightning killing them.

Of the three deceased, Jagannath Tudu and his wife Sumi Tudu were residents of Santoshpur, while Dilu Hembram hailed from Jharkhand, police said.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.

Motorcyclist killed on I-95 due to lightning strike, police say
A motorcyclist was killed Monday night after a lightning strike caused him to lose control of his bike on I-95 South.

The victim was traveling with his brother around 5 p.m. when his brother said a nearby lightning strike caused the victim to veer into the shoulder and hit the guardrail, according to Liberty County Sheriffs Office Capt. Dennis Poulsen.

The victim flipped over the guardrail and landed on the grassy area, while the motorcycle continued to drive along the guardrail before crossing the three lanes of the interstate where it stopped.

No other vehicle was involved.

A CHP helicopter that landed near Muir Trail Ranch to retrieve the body of Nicholas Torchia, who was struck by lightning.
A 37-year-old man was struck and killed by lightning near the John Muir Trail in Fresno County on Friday afternoon.

The man was identified as Nicholas Torchia of Fresno. The Fresno County Coroner's Office determined Torchia died by electrocution caused by lightning.

Torchia was struck by lightning near Muir Trail Ranch, a remote, roadless location east of Florence Lake, while he was on the Sallie Keyes Cutoff, a short segment between the John Muir Trail and Florence Lake Trail.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office got a call about the incident around 2:20 p.m. Friday and Torchia's body was recovered around 6 p.m. once a California Highway Patrol helicopter was able to fly in during a break in the storm, sheriff's spokesman Tony Botti said.

"Torchia took cover by leaning against a tree," Botti said, "a tree which was then struck by a lightning bolt. Torchia fell to the ground. His fellow hikers came to check on him and he told them he didn't feel well and then became unconscious. A doctor and a nurse who were on the trail tended to Torchia by administering CPR for three hours. Despite their great efforts, he ultimately passed away."

More than 300 died in China floods in July

More than 300 people have been confirmed dead since record-breaking rainfall triggered flooding in central China last month.

Local authorities in Henan Province told reporters on Monday the death toll from the floods rose to 302, with 50 others still missing.

Beginning in mid-July, heavy rains fell intermittently in the city of Zhengzhou and elsewhere. Flooding occurred across the province, causing mudslides and toppling buildings.

Officials said the deluge affected more than 14 million people and caused over 17 billion dollars in economic damage.

In one of the worst months on record, over 920 people have died in floods, landslides and other rain-related incidents worldwide in July 2021.

July this year brought a seemingly endless round of flood disasters across the world. FloodList recorded 124 flood events across 385 locations in more than 20 countries during July.

Flooding caused widespread devastation in some of the worst disasters on record. Homes and livelihoods have been decimated. Tragically over 920 people have lost their lives including 219 in Belgium and western Germany in mid-July; 192 in Mumbai and Maharashtra, India, in late July 2021; 113 in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan in late July; and 99 in Henan Province, China, late July.

High deaths tolls from flooding and landslides were also reported in areas of Pakistan, Iran, Yemen, Japan, Nepal, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and several states in India including Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.

Severe flooding in Arauca Department in eastern Colombia has affected over 50,000 people since mid-July. Many of those affected are refugees from bordering Venezuela.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that heavy rains in the foothills of the plains and the upper part of the Arauca River from 11 July 2021 caused an increase in the flow levels of at least eleven rivers in the department.

Flooding damaged homes and livelihoods in rural and urban areas of the the municipalities of Saravena, Arauquita, Tame, Fortul and Arauca, and later in areas of Cravo Norte and Puerto Rondón municipalities. The departmental government reported 300,000 hectares of land was flooded. As much as 50% of rural land in the municipality of Arauca has flooded. Flooding has also damaged roads and bridges, leaving areas cut off.

A line of showers produced dozens of waterspouts over Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio, on Sunday, August 1.

This footage shows several waterspouts and dark storm clouds over Lake Erie as viewed from the Cleveland suburb of Rocky River.

A cold front was forecast to move through Cleveland on Sunday, bringing possible scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to the area, according to the National Weather Service.
