Road conditions worsen in Calgary
As much as 31 centimetres of snow fell across Calgary since Tuesday afternoon, creating commuter headaches and leaving roads and sidewalks dangerously icy.

The storm also broke the day's previous snowfall record of 11.7 cm set in 1953.

Calgary's snowfall was part of a larger system that blanketed much of southwestern Alberta in snow, with the hamlet of Beaver Mines west of Pincher Creek getting as much as 60 cm of precipitation.

A killer whale calf is believed to have died in agony after being blown ashore by the ferocious 90mph gales of Storm Caroline.

Tragic images show the young orca's body on a grassy Shetland shoreline almost three weeks after the storm hit.

The three-metre long whale is thought to have died of dehydration or been crushed by its own body weight after becoming stranded.

It was discovered by a member of the public on the west coast of Shetland's main island at least 25 metres from the shoreline

The orca was probably separated from its mother by the weather, according to the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary

Hillswick, the island's only wild animal rehabilitation centre, reported the beaching to the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme (SMAS) who have carried out a post-mortem.

If you needed proof that nothing quite manages to compare with the power of nature, one Adelaide local has provided it, capturing dazzling footage of so-called "spider lightning" over a suburban beach.

The video - shot by Adelaide man Caleb Travis and uploaded to YouTube - shows lightning illuminating the sky over Glenelg.

The lightning leaves a lasting trace as it forks and snakes across the sky, and was filmed during Monday night's thunderstorms over the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology said two lines of thunderstorms moved across Adelaide on Monday night, and more than 280,000 lightning strikes were recorded over 24 hours around the state and over coastal waters.

"We wouldn't see that very often. It was a pretty dynamic system as it moved across so it was electrically active for a long period of time," senior forecaster Vince Rowlands said.

Victorians are cleaning up after severe thunderstorms swept across the state, bringing strong winds and rain that has damaged houses and uprooted trees.

The State Emergency Service (SES) said they had received hundreds of calls for assistance after storms brewed on yesterday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds, heavy rain and large hailstones remains current for much of the state.

More than 30,000 homes properties are still without power, down from about 100,000 around the state last night.

Power was also out in parts of suburban Melbourne but the impact was far less significant.

The weather bureau's Dean Stewart said Melbourne received 20 millimetres of rain within 15 minutes, causing flash flooding in many suburbs.

"The highest wind gust in the state was up at Kilmore Gap to the north of Melbourne - 117 kilometre per hour - but a lot of towns reported gusts over 100kph, [followed by] Wangaratta with 113kph, Bendigo 111kph, Mangalore 107kph, Laverton 98kph," he said.

More than 30 people in the Philippines and have been killed and others are missing after Tropical Storm Kai-Tak drenched the country with heavy rainfall that caused flooding and landslides.

Kai-Tak, known as Urduja in the Philippines, has been crawling slowly westward over the Philippines since late last week. Eastern portions of Visayas, including Samar, have received more than 35 inches of rainfall since Dec. 13.

Sofronio Dacillo Jr., a disaster-response officer, said 26 villagers died and 23 others were missing mostly due to landslides in different areas in the island province of Biliran.

At least seven other people were killed in landslides and floods in four central areas due to Kai-tak.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said it was trying to confirm the reported deaths caused by the storm, which forced more than 89,000 people to flee to emergency shelters. Thousands of Christmas holiday travelers were stranded due to canceled inter-island ferries and flights.
