Flooding, baseball-sized hail and hurricane-force wind gusts, oh my! Yes, it was a couple of very active severe weather days July 9-10. A well-forecast upper-level disturbance deepened as it moved through a stubborn ridge in the West and into the Plains. Already working along a frontal boundary, strong thunderstorms quickly developed across Nebraska Friday, July 9, and clusters of storms continued south and east through Saturday, July 10, becoming much more isolated from Texas into the Lower Mississippi Valley July 11.

Residents around Omaha, Nebraska, saw some of the strongest winds as several reports of 75 to 90 miles per hour were sent into the Storm Prediction Center late Friday night, leading to about 200,000 customers losing power. Wind speeds that strong are equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane. Radar imagery showed an impressive and quick-moving bow echo right through town along and west of the Missouri River. Another bowing segment occurred at roughly the same time in southwest Iowa as well. More clusters provided extensive damage and strong wind gusts in central Nebraska and northeast Missouri.

Winds were not the only factor on Friday, though. Hail, some of it as large as baseballs over 3 inches in diameter, fell in a line northwest of Des Moines, Iowa, with more of the incredibly large hail scattered around Box Butte County, Nebraska, and Hancock County, Illinois.

Lightning has struck three persons dead in Afikpo, Afikpo North local government area of Ebonyi State.

The incident happened during a rainstorm during a a heavy downpour which lasted for over five hours.

The lightning struck around 3pm on Friday, it was learnt.

A resident of Afikpo, Iheukwumere Okogwu Otu, said one of the deceased was an indigene of Cross River State based in the area.

He said: "Yes, it is true that lightning killed three persons in our place. There was a heavy rainfall that day which was accompanied by serious thunderclaps.

Heavy rainfall in eastern England, UK on 09 July 2021 caused streets to flood, disrupting traffic and damaging homes and businesses.

The city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire was the worst affected. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said they responded to over 160 incidents of flooding in the space of a few hours during the evening of 09 July 2021. Around 20 elderly people were evacuated from a retirement home. Flooding also damaged a local sports stadium.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said, "Heavy rainfall has caused flash flooding in Peterborough this evening. Please do not attempt to drive through flooded roads. Bourges Boulevard area is among the areas badly affected. Roads are looking like rivers so please avoid the area until the water subsides.

Evacuation orders have been issued for 365,000 people in three of Japan's prefectures amid heavy rains in the country's south-west, the NHK broadcaster reports.

NHK said on Saturday that over 90,000 households in Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Kumamoto prefectures received evacuation orders and 236,000 people got the highest (level five), "beyond evacuation" warning.

Another 128,500 people on the island of Kyushu got urgent (level four) evacuation orders.

According to the latest forecasts, up to 200 mm of rainfall are expected on Kyushu in the coming 24 hours. Around 330 mm of rainfall were recorded in Kagoshima prefecture in the past 12 hours.

Reports of landslides and river flooding have started to come in. The NHK broadcaster cancelled all of its morning programs in order to report on the situation in the country's south-west.

Giant waterspout filmed off Singapore

Sightings of a waterspout off East Coast Park were reported by several people on social media on Saturday morning (July 10).

Ms Carrie Koh, a reader of The Straits Times, said that she saw the waterspout from her apartment in Bedok at around 7am, in the direction of Bedok Jetty, and posted a picture on social media. The waterspout lasted around 10 to 15 minutes.

Facebook user Anj Arcega Subion spotted the waterspout from her home at Riviera Residences near Upper East Coast Road at 7.03am.

While urban regions like Mumbai that are situated near water bodies are facing power cuts and road blockages due to rising water, rural Indians living near rivers are losing their lives, livelihoods, and homes.

Several villages in India's Bihar state have been flooded due to heavy monsoons, disrupting the normal lives of local people. At least 21 people have lost their lives in the rain and flood-related situation, including lightning strikes, media reported.

So far, Bihar's administration has not set up relief camps for villagers who have been compelled to leave their homes, residents have told local media.

Talking to Sputnik, police officer Rajiv Rajak of Bihar's Lauriya district said that while the flooding of river-side regions in the state is not uncommon during monsoons, this year the rains arrived early and people were unprepared.

Disaster services in Cape Town have been responding to reports of mudslides, flooding and uprooted trees as residents battened down the hatches in the face of another cold front, which hit on Thursday.

The City of Cape Town's disaster risk agencies were on high alert as more gale force winds and heavy rain lashed the city.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said all agencies were ready to deal with any impact brought on by the adverse weather conditions.
"We appeal to residents to help reduce flood risk by clearing out drainage systems, raising the floor level of a structure so that it is higher than the natural ground level, making sandbags and digging trenches around the house to divert water away."

Multiple parts of China have been hit by floods and mudslides after a round of torrential rains hit the country in early July 2021.

In southwestern Sichuan province, a major mudslide damaged homes and killed livestock, sparking the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents.

China has been on high alert since severe floodings hit the region in 2020, with flood-response and rescue drills carried out ahead of the May rainy season.
