More than 2.24 million lightning strikes were recorded across Australia in the past 48 hours to Monday morning, October 26, 2020.

Australia has been hit by more than 2.24 million lightning strikes in just 48 hours as wild weather battered the east coast over the weekend.

Storms and damaging winds up to 100km/h wreaked havoc in multiple states, with volunteers responding to hundreds of calls for help.

The weather bureau said most of the 2.24 million lightning strikes were recorded in Queensland, NSW and the Northern Territory, with more storms expected this week.

In Melbourne's outer east a woman aged in her 50s was hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries after the car she was driving crashed into a tree that had fallen onto the Maroondah Highway at Kilsyth.

Victorian State Emergency Service volunteers have responded to more than 330 requests for assistance in the past 24 hours for trees fallen onto buildings, roads and powerlines.

Snowiest October on record in both Wisconsin and Minnesota

The 7.2 inches of snow that fell on Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on October 23 broke the previous October record of 5.9 inches set in 1925.

The 8.9 inches that fell on the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota broke the old record of 8.2 inches set in 1991.

Heavy rain for the third consecutive day resulted in flooding in several parts of Bengaluru.

Normal life has been disrupted in Bengaluru as rainwater entered houses after the city received a heavy downpour on Friday night.

The rainwater entered the residential area here following which people have also suffered loss of property and damage to furniture.

Videos posted on social media show the heavy flow of water flowing away vehicles.

The city of São Paulo suffered from heavy rains this afternoon. Firefighters answered 44 calls for floods, 40 for falling trees and 4 for landslides, according to information updated at 18h02. One of the trees hit a person on the street Aratangi, in Cachoeirinha, but there is still no information on the victim's health status.

The capital of São Paulo entered into a state of attention for flooding from 2:12 pm, according to data from the CGE (Center for Management of Climate Emergencies). In the North Zone, heavy rain dragged cars that were inside a car wash and piled vehicles, according to information from Globo News.

Snow in Kelowna

A 120-year-old record for most snowfall on an October day has been broken in Kelowna.

The previous record was 12.7 cm in 1899, according to Environment Canada.

Kelowna is currently sitting at around 13 cm of snowfall for the day.

And in Penticton, the South Okanagan city matched a 95 year-old record at 11 cm of snowfall.

More than 120,000 bolts have lit up the skies as wild weather lashes the state.

More than 120,000 lightning strikes have lashed South Australia as wild weather hits the state.

Of those, 19,608 bolts have struck the ground north-west of Adelaide since yesterday morning.

The remainder were ocean-based or did not hit land.

More than 15,000 were left without power on Friday during the storms.

The government in Mozambique reports that 22 people have died and 12 injured after heavy rains, and strong winds in several regions of the country since the beginning of October 2020.

Government spokesperson and Deputy Justice Minister, Filimao Suaze, said 16,657 people from 3,695 families have been affected by floods in the provinces of Niassa, Nampula, Zambézia and Manica and in Maputo city. Almost 2,000 homes were damaged and 922 completely destroyed. Schools and health centres were also damaged.

According to the minister, flooding also affected areas of Doa district in Tete province due to an overflow of the Zambezi river.

At least 13 people died in flash floods at Rapale district in the province of Nampula after the Meluli river broke its banks on 12 October. Eight other fatalities were a result of buildings collapsing during heavy rain and strong winds and one other fatality was a result of lightning strike, the minister said.

First rains of the season in Lebanon bring along frightening whirlwinds to the destroyed Beirut port area. Some viral videos are circulating on the web of the whirlwind/tornado at the site of the explosion at Beirut Port.

On 4 August 2020, a massive amount of ammonium nitrate stored at Beirut port city, the capital of Lebanon, exploded, causing at least 203 deaths, and around 6,500 injuries.

A waterspout, or sea tornado, forming above the Greek island of Naxos.

Heavy rains, waterspouts and other extreme weather phenomena, including flooding on Crete, were recorded around the Greek islands in the Aegean on Wednesday as much of the country experienced severe storms.

Just past noon on Wednesday, a waterspout, also called a sea tornado, was visible hovering over the sea around the Cycladic island of Naxos. These rotating winds appear to reach down to the sea and take it up as they spiral into the air, but in reality the water inside the spout originates in the clouds above and snakes its way down to the sea.
