Apart from battling the floodwaters in their yards, as they recede, they are faced with a new problem: silt. Mounds and mounds of it.
On Thursday, tractor operators were busy trying to clear the Chalky River of some of the silt washed down from the hills of east rural St Andrew, which has been experiencing landslides in recent weeks because of rainfall.
Some of the silt had been lodged in residents' yards on Weise Road.
Local media report that flooding struck from 04 November after 2 days of storms and rain. One person was swept away by flash floods in Chipinge, close to the border with Mozambique, on 05 November, where crops, bridges, homes and a school were severely damaged.
Meanwhile another person died in Odzi, about 130km north of Chipinge, after being struck by lightning. Buildings were damaged by strong winds in parts of Chipinge and Buhera. Hailstorms affected parts of Nyanga.
The flash flooding is in stark contrast to ongoing drought conditions affecting wide areas of the country.

On Thursday, the Second Lieutenant of the Fire Department, Carlos Oliva, said four people died in a mudslide, including a mother and her two children, in the Fortaleza district of Tela, a town in Atlantida, and a minor drowned in the village of Paujiles, reports Xinhua news agency.
On Wednesday, a girl drowned in Nueva Frontera in Santa Barbara, and a 37-year-old man drowned in San Manuel, Lempira department.
Emergency services in the southern Andalusia region responded to 130 incidents due to heavy rainfall and strong winds on 05 November. Most of the coordinated incidents (90) were in the province of , followed by Huelva (19) and Seville (12).
Firefighters were called on to rescue 3 people from a flooded house in Ronda in Malaga province after the Guadalevín River broke its banks. Videos shared on Social Media showed firefighters battling against fast-flowing water in streets of Ronda.
The government of Malaga Province said 5 major roads were closed across the province as a result of flooding and landslides.
Photos and videos shared this morning with our newsroom showed that water levels at the Macal River in San Ignacio continue to rise. Businesses near the San Ignacio Market have secured their establishments and evacuated the area.
Meanwhile, in Bullet Tree Falls Village, the river level is several inches away from the platform of the Salvador Fernandez Bridge.
Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said around half the deaths were in a single town where a hillside collapse buried some 20 houses under thick mud.
Eta made landfall in neighbouring Nicaragua as a hurricane on Tuesday.
It was later downgraded to a tropical storm.
The footage was uploaded to Twitter by Nataly Antar, who said the waterspout had neared the Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport.
The International Centre For Waterspout Research said the sighting confirmed their forecast.
A waterspout in the area on October 21 moved ashore, onto the remains of the port of Beirut, Storyful reported.

Roopnarine said in a social media update yesterday that there were reports of a man being swept away by flood waters in Hardbargain:
'I must say that this has been the worst floods experienced in my district. Today, a villager was swept away by raging flood waters in Hardbargain.'
'On the scene is the TTPS, Fire Services, Disaster Management representatives from both Princes Town Regional Corporation as well as Penal/Debe Regional Corporation as they attempt search and rescue.'
"It has been an exceptional year for the state, as it received more rains than in the recent past, especially in its drought-prone northern region, as the 4-month southwest monsoon extended beyond September for a month, leading to 33 per cent excess rainfall," weather expert G. Srinivas Reddy told IANS.
For the second consecutive year, the monsoon was very good, as the state received 27 per cent excess rainfall, recording 1,064 mm against 841 mm normal.
