Lightning struck an aircraft carrying Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern from Dublin to Belfast, but no one on board was hurt, an Irish government spokesman said overnight.
"The plane was struck by lightning as it was approaching Belfast. Everyone is fine," the spokesman said.

Engineers in the Bulgarian capital Sofia are repairing a Lufthansa Boeing 737-300 which suffered elevator damage from a lightning strike after departing to Frankfurt.
The aircraft, operating flight LH3431, had taken off from Sofia on 5 April with 44 passengers and six crew members on board.

At least two paramilitary personnel were killed and eight injured in separate lightning strikes in the north-eastern state of Tripura, officials here said Saturday. Lightning has killed four soldiers and wounded 59 others during military training in north central Sri Lanka, the military said.

The mechanism behind different types of lightning may now be understood, thanks to a combination of direct observation and computer modeling reported by a team of researchers from New Mexico Tech and Penn State.
"Our explanation provides a unifying view of how lightning escapes from a thundercloud," the researchers report in the April edition of Nature Geoscience.
Most people see lightning strikes that go from clouds to the ground, but some lightning goes upward, forming blue jets and gigantic jets. Perhaps the most dangerous lightning appears as "bolts from the blue" -- lightning that begins upward, but then moves sideways and then downward to hit the ground as much as three miles from a thunderstorm.
