Construction crews work to fill in a 30-foot-wide sinkhole on Albion Eagle Harbor Road and a path along the Erie Canal. Crews worked late Monday night to fill the hole and stabilize the site so the canal wouldn't flood two neighboring state prisons.
A massive sinkhole swept away a 30-foot-wide chunk of an Albion road and a path along the Erie Canal on Monday night, forcing crews to work late into the night to fill the opening.

The sinkhole nearly collapsed the embankment that held back the Erie Canal. Had the wall been washed out, officials feared the two state prisons next to the road would have been flooded.

The Canal Corporation activated the lock system, bringing down gates in Albion near Gaines Basin Road and in Holley, a 10-mile section. That is still a lot of water that may need to be drained to determine what caused the sinkhole, which was reported at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Public Works officials are still working to fix the sinkhole on Monument Street that widened over the weekend.

As a result of the expansion, sanitation collection lines servicing units between 2326 and 2336 Monument Street, even side only, may have bee compromised. As a precaution, water has been shut off to those units.

The Department of Public Works is considering permitting foot traffic on the sidewalk, and business operation between Patterson Park Avenue and Bradford Avenue.

Before repairs to the sinkhole can occur, it first must be stabilized.

New Fault Line Found in Fort Stockton, Texas - Could Threaten City's Water

A city councilman makes a shocking discovery in Fort Stockton and what he found could threaten the city's main water source.

  • What looks like a crack in the earth could turn out to be a big problem in Fort Stockton. City Councilman-at-Large Billy Jackson works for wildlife services. He was surveying some hog damage when he found a line.

"Just a continuous crack," Jackson said. "I actually walked for about two miles following it."

What Jackson stumbled upon turned out to be a fault line southwest of town.

Comment: More signs the earth is 'opening up'?

Mysterious gas bubbling up in Louisiana Bayous for nearly a month

    Assumption gas bubbles
Assumption Parish, Louisiana - Environmental experts are looking into an abandoned well as a possible source for mystery bubbles in Assumption Parish Bayous.

Officials have been trying to figure out what is causing the natural gas to rise up out of Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou for nearly a month.

OEP, DNR, and DEQ went out Monday night and observed what is believed to be an old orphaned well in the swamps about 1,000 feet from the main bubbling area in Bayou Corne.

It is suspected that this well may be the source of the natural gas bubbling in the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou waterways. The Department of Natural Resources is currently investigating and bringing in necessary equipment to complete the investigation of the suspect orphaned well.

Large sinkhole in Tennessee opened up suddenly to reveal underground cavern

Fairview, Tennessee. - Last week's heavy rains may be responsible for opening a 9-foot wide, 50-foot deep sinkhole along the edge of Dean and Trisha Parker's yard in Fairview.

Steven Brison, 26, a family friend, knows it's that deep because he rappelled to the bottom and measured it. He found 30 feet down, off to the side, was a 10 x 10-foot "room" with 12-foot ceilings. At 50 feet down, in the opposite direction, is a 20 x 20-foot "room" with 8-foot ceilings. From there is a 6-foot tunnel that heads toward Cumberland Drive, which runs in front of the homes, he said.

"Mother Nature made it Thursday night when she poured 4 inches of rain on us," Brison said.

Experts at the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Division of Archaeology agree with Brison's assessment, saying they "believe this is a natural phenomenon that occurs around sinkholes and caves; it's more geological in nature and not archaeological," said TDEC communications director Meg Lockhart.

Idaho woman killed driving to work after sinkhole opens up overnight and swallows her car

Melba, Idaho - A sinkhole near Melba claimed the life of a woman who was driving to work early Saturday morning on Butte Road, just east of South Powerline Road.

Kieran Donahue, a long-time deputy with the Canyon County Sheriff's Office, says this is a freak accident. He says there are rarely sinkholes in the county, let alone one that would appear on a road and kill someone.

But investigators say 32-year-old Sonia Lopez was driving to work at about 4:15 a.m. Saturday on Butte Road, south of Melba, and apparently didn't see the 20-foot wide sinkhole right in front of her.

"She's driving early in the morning hours, probably pitch black, and literally just drives right into this 2-3 foot deep hole," said Donahue.

Lopez was not wearing her seatbelt and was found dead more than an hour later by an out-of-county deputy.

Now filled-in, the only sign of the sinkhole and accident is a fresh patch of asphalt and a memorial to a young woman gone too soon. A yellow cross with messages like, "Love you and miss you so much" stands just feet from where the hole was.
