Worst floods in 40 years for Addu City, Maldives; 9 inches of rainfall in 12 hours

Southern Addu City has suffered the worst storm damage in 40 years after 12 continuous hours of torrential rain left streets inundated and flooded some 200 households.

"This is the worst flooding I've seen in decades. The water is knee-deep in most areas, and a majority of houses are under a foot of water," saud Abdulla Thoyyib, the deputy mayor.

The Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo wards suffered the most damage. According to the Maldives Red Crescent, some 32 houses in Feydhoo and 11 houses in Maradhoo-Feydhoo suffered major damage. A majority of household appliances were destroyed, a spokesperson said.

Residents are now worried of water contamination as sewers are full and overflowing. The city, home to some 20,000 people, and the second most populous region, is out of chlorine, according to Thoyyib.

Cars floating in rivers that were once streets, water gushing through ceilings and people sailing to work on boats - that's the current picture in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both desert countries, which should be dry and sunny for the whole year.

Qatar's capital Doha was apparently unprepared for the deluge and flooding that damaged many buildings in the city. The area near the capital's Hamad International Airport was hammered with around 66mm of rain in just a few days, according to the Qatar Meteorology Department. For the record, Doha has 75mm of rain on average a year.

Seasonal storms brought heavy rain to Qatar and central and eastern parts of Saudi Arabia on 25 November 2015.

Doha, Qatar, recorded more than a year's worth of rain in one day. One person has been reported as killed in the floods in Riyadh Region, Saudi Arabia in what is the third deadly flood event to hit the country in the last 4 weeks.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency reported earlier today that seasonal storms brought heavy rainfall in central and eastern areas of the country, causing severe flooding in Riyadh and Al-Qassim Regions.

Saudi Arabia civil defence report that 1 person has died in the floods in the province of Rimah, Riyadh Region, which is located about 120 kilometres north-east of the capital Riyadh.

Schools have been closed, roads blocked and in some cases flooding has forced drivers to abandon their vehicles. Saudi Arabia civil defence say they have responded to dozens of emergency calls. The city of Buraidah, Al-Qassim Region, is reported as one of the worst hit.

Heavy rains, flooding and a spike in new arrivals could threaten the lives of over 110,000 Burundian refugees in overcrowded camps in Tanzania, six aid agencies said on Monday, amid warnings of rising political tension in Burundi.

Life-threatening malaria and diarrhoea have been spreading in Nyarugusu, the world's third largest refugee camp, since the rainy season began, and damage caused by a powerful El Nino has left aid agencies short of funds throughout east Africa.

"Refugees are arriving in their hundreds every day," the agencies, which include Oxfam, Save the Children and HelpAge International, said in a statement.

"Many people are still living in overcrowded mass shelters months after their arrival, where wet floors and cramped conditions mean that the risk of respiratory infections and waterborne diseases is high."

Since 1995, weather disasters have killed millions of people & left billions injured & homeless.

Weather-related disasters such as floods and heatwaves have occurred almost daily in the past decade, almost twice as often as two decades ago, with Asia being the hardest hit region, a UN report said on Monday.

While the report authors could not pin the increase wholly on climate change, they did say that the upward trend was likely to continue as extreme weather events increased.

Since 1995, weather disasters have killed millions of people, left billions injured, homeless or in need of aid, and accounted for 90 percent of all disasters, it said.

A recent peak year was 2002, when drought in India hit 200 million and a sandstorm in China affected 100 million.

But the standout mega-disaster was Cyclone Nargis, which killed 138,000 in Myanmar in 2008.

Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding in Albania yesterday, 22 November 2015. Some areas around Tirana saw almost 9 cm (3.5 inches) of rain in 24 hours.

Albania's General Directorate of Civil Emergencies (Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Emergjencave Civile) say that one man was killed whilst working at a hydro power plant after he was swept away by an overflowing river in Dibër county.

Flooding has been reported in the northern counties of Kukës, Dibër, Durrës, Shkodër, the southern county of Gjirokastër, and also around the capital in Tirana district, in central Albania.

The River Mat overflowed in Dibër county during the evening of 22 November 2015, forcing the evacuation of several families in the village Zenisht.

Youth yesterday carry a motorcycle across a road that had been cut off at Milore, Ganze, Kilifi county, after seasonal rivers burst their banks and paralysed transport.

More than 2,500 families have been displaced by floods in Tana River county after the River Tana overflowed.

This brings to 10,000 the number of people affected by floods in the county.

Residents were displaced in Garsen, Tana Delta, Boji, Hola Galole and Bura, Kenya Red Cross Society's Gerald Bombe said yesterday.

He is the officer in charge of Tana River and Kitui counties.

Thousands of other residents have also been affected by the raging floods indirectly, Bombe told the Star on the phone.

Floodwaters have also destroyed crops.

Flash floods that hit parts of the Klang Valley for the second time in two days saw water levels rising to unprecedented levels, causing damages to vehicles, loss of income for business and hazardous trips for those who need to move around.

Traders in the Seksyen 13 area within Shah Alam are not surprised the water level rose following heavy rain yesterday, but said it was the worst flooding in the area to date.

Khairudin Hamid, 59, has been working at the Proton showroom for the last six years and he has never seen the water rise so fast.

"The water was about a feet deep, and it seeped into my office space and the main showroom area. Some of the office equipment were damaged," he said.

Heavy rain and flash floods in Saudi Arabia along its Red Sea coast has killed five people.

The Saudi Civil Defense said on Tuesday that three children were among those who were killed by the flash floods.

An 11-year-old child reportedly drowned in the western province of Yanbu. Another child, whose age was not disclosed, was swept away and killed by floodwaters in the northwestern province of Ha'il. A third child drowned in an area on the outskirts of Jiddah.

"We are all pained today by the loss of our children's lives in accidents and various areas after being swept away by the floodwaters," the Civil Defense authority said in a message posted on Twitter.

Also in Jeddah, two other people died when they were electrocuted by a lamp post.

Many areas of Sri Lanka have been affected by floods after heavy rainfall on Sunday 15 November 2015. Northern areas of the country have been among the worst hit. Mannar in Northern Province saw over 230 mm of rain in 24 hours.

According to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre (DMC), one death has been reported in Kilinochchi district, Northern Province, as a result of the floods.

DMC also report that 19,916 people (6,310 families) have been affected by flooding in the districts of Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Trincomalee, Puttalam and Gampaha. As many 2,600 have been forced from their homes by the flooding. Relief camps have been set up in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Puttalam to house those displaced.

The Sri Lanka government say that the spill gates of 22 of the main reservoirs in the country have been opened, including in Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Hambantota and Kurunegala.
