Flash floods in northern Turkey kill five, 12 missing

Five people were killed in flash floods in Turkey's northern Black Sea region and 12 others are missing, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday, adding that search and rescue efforts were still underway.

Footage from the northern province of Giresun showed floodwaters caused by unusually heavy rainfall dragging debris and vehicles along a road, leaving them buried in mud. Residents were seen clearing streets, as construction machines lifted the debris and cleared roads.

Speaking in Istanbul, Erdogan said the floods had spread to neighbouring provinces as well, causing injuries in Rize and Trabzon.

More than 100,000 Chinese were evacuated on Tuesday because of floods on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, which also threatened a 1,200-year-old Unesco World Heritage Site.

Staff, police and volunteers used sandbags to try to protect the 71 metre (233 feet) Leshan Giant Buddha in southwest China's Sichuan province, as muddy floodwater rose over its toes for the first time since 1949, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Sichuan, through which the Yangtze flows, raised its emergency response to the maximum level on Tuesday to cope with a new round of torrential rainfall.

The heavy summer rainfall has so far claimed 74 lives in Sudan, destroying more than 17,000 houses.

The number of victims of floods and heavy rains in Sudan has risen to 74, the country's Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The country's Interior Ministry has announced that 17,063 houses were completely destroyed, while 25,562 others were partially destroyed, Sputnik reported.

Torrential rain causes at least 18 fatalities in Punjab, Pakistan

Torrential rain and thunderstorms on 20 August caused damage and fatalities in Punjab Province, Pakistan.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that parts of the provincial capital Lahore recorded more than 200mm of rain in 24 hours on 20 August. Heavy rain was reported in other areas of the province, including the city of Hafizabad, which saw over 150 mm of rain during the same period.

Several houses were completely destroyed, and roofs and walls of some buildings collapsed. Local media report that at least 18 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents. Fatalities were reported in Lahore, along with the districts of Faisalabad, Sheikhupura and Mandi Bahauddin, mostly as a result of collapsed buildings or electrocution. Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide in a coal mine in Chakwal district, killing 3 miners.

PMD has warned of more heavy rainfall in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces over the coming days.

Another 27 people die in floods across Bihar, India - 8.1 million now affected in 16 districts

With two more deaths, the toll in Bihar flood climbed to 27 on Thursday as 81.79 lakh people were affected in 16 districts, Disaster Management Department bulletin said. The two deaths have been reported from Khagaria district, the bulletin said. Nearly 11.59 thousand more population were hit by flood fury on Thursday.

The calamity has affected 81,79,257 people in 1,317 panchayats of 130 blocks till Thursday against 81,67,671 sufferers till Wednesday evening, it said.

Of the 27 deaths, Darbhanga district reported 11, followed by six in Muzaffarpur, four in West Champaran and two each in Saran, Siwan and Khagaria.

Disaster authorities in Vietnam report that 7 people have died and 1 is still missing after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides.

According to Vietnam Disaster Management Authority (DMA), heavy rain, flooding and landslides have caused damage in the provinces and cities of Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Binh Duong, Vinh Phuc, Son La, Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Quang Ninh.

Some areas of Vietnam saw more than 300mm of rain in a period 16 to 19 August, including Cai Chien in Quang Ninh Province, Cat Ba in Hai Phong and Thai Nguyen City. The heavy rain fall is associated with Tropical Storm Higos which made landfall in the southern Guangdong province of China on 19 August before moving towards Vietnam and Laos.

Parts of New Delhi and its suburbs submerged in water as South Asia monsoon leaves nearly 1,300 people dead.

Heavy monsoon rains have flooded parts of India's capital New Delhi and its suburbs, throwing life out of gear for millions of people, as the death toll from the annual deluge across South Asia rose to nearly 1,300.

In New Delhi's suburb of Gurgaon, dubbed the Millenium City, roads, underpasses and residential areas were flooded on Wednesday forcing power cuts in several areas. Rafts were put into action to evacuate people in some areas.

The monsoon is vital to the densely populated region, revitalising land and waterways amid scorching summers. But it also causes widespread death and destruction.

At least 14 dead, 16 missing in floods and landslides in Nepal

At least 14 people were killed and 16 others went missing in floods and landslides in various districts of Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces in the last 24 hours.

Achham, a hill district in Sudurpaschim Province, has been hit hardest as gushing floodwaters from Kailash Khola entered several settlements in Ramroshan Rural Municipality causing a massive human and property loss.

At least six people died in the disaster while 11 others are missing, according to the district police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogendra Singh Thapa said four bodies were recovered from Koseda area in Darna of Bannigadi Jayagad Rural Municipality while two other bodies were found at Lamatna and Seri in Mangalsen Municipality. Search was underway for the missing people until late Wednesday afternoon.

Chongqing braces for worst flood in decades as China's Yangtze river sees record water flow - 8,660 sq km of arable land flooded

China's Chongqing province braces for the worst flood in decades as the Cuntan Station on the Yangtze River saw its highest water level since 1939 on Thursday morning (Aug 20).

According to the Chongqing Emergency Response Bureau, the water at the Cuntan station was measured at 191.51m, 0.1 meter higher than the devastating flood which left 1.5 million people homeless in July 1981.

More than 8,660 sq km of arable land in the province were flooded. The direct economic loss caused by the floods was about 2 billion yuan (S$394 million).

Its authorities upgraded its flood-control response to Level I on Tuesday, the highest rung in the four-tier emergency response system for floods.
