Deadly floods in central provinces of Vietnam

Disaster management authorities in Vietnam report flooding in central areas of the country after severe weather including strong winds, lightning and heavy rain from around 15 October, 2019.

Flooding affected the provinces of Nghệ An, Bình Định and Hà Tĩnh provinces. Three fatalities were reported in Nghệ An, where 5 houses were destroyed and 5,250 houses damaged by flood water. Wide areas of crops and aquatic farms have been damaged in the province. The heavy rain also triggered landslides which blocked important roads in several areas.

Heavy rain in northern Italy has caused floods and landslides in the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria.

Italy's fire department, Vigili del Fuoco, said they carried out 900 operations across the north in response to the severe weather, including 226 in the province of Milan, 220 in Alessandria, 110 in Pavia, 110 in Lodi and 110 in Genoa.

Rail and road traffic has been severely disrupted across the 3 regions. Many schools are also closed in Liguria and Piedmont.

The province of Alessandria in Piedmont is among the worst hit areas. Piedmont Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA) reported that on 22 October, 2019 as much as 253mm of rain fell in 12 hours in Casaleggio Boiro.

The dam, on the Seiba river in the region of Krasnoyarsk, burst after heavy rain on Saturday, flooding cabins where workers lived.

Russia's health ministry said 14 miners were taken to hospital, including three with severe injuries.

A criminal investigation has been opened over allegations the dam violated safety regulations.

Unprecedented heavy flooding in South Sudan's Maban County has affected nearly 200,000 people, including refugees and host population.

Situated in the Upper Nile State, the affected area is home to more than 150,000 refugees from Sudan.

South Sudan is on a gradual path to recovery from six years of civil war and now faces flooding that the region has not witnessed in almost four decades.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, working with its partners and the local authorities is rushing emergency support. People are seeking safety from the flood waters wherever they find dry land, mostly on small islands as unprecedented water levels have submerged vast areas.

Flooding has reached alarming heights in the streets of Yaou, a small town located in the South East of Ivory Coast.

Since Friday heavy rains have killed five people and an extensive damage to properties and businesses.

The country's economic capital is also affected by these floods. Traffic to the east of Abidjan has become difficult as firefighters step up efforts to rescue victims.

Last year, the rainy season, which runs from May to July, resulted in 18 deaths and hundreds of affected families.

Abidjan has 5 million inhabitants, many of whom live in precarious conditions, with uncontrolled construction, often in flood-prone areas.

28 killed in floods after 8 days of torrential rain in north-eastern Ghana

At least 28 people have been killed and several others injured following eight days of torrential rains in north-eastern Ghana. Authorities fear the casualty figures could rise.

Some 1,264 houses were partially damaged while another 286 were completely destroyed, they said.

The country's National Disaster Management Organisation has started supplying relief items to the more than 600 people displaced.

"The latest situational report indicates that 28 people have lost their lives in the Upper East region of the republic of Ghana. The rains are still ongoing. We have about 640 people displaced," the agency's spokesman George Ayisi said on Wednesday.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen is in mourning after his area residents succumbed to a landslide.

Murkomen took to social media to send his condolences to the family of Titus Kiptoo on Friday, October 18.

"My condolences to the family of Titus Kiptoo and his wife Lorna together with their children Jepchirchir and Jelimo," the Senate majority leader expressed.

"They were unfortunately killed when their house was swept by a landslide in Tuturung, Marakwet East as a result of the ongoing heavy rains. What a tragedy! Pole sana (Sincere condolences)," he added.

Reports indicated that the family was buried by the debris and recovery efforts commenced on Friday morning, October 18.

Flooding causes at least 23 fatalities in Tanzania

Flooding has affected 3 regions of Tanzania after days of heavy rain, leaving homes damaged or destroyed, roads blocked and bridges submerged.

Heavy rainfall and flooding in the Morogoro region from 12 October, 2019, has left at least 11 people dead.

Local media, quoting police sources, said that the victims include 5 pupils from Nyashiro primary school who were swept away by flood water from Mvuha river in Kibogwa ward. Six other victims were killed by flash floods in different parts of the region.

At least 4 people have died after severe weather and heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in El Salvador from 12 October, 2019.

According to media reports, 3 people died in separate incidents after they were swept away by flood waters in the departments of Morazán, La Paz and La Unión. The fourth victim died as a result of wind damage in San Miguel.

The heavy rain has also caused problems in the municipality of Ilopango, San Salvador department. Hundreds of people have evacuated and around 400 houses are threatened with collapse after the rains caused a landslide which left a 70 metre deep hole in the residential area of St Lucia.
