Authorities in Indonesia report 185 disasters in first weeks of January, 2021

Authorities in Indonesia say the country has seen 185 disasters since the start of the year, including earthquakes, tornadoes, landslides and floods.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, BNPB, hydrometeorological disasters dominate the list, with 127 flood events and 30 landslides recorded in several regions of the country during the period 01 to 21 January 2021.

At least 166 people have died in the disasters, including 91 in earthquakes, 41 in landslides and 34 as a result of floods.

Floods in Antalaha , Madagascar, After Storm

Tropical Cyclone Eloise formed over the Indian Ocean on 17 January and moved towards Madagascar, making landfall close to the coastal town of Antalaha in Antsiranana Province, on 19 January, with maximum sustained wind up to 95 kmh.

As of 20 January, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that more than 1,000 people have been directly affected in Madagascar and more than 50 houses were destroyed, as Tropical Storm Eloise passed through Antalaha, Maroantsetra, Vavatenina and Toamasina districts. Quoting local sources, OCHA said 1 person was killed in the storm.

The storm flooded 134 houses and destroyed 56, while nearly 100 schools were impacted, including 87 that were damaged and 11 destroyed, OCHA added.

A major incident has been declared in South Yorkshire as Storm Christoph brings widespread flooding, gales and snow to parts of the UK.

People are being urged to prepare as an amber weather warning for rain was issued by the Met Office for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for central northern England, affecting an area around Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, stretching down to Peterborough.

37 landslide incidents following incessant rain in Mambong state, Malaysia

The incessant rain last week resulted in 37 landslide incidents reported in the Mambong state constituency, near here, said its assemblyman, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil.

According to him, three roads connecting Kampung Sadir, Kampung Kiding and Kampung Sepit were affected with the shoulder of the main road to Kuching city collapsing in incessant heavy rain all day.

"Four houses were also damaged in Kampung Garung, Karu, Sadir and Parang respectively due to landslides," he told reporters after observing the gotong-royong work of repairing the house of Nona Budis, 63, in Kampung Garung at KM 40, Jalan Puncak Borneo, today.

He said Nona's house was the most badly damaged after it was heavily covered with soil during a landslide last Thursday night.

Torrential floods hit 7 of Bolivia's 9 provinces, with Cochabamba, Beni and Pando provinces hitting hardest.

The floods caused landslides, a large number of houses were destroyed, roads and bridges were washed out, several hundred thousand people were injured.

Bolivia's Meteorological Office predicts heavy rains will continue.

SEN teams distribute aid supplies to flood victim

Paraguay's National Emergency Secretariat (SEN) reports it is distributing humanitarian supplies to around 4,000 families affected by flash floods in the Municipality of Concepción.

Flash floods struck in around 7 districts of the city from 16 January, 2021. As of 18 January, around 1,000 families remained displaced as of 18 January.

Almost 230 mm of rain fell in the city on 17 January 2021. Levels of the Paraguay River jumped from around 1.6 meters on 17 January to 2.28 meters the following day.

Flooding at Loch Vaal in Vanderbijlpark at the weekend resulted in dramatic scenes with families having to evacuate and an access road becoming impassable.

Localised flooding had occurred after heavy rains over recent days, with a report of 80mm falling in an hour late last week.

The police Waterwing and K9 units as well as rescue services resulted in six people being rescued from the Rietspruit dam area after becoming trapped in their homes.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated and more than a dozen have been killed in recent days in flooding on Indonesia's Borneo island, officials said Sunday.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Raditya Jati said floods brought by intense rains caused floodwaters as high as 3 meters (10 feet).

As of Sunday, 39,549 people had been evacuated and at least 15 had been killed due to floods that affected 10 districts and cities in South Kalimantan province on Borneo island.
