Heavy rains saturate Portland, northwest Oregon, causing flooding, landslides, sewer overflow

Flooding
Heavy rains turned streets in the Portland area into creeks, interrupted bus and light rail service and forced the evacuation of at least one neighborhood.

Monday's flooding caused the closure of numerous roads, and heavy rains triggered landslides.

The rain also caused Portland's sewer system to overflow into the Willamette River. Officials said people should avoid contact with the river for at least 48 hours because of bacteria in the water.

A big sinkhole developed in a street in Gresham, a Portland suburb. Crews were pumping water from an elementary school in Gresham, as well as cleaning up hallways and classrooms.

The parking lot at Multnomah Falls, a popular tourist stop in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland, was closed after a creek overflowed its banks.

Storm Desmond brings highest waterfall in England back to life after hundreds of years

malham cove
Storm Desmond has brought a waterfall back to life at a famous beauty spot for the first time in living memory.

While they last, the falls at Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales are believed to be the highest in England, thundering off a cliff 260ft (80m high).

Local residents and tourists gathered on Sunday to see the phenomenon, which is believed to be the first time the falls have flowed in hundreds of years.

Stu Gledhill, who filmed the scene, wrote on YouTube: "Talking to two neighbours who are both around 80 and have both lived in Malhamdale all their lives.

"They have never seen this happen before, and some suggestions are that it could be nearly 200 years since it was last recorded."

Northwestern UK floods require emergency measures

Heavy floods in Britain's northern regions on Sunday forced the country's emergency response committee to call an urgent meeting to study the situation in affected areas. The meeting was called after prolonged heavy rain caused widespread flooding in northwest England and forced emergency services to evacuate residents from their homes.

Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said the government committee had been called to "urgently assess the scale of the floods and ensure the response remains coordinated, effective and gets help to those affected as quickly as possible," Reuters reported.

Reports say storms battered the country overnight, killing one man and leaving hundreds of homes flooded and without power. Police declared a major incident and coastguards were called in to rescue stranded residents.

Britain's national weather service, the Met Office, said in one of the worst affected areas 201.8 millimetres (7.94 inches) of rain had fallen on Saturday - only slightly below the 215 mm usually seen during the whole of December. Gusts of wind reached 90 miles per hour, a spokesman said. The worst of the storm responsible for the flooding, named 'Desmond' by the Met office, had passed according to forecasters but more wet weather was expected in coming days.

Heavy rain caused flooding in several areas of Singapore on Saturday afternoon.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) had earlier warned of thundery showers with gusty wind expected over the northern, eastern and central areas of the island between 4.05pm and 5pm on Dec 5.

Updates by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) on its Twitter page indicated that some roads were a high flood risk, with water levels rising to 100 per cent.

It said in a tweet at 4.47pm that flash floods had occurred at Lorong Buangkok and that traffic was impassable.

An Indian labourer pushes his cycle trishaw through floodwaters in Chennai on December 1, 2015, during a downpour of heavy rain in the southern Indian city.
Thousands of people have been evacuated and a rescue operation is under way in Southern India, which has been severely flooded after several days of non-stop torrential rains, which prompted the closure of schools and factories and flight cancellations.

The city of Chennai, capital of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has been almost cut off from the outside world. According to local media, the rains have set a 100-year-old record in the city, which is home to about 6 million people.

"Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds may make the situation worse in Chennai," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said, adding that the rains may continue for at least four days.

A 150-meter stretch of the highway connecting West Sumatra and Riau in Jorong Sopang, Pangkalan Koto Baru, Limapuluh Kota regency, was engulfed by up to a meter of floodwater on Sunday at 5 a.m. local time. Limapuluh Kota Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Nasriyanto said the flooding was triggered by the overflowing Batang Manggilang River.

"Only large trucks were able to pass, resulting in other vehicles from Pekanbaru and Payakumbuh backing up 2 kilometers for eight hours," Nasriyanto told The Jakarta Post on Sunday. He said the heavy rain that had drenched the region in the past three days had triggered floods and landslides in a number of locations in the regency. At least 500 homes were engulfed by over 50 centimeters of floodwater and eight homes were reportedly damaged by a landslide on Sunday morning.

"We, together with residents, are currently moving residents and livestock to safer areas. Reports are coming in, but no casualties have been reported so far," said Nasriyanto. Floods have taken place in Taram and Sarilamak villages in Harau district, Payakumbuh, Guguk, Lareh Sago Halaban and Kapur Sembilan districts.

Two homes were destroyed in Kapur Sembilan district and six in Taneh Bukit, but no casualties were reported. Ten homes were isolated by floods in Sago Halaban. "We have further heightened vigilance because the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency [BMKG] predicts high rainfall on Sunday and Monday. We urge residents living in dangerous areas to increase awareness, and if need be evacuate," said Nasriyanto.

A landslide also took place in Agam regency on Sunday morning. The road in Matur district was buried by landslides in two places. The landslides also carried rocks. The provincial public works agency deployed heavy machinery to clear the affected areas.

Ten people were Sunday morning killed when a matatu they were travelling was swept away by raging water in Nyakibai, Gatundu North, Kiambu County.

The ten, who are believed to be from the same family, drowned while seven survivors were taken to the local health centre, treated and discharged.

This gave an indication the van had 17 passengers at the time of the accident.

Traffic commandant Jecinta Kinyua said the victims were from a dowry ceremony in Nyahururu and were headed for Kandara in Murang'a County when the accident happened.

A nearly submerged vehicle in west Dallas. Swift water rescue crews did not find anyone inside.

Heavy rain across the south-central US has resulted in at least two deaths and one person missing in north Texas, with flood watches in effect as far north as St. Louis. Some areas received four inches of rain overnight as the storm moved northeast.

Rising floodwaters claimed the lives of two motorists who attempted to drive through high water in Johnson County, Texas, according to the Star-Telegram in Fort Worth. In Tarrant County, a sheriff's deputy was rescued by Fort Worth firefighters after she tried to assist a 70-year-old motorist whose car was lifted off a bridge by the flooding.

Deputy Krystal Salazar, 26, was found clinging to a tree two hours after she attempted to rescue the stranded senior, who is currently considered missing. Salazar was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Comment: All over the planet rainfall records are being broken. Within the past few days Addu City in the Maldives experienced the worst floods in 40 years as 9 inches of rain fell in 12 hours; and Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both desert countries, were ravaged by torrential rains causing havoc. Qatar's capital Doha, recorded more than a year's worth of rain in one day.

We are observing increasingly chaotic and extraordinary weather events globally. See SOTT's Earth Changes video summary for October below.
