Floods
According to figures from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 3 people died after heavy rainfall caused damage in Chautara in Naubahini Rural Municipality, Pyuthan District on 22 May 2021. At least 1 house was destroyed.
Flash floods damaged dozens of homes and other buildings in Chame Rural Municipality, Manang District on 28 May. Two homes were destroyed in a landslide in Phidim Municipality, Panchthar after heavy rain on the same day.
Another fatality occurred in Vyas Municipality, Tanahu District after heavy rain triggered a landslide on 29 May, destroying a house.
Evacuation notices have been issued in Waimakariri District. The Waimakariri River and Ashley Rakahuri regional parks have been closed, as have dozens of roads across the region. Emergency crews have carried out flood rescues, including some by helicopter.
Rainfall
Some areas have seen more than 300mm of rain since 29 May 2021. More heavy rain is forecast and New Zealand's MetService has issued a "Red Warning For Rain" lasting until the afternoon of 31 May 2021.
In around 21 hours on 30 May, the weather station at Cookies Hut (Hakatere Conservation Park) recorded 247.5 mm of rain; Mount Somers 295.5 mm; Blandswood 232.5 mm; Geraldine Forest 267.0 mm; and 13 Mile Bush 221.5 mm.
According to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency BNPB, heavy rainfall caused the Lakit River to overflow on 27 May, flooding 4 villages in Selangit sub-district and one village in Suku Tengah Lakitan Ulu sub-district, where flood water reached up to 1.5 metres deep.
Full damage assessments are yet to be completed but as of late 27 May, 247 houses, 1 school and 2 places of worship were inundated with flood water up to 1 metres deep in Selangit. Around 1,235 people have been affected.
In a Facebook post. Marshall said hours-long heavy rainfall has resulted in extensive flooding in low- lying and others areas. "We regret to report that we are expecting the highest tide in a few hours.
In light of the above we ask that you prepare and take all necessary measures to secure your property.
The Council will continue to update you as we remain on the ground to monitor situation," Marshall told residents.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas crossed the North Odisha coast about 20km south of Balasore during the morning of 26 May 2021, with an estimated wind speed of 130 to 140 km/h and gusts of 155 km/h. Moving north-westwards Yaas later weakened to a Severe Cyclonic Storm.
IMD warned of storm surge of 2-3 meters in coastal areas of Balasore, Bhadrak and Medinipur districts in Odisha. Rainfall warnings were issued in Odisha and West Bengal. IMD said heavy rain was likely from 28 May in parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
