Mumbai received about 60 millimetres of rainfall in an hour on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging in several places including Hindmata, Milan Subway and Sion. The flooding of the railway tracks led to brief suspension of suburban rail services.

Mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Kishori Pednekar blamed the railways for the flooding of the tracks and the adjoining areas. Pednekar said the Central Railway did not cooperate with the BMC, and therefore, the BMC could not conduct cleaning works in the nullahs and the adjoining areas that fall under the railways' jurisdiction.

However, the Central Railway refuted her claim. Its spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said they have been in touch with the BMC officials to deliver the best possible services to the passengers. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray visited the BMC's disaster management room to take stock of the situation. BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal and Pednekar visited Hindmata.

The wet spell that began with the onset of monsoons on Wednesday has given Mumbai 94% of its June rain so far. The showers continued, albeit way more moderately, on Thursday in the city even as the southwest monsoon covered the entire state.

The IMD has forecast heavy rain (orange alert) at isolated places in the city for the weekend. An alert for extremely heavy rain has been issued for Monday.

The 2021 flood in Uttarakhand, India, that resulted in over 200 dead and missing was the result of an avalanche that dropped about 27 million square metres of rock and glacier ice from the nearby Ronti mountain.

On 7 February 2021, residents of the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand saw a plume of dust coming down through the valley followed swiftly by a massive amount of water that damaged two hydropower projects. They extensively filmed the events of that day, broadcasting it in real time.

"It's not that this is the first time that a flood happened, but it is the first time that a flood happened in February. It snows in the region in winter and floods generally happen in the monsoon season which is between June and August," says Kavita Upadhyay, an independent journalist and water policy expert in India.

Dan Shugar at the University of Calgary in Canada and his colleagues used satellite images and sensor data to trace the source of the flood and found that it was triggered by an avalanche consisting of about 80 per cent bedrock and 20 per cent glacier ice that dropped almost 2 kilometres to the valley below, then continued travelling down, picking up trees and other debris along the way.

India records second-highest May rainfall in 121 years

May received the second-highest rainfall in 121 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its monthly report Thursday, attributing two back-to-back cyclones and western disturbances for the record precipitation.

It also said that at 34.18 degrees Celsius, the average maximum temperature over India this May was the fourth lowest since 1901.

The lowest ever temperature recorded for May was 32.68 degrees Celsius in 1917. The temperature was lowest since 1977 when it was of 33.84 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.

There was no significant heatwave spell observed during the month over any parts of India, he said. Rainfall over the country as a whole for the month of May 2021 shows that it has recorded 107.9 millimetres which is 74 per cent more than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 62 mm.

"Rainfall over India during the month of May was second-highest since 1901. The ever highest rainfall occurred in the year 1990 (110.7mm)," the IMD said in its monthly report for May. May saw the formation of a cyclone each in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Tauktae formed over the Arabian Sea and developed into an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm'.

Floods prompt evacuations and rescues in Victoria, Australia - rivers rise significantly beyond major flood warning levels

Severe weather including heavy rain and strong winds affected the state of Victoria, Australia, from 09 June 2021. Wind gusts of over 100 km/h were reported. More than 200mm of rain fell in 24 hours in several locations. Police said one person died in a vehicle caught in flood water.

The heavy rainfall caused rivers to rise, in particular the Traralgon Creek in Traralgon where State Emergency Services (SES) issued an evacuation notice for more than 200 homes. SES said:

"If you live, work, or are holidaying in the Traralgon Creek area you should evacuate now. Flood waters are currently sitting above major flood level."

Levels of the creek jumped from under 1 metre to 5.78 metres in the space of around 12 hours between 09 and 10 June 2021. Major flood level here is 4.80 metres.

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, with dramatic effect on 09 June, 2021. More than 200mm of rain falling in less than 12 hours. Roads were inundated with flood water up to 50cm deep, causing widespread traffic disruption. Train services were also interrupted.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming 3 or 4 days. Fifteen National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed to various parts of Maharashtra state in response.

The government of Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), reported a building collapsed in Malvani, Malad West. At least 11 people have died in the incident, with 17 injured and 15 rescued. More are feared buried in the rubble and firefighters are conducting rescue operations. Three other buildings nearby are in "dangerous condition" and the residents have been evacuated, the BMC said.

Flash floods in Santa Catarina, Brazil after 11 inches of rain in 24 hours

Torrential rain caused flooding and landslides in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil from 08 June 2021.

The government of Santa Catarina said teams from the Military Fire Department of Santa Catarina (CBMS) responded to calls for assistance in several municipalities.

The municipality and city of Canelinha was one of the hardest hit, where dozens of homes were flooded and 146 people evacuated to temporary shelter. Other rescues and evacuations were carried out in Brusque, Tubarão and Itajaí. CBMS also responded to calls in Balneário and Camboriú. In total at least 16 municipalities have reported incidents of flooding and severe weather impacts, with further heavy rain fall forecast.

More than 280mm of rain fell in Canelinha in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil in 24 hours to 09 June 2021. At least 7 other locations in the state saw more than 150mm of rain during the same period.

Flash floods swamped areas around the city of Ankara, Turkey, on 09 June 2021. Worst affected was the metropolitan district of Mamak, Ankara Province. Videos shared on Social Media showed flood waters racing through streets, dragging vehicles and debris. Media reported dozens of buildings and roads damaged.

Turkey's meteorological agency Meteoroloji Genel Müdürlüğü wanred of further heavy rainfall in the south of the country, in particular the provinces of Adana, Osmaniye and Kahramanmaraş.

In the past few days, the rainfall in Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong has been almost the same. Zhuhai was completely flooded, roads turned into oceans, and cars were submerged in water. However, there were only a few very minor local floods in Macau and Hong Kong. why?

In the beautiful coastal city of Zhuhai, residents have been in a state of water shortage since 2021. It rains and there is water, but the weather is sunny and dry - lack of water. Multiple properties along the Skeena River have been evacuated in northwestern British Columbia, amid rising floodwaters.

The Regional District of Kitimat Stikine has declared a local state of emergency for parts of Electoral Area C, and issued evacuation orders for all properties in New Remo, west of Terrace, and all properties in Old Remo, past the intersection of Old Remo Road and White Bottom.

On Friday afternoon, an evacuation alert for Dutch Valley was upgraded to an evacuation order.

RCMP said a 73-year-old man was found dead in a flooded basement of a home in the 6700-block of Kilby Road in New Remo, inside the evacuation zone, and that the death was "likely" related to the high river.

B.C.'s River Forecast Centre has issue flood warnings for the Skeena Rive above the Babine River, the Stikine River and its tributaries, and the Tuya River.
