Mono river flooding affects 50,000 in Togo and Benin

Heavy rain in Togo and Benin during October caused the Mono river to overflow from around 23 October, 2019.

Levels of the Mono river at Athiémé in Benin jumped from 7.8 metres on 19 October 2019 to 8.5 metres on 23 October. Satellite images show around 4,000 hectares of land are under water in areas around either side of the border between the 2 countries.

In Togo areas of Maritime Region, in particular Lacs prefecture, are worst hit. Around 2,000 households (8,000 people) are thought to be affected in the region.

Evacuations after Cyclone Kyarr brings coastal floods to UAE and Oman

As Tropical Cyclone Kyarr makes its way across the Arabian Sea, a combination of high tide, storm surge and high waves caused coastal flooding in parts of United Arab Emirates and Oman from 28 October, 2019.

In United Arab Emirates, roads were closed in Sharjah and Fujairah as high waves and storm surged caused flooding along the coast. Police urged caution.

Local media reported that around 20 houses were flooded with seawater in Kalba, Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Residents of the houses have been evacuated. Businesses and roads were also flooded and schools were closed. Gulf News reported waves of 7 feet (2 metres) in the area.

Disaster authorities in the country said there have been no reports of casualties or injuries.

Two children believed to be among those who drowned in city of Beledweyne, UN humanitarian arm says

Numerous people are feared dead after flooding caused a boat to capsize and thousands to flee their homes in Somalia.

Up to 20 people were thrown into the water during the accident in the central city of Beledweyne, near the Ethiopia border, on Monday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

Two children are believed to have been among those who drowned when the vessel overturned in a river flowing through the city in Hiiraan province.

The number of casualties is not yet known, however mixed reports claim between 10 and 15 people are feared dead.

A landslide caused by heavy rains in western Cameroon killed at least 42 people overnight, state media reported on Tuesday.

Rescue teams spent the day scouring the rubble of destroyed houses in the town of Bafoussam in the western highlands. Among the bodies recovered were those of 26 children, Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) reported.

The search will resume on Wednesday for additional bodies believed to remain under the rubble, CRTV reported.

"Around 10 p.m. I heard a noise," said Albert Kenge, who survived the landslide. "I saw a big cloud of dust and when it dissipated, I saw that the mountain had collapsed."

At least 1 person died and 11 homes were destroyed after a landslide in the Junín Region of Peru.

The landslide occurred in the Perené district, Chanchamayo province, late on 25 October, 2019. A short burst of heavy rain caused the landslide, sending mud, fallen trees and debris from surrounding hillsides onto the houses below.

Peru's National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) said a total of 5 people suffered injuries, 3 of which were serious. INDECI transferred the victims to nearby hospitals. Around 30 people were evacuated to safe areas.

Military personnel, including engineers, have been deployed to help with repairs and clean-up operations.

Floods trap over 100 villages in northeast Nigeria

Over 100 villages in Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa have been trapped by floods, caused by persistent rainfall in that part of the country, a local official said on Monday.

While confirming the development to reporters, Muhammad Sulaiman, head of the state emergency management agency, described the current flood situation as the worst ever experienced in the state.

The villages affected cut across seven local government areas of Adamawa, affecting mostly farmers, Sulaiman said.

During an on-the-spot assessment by a team of government officials on Sunday, the official said they observed that in some villages, farmers were seen trying to evacuate what is left of their affected rice and maize.

Thousands forced to live in tents as floods hit 11 districts in North Sumatra, Indonesia

Floodwaters inundated at least 11 districts across Batubara regency in North Sumatra over the weekend following heavy rains that hit the region in the past week, leaving about 1,087 houses flooded and thousands of people stranded in evacuation sites.

The Batubara Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said high-intensity rainfall had struck the regency for at least the past seven days, causing the rivers to overflow and flood residents' houses.

Among the affected areas were the districts of Air Putih, Datuk Limapuluh, Nibung Habungs, Sei Suka and Talawi.

Puting beliung (small tornadoes) also reportedly hit residential areas in Kuala Indah village of Air Putih district, damaging a number of houses, BPBD Batubara head Anwardi said.

Four more people have been killed by ongoing heavy rain in Tanzania, bringing to the death toll to 44, police said on Sunday.

Edward Bukombe, Tanga regional police commander, told Xinhua by phone that the four victims, including three children, were killed by flash floods in different parts of Handeni district.

"Today rescue teams found four bodies in different parts of Handeni district," said Bukombe.

On Saturday, the police official said the death toll from ongoing heavy rain in the region rose from 30 to 40.

Bukombe said a car ferrying 10 people was swept away by raging waters at dawn on Saturday after the driver had tried to drive through a flooded river in Handeni district, bringing to 40 the total number of people killed by current rains in the east African nation.

State TV says another 11 people have been injured after heavy rain lashed northeastern parts of Saudi Arabia

Seven people have been killed and 11 injured in floods after heavy rain lashed northeastern parts of Saudi Arabia, Al-Ekhbariya state television reported Monday.

Rescue services in the northeastern city of Hafer al-Batin, about 100 kilometres southwest of Kuwait, said that 16 people were forced to evacuate their homes.

Seven affected by the rain were provided with shelter, it added.

The UN reports that over 120,000 people have been displaced by flooding in Ethiopia this month.

In a report of 20 October, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) said that during the month of October, "several flood incidences were reported in Afar, Oromia, SNNP and Somali regions displacing thousands and causing loss of property and livelihoods. Reportedly, some 202,202 people have been displaced across the country, the majority (127,524 people) in Somali region. "
