10 dead after heavy rain, floods in Maharashtra, India

Ten people died in heavy rains and floods in Marathwada region of Maharashtra over the last 48 hours, officials said on Tuesday.

Besides, more than 200 cattle were washed away and number of houses were also damaged in the rain fury in the region, which comprises eight districts - Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Jalna and Hingoli.

Excessive rainfall (over 65 mm) was recorded in over 180 circles falling under these eight districts, a release issued by the divisional commissioner's office said.

The heavy showers forced authorities to open the gates of various dams for water discharge, which led to flooding in villages located on the banks of the Manjara river in Beed and Latur districts.

Heavy downpour has triggered a landslide in the Sichuan province in southwestern China that killed two people and left 12 others missing, according to local media. An ANI report stated that the China Global Television Network (CGTN) informed on Sunday, quoting the local authorities, "At least two persons have died and 12 others remain missing after a heavy rain-triggered mudslide that hit Tianquan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province on Saturday."

According to Xinhua, the landslide happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, trapping 62 individuals. The emergency management office in Ya'an which oversees Tianquan County stated that 50 individuals had been rescued as of 5 p.m., including two deaths.

Disaster authorities in Thailand report dozens of provinces in the country have been affected by flooding after heavy rain over recent days brought by Tropical Storm Dianmu.

Thailand's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DDPM) reported flooding has affected 58,977 households across 27 provinces. Some of the affected areas had already seen flooding earlier this month after a period of heavy rain from 16 September brought by the Southwest Monsoon.

According to images and data from Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), the worst of the flooding is in northern and central regions.

In the north, Sukhothai province is the worst hit area with 7,392 households affected, mostly in Sri Samrong, Khirimas and Muang districts, according to DDPM. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha visited flood-hit communities of Sukhothai's Sri Samrong district.

One person died while two others went missing after being swept away by a flash flood while swimming in a waterfall in the northern town of Catmon, Cebu, on Sunday afternoon, September 26.

Wilson Ramos, information officer of the Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said they have now switched to a "search and retrieval" operation to look for the missing persons.

Ramos said there is only a slim chance that the two missing persons, identified as 32-year-old Jacel Alastra and her daughter Princess who is only seven years old, may still be alive.

The body of Alastra's nephew Kent Jude Monterolla, 17, was retrieved Sunday night a few kilometers down at the spillway in Barangay Corazon, which is near the beach and about seven kilometers from the waterfalls.

A video of the incident showed that a group of 11 people was bathing at the pristine waters of the layered falls when the waters suddenly turned brown, swelled, and swept all of them downstream.

Heavy rainstorm triggers flooding, forces evacuation in China

A heavy rainstorm hit central China's Henan Province, forcing the evacuation of more than 4,100 villagers after rain-triggered floods caused severe damages to roads and disrupted local power and communication networks.

The storm, which left one person dead and two others missing, battered 15 townships of Nanzhao County since Friday morning, affecting nearly 300,000 people.

A total of 4,175 villagers have been evacuated to temporary shelters by Sunday morning, according to local authorities.

"Each village official is responsible for the evacuation of certain households. The officials have been evacuating villagers to the village administration center, schools and hotels. They will provide accommodation, free dishes and other supplies such as instant noodles, water and milk," said Li Dayong, deputy chief of Nanzhao County.

Electricians have rushed to villages to repair power and communication systems. Reservoirs in the county have also been releasing flood water to control the risk of breaches.

As predicted, heavy rainfall pounded the province this week, but some parts of Ontario seemed to get the heaviest blasts, flooding roads and threatening homes.

A special weather statement issued on Tuesday from Environment Canada called for as much as 75 millimetres of rain for parts of Toronto. The city did see its fair share of rain.

A ramp for the westbound Hwy 401 at Hwy 410 was flooded Thursday morning.

The heavy rain that fell in the Algarve this morning has caused disruption in Vila Real de Santo António, where several streets were flooded.

The water level rose so high that it flowed over side pavements in many streets, making them impossible to drive on.

Water even entered homes and businesses in some parts of the town, reports Lusa news agency, which adds that the worst of the floods were reported at Rua de Angola, Avenida dos Bombeiros and a considerable section of the town's historical centre.

The floods were caused by a heavy bout of rain between 6am and 8.30am. CDOS Faro, the regional command of rescue operations, told Lusa that the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) registered 42.1 millimetres of rain in the town in just one hour.
