Pit bull terrier kills deaf and mute boy in Cape Town, South Africa

PIT BULL ATTACK
A deaf and mute boy unable to call for help has reportedly been mauled to death by a neighbour's dog.

Luqmaan Jardien, 3, was alone in his Cape Town home with his neighbour's dog when the tragedy unfolded.

The three-year-old South African, born to deaf and mute parents, had reportedly been dragged into the garden by the animal when the incident was first spotted by a neighbour.

"I looked out the bathroom window and I saw Luqmaan lying there and the dog was busy biting him in the neck," said the neighbour, who asked not to be identified.

She alerted Luqmaan's uncle, who then rushed to the boy's aid.

Ukrainian tourist, Egyptian guide lose limbs in rare shark attack

A young Ukrainian tourist lost an arm and an Egyptian tour guide a leg in a rare shark attack over the weekend off Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, officials said Tuesday.

The attack took place Sunday when two tourists — a mother and her son —and their tour guide were snorkeling in Ras Mohammed national park, the Environment Ministry said in a statement.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and an initial investigation showed that the attack involved a 2-meter (6-foot) long Oceanic Whitetip shark, the ministry said.

The ministry did not release details of the injuries, but a statement by Ukraine's State Agency for the Development of Tourism said Monday the 12-year-old boy was in intensive care, and that surgery had failed to save his arm.

Dog attacks, kills infant sleeping with parents in Hampton, Virginia

dog attack
Authorities are investigating after a reported dog attack claimed the life of a baby early Monday morning.

Hampton police were called around 3:15 a.m. to respond to a report of "a vicious canine that had killed an infant" in the first block of Scotland Road, officials said. Responding officers found a "small infant that had sustained injuries consistent with a canine attack," according to the Hampton Police Division.

The infant's parents said they were sleeping in their bed with the child when "a large amount of motion" woke them, investigators said. The child's father told police that when he woke, he saw "extensive injuries to the child" and immediately euthanized the dog.

Comment: The last 9 months has seen an extraordinary number of fatalities as a result of canine attacks on people right across the world, many by trusted, long-time family pets. As human behavior becomes increasingly crazy perhaps this is being echoed in the animal kingdom? And not least by those creatures most chiefly associated with man?

Newborn baby killed by dog in Hamilton, New Zealand

dog attack
Witnesses to the aftermath of a dog fatally attacking a newborn baby say nothing could've prepared them for what they saw.

Emergency services rushed to the child's aid on Sunday evening after they were bitten by a dog at an address in the Hamilton suburb of Enderley. They were then transported to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries.

On Tuesday morning, police confirmed the baby had died overnight and the matter had been referred to the Coroner.

The baby was just one day old at the time and the mother was still wearing her hospital band.

Bird flu fears: Dutch farms ordered to keep poultry indoors after 6 wild swans found dead

The Dutch government said Thursday it is ordering poultry farms to keep their birds indoors after six wild swans were found recently dead and tests on two of the birds came back positive for a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu.

The order was set to come into force at midnight Thursday, Agriculture Minister Carola Schouten said in a statement.

She said experts believe the H5N8 strain of avian influenza likely was brought to the Netherlands by birds migrating from Russia and Kazakhstan because the same strain circulated there over the summer.

Cicada-inspired waterproof surfaces closer to reality, report researchers

Researchers have demonstrated a new fabrication technique that allows them replicate the nanostructures found on cicada wings that make them water- and microbe-repellent.
Champaign, Illinois. — A multidisciplinary group that studies the physical and chemical properties of insect wings has demonstrated the ability to reproduce the nanostructures that help cicada wings repel water and prevent bacteria from establishing on the surface. The new technique - which uses commercial nail polish - is economical and straightforward, and the researchers said it will help fabricate future high-tech waterproof materials.

The team used a simplified version of a fabrication process - called nanoimprinting lithography - to make a template of the complex pillar-shaped nanostructures on the wings of Neotibicen pruinosus, an annual cicada found in the central region of the United States. The templates are fully dissolvable and produce replicas that average 94.4% of the pillar height and 106% of the original wing, or master structure's pillar diameter, the researchers said.

The results of the study are published in the journal Nano Letters.

"We chose to work with wings of this species of cicada because our past work demonstrates how the complex nanostructures on their wings provide an outstanding ability to repel water. That is a highly desirable property that will be useful in many materials engineering applications, from aircraft wings to medical equipment," said Marianne Alleyne, an entomology professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who co-led the study with Donald Cropek, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, and Nenad Miljkovic, a professor of mechanical science and engineering at Illinois.

America's first murder hornet nest found in Washington State

An Asian giant hornet, seen in a handout photo
Entomologists in Washington State have discovered the first Asian giant hornet nest in the US, and are planning to destroy it as an invasive species. The terrifying insects wipe out native honeybees, and can kill a human.

With a three-inch wingspan and a potent, venomous stinger, the Asian giant hornet is the world's largest species of hornet, and a fearsome killing machine. A handful of these creatures can devastate a honeybee hive in a matter of hours, decapitating hundreds of bees before taking the hive as their own.

Entomologists with the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) first received reports of these hornets last December, and this week managed to capture two of them. The hornets were fitted with tracking devices, and the scientists stalked them back to their nest, inside a tree in Blaine, Washington.
