A 10-year-old boy died after being savagely attacked by stray dogs in Sindh's Khairpur district, the police said on Monday.

According to the police, the minor victim, identified as Ghulam Murtaza, was assaulted by a pack of dogs in the Kot Diji area and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The police said a first information report (FIR) of the dog attack that led to the boy's death will be lodged against the Naseer Faqeer Union Council's (UC) secretary. Local residents have confined themselves to their houses due to fear of a possible attack by savage dogs that are freely roaming the streets of the neighborhood.

On November 10, a 12-year-old boy had died after being injured by stray dogs in Hala city of Sindh's Matiari district. A pack of savage dogs attacked the boy, leaving him critically injured, according to his family. Local residents rushed him to the Hala Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The pandemic and the consequent lockdown seem to have had little impact on Uttarakhand's rampant human-wildlife conflict (HWC) menace. Till October 30 this year, 50 people have already been killed (nearly half of them by leopards) and 214 injured in attacks by wild animals in the state. The figures are close to those of 2019, when 58 people lost their lives to such attacks and 181 were injured.

According to data exclusively accessed by TOI from the Uttarakhand forest department, in the first 10 months of the year - from January to October - 24 people have been killed in leopard attacks and 13 by snakebites.

Eight people have died due to attacks by elephants, two each by bear and wild pig attacks and one after being attacked by a crocodile.

Orcas ram yacht for 2 hours in unexplained string of attacks off Iberian coast

killer whale
A British yacht captain said a pod of orcas repeatedly rammed his boat for two hours off the coast of Portugal last month, the latest of more than 40 unexplained killer whale attacks on vessels off the Iberian coast in the last six months.

"I don't frighten easily and this was terrifying," British sailor David Smith told the BBC last week.

Smith and his crew were delivering a 45-foot yacht to a new location for a client when the pod of six or seven killer whales began ramming the underside of the vessel.

"It was continuous," Smith said. "I think there were six or seven animals, but it seemed like the juvenile ones — the smaller ones — were most active. They seemed to be going for the rudder" — typical of what others have reported in the string of attacks.

Planet of the Apes? - Scientists used human genes to make monkey brains bigger

In an experiment that could portend a real-life Planet of the Apes situation, scientists spliced human genes into the fetus of a monkey to substantially increase the size of the primate's brain. And it worked.

Researchers from Germany's Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Germany and Japan's Central Institute for Experimental Animals introduced a specifically human gene, ARHGAP11B, into the fetus of a common marmoset monkey, causing the enlargement of its brain's neocortex. The scientists reported their findings in Science.

The neocortex is the newest part of the brain to evolve. It's in the name — "neo" meaning new, and "cortex" meaning, well, the bark of a tree. This outer shell makes up more than 75 percent of the human brain and is responsible for many of the perks and quirks that make us uniquely human, including reasoning and complex language.

Experts are investigating the cetaceans' cause of death after no apparent sign of having been hit by a ship or caught in a trawler's net.

An abnormal number of fin whales has been found washed up on France's western shores with no apparent sign of external collision, raising concerns among experts of a potential viral pathogen.

Marine biologists on Monday used a mechanical digger and long knives to dissect one of the cetaceans taking samples to find evidence of the cause of the deaths.

Just in the past month and a half, at least six fin whales - the second largest species of whale after the blue ones - were found dead. All have been malnourished and shown evidence of haemorrhaging in the cardiac and respiratory systems.

The latest was discovered on Friday near Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. It measured nearly 16 metres (52 feet) and weighed an estimated 10 tonnes.
