bear
A grizzly bear attacked and killed a person camping in western Montana early Tuesday, triggering an intensive search for the bruin by wildlife officials and law enforcement officers who planned to kill the animal, officials said.

The pre-dawn attack happened in Ovando, a town of fewer than 100 people about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Helena, said Greg Lemon, a spokesperson with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks.

The bear had previously wandered into the area where the victim was camping and left but later returned, Powell County Sheriff Gavin Roselles said.

"There was an earlier contact with the bear prior to the event," Roselles said. "The bear basically came back into the campsite. It wandered into a campsite a couple different times."

This steller's sea eagle was spotted on the Restigouche River in northern New Brunswick.
The New Brunswick sighting of an eagle native to eastern Russia is generating excitement across North America's bird-watching community.

Forest Condo, a fisheries ranger with the Listuguj Mi'kmaq First Nation, was on the Restigouche River as part of his job on Monday evening, when he came across a steller's sea eagle perched in a tree on Gillis Island.

Speaking to birder Alain Clavette, Condo said he at first thought the bird might have been one of the dozens of bald eagles that regularly prey on sea bass in the area, but a closer look revealed its noticeably large, bright yellow beak and unique white patches on its wings.

"I was dumbfounded — like, wow, what is this?" Condo said.

"So I Googled it and that's what came up — the steller's eagle — and I was like, really, really surprised. What's that doing in our area? A bird that should have been in Russia."

Rogue elephant kills 16 people over 2 months in Jharkhand, India

elephant
A rogue elephant has killed at least 16 villagers in the past two months in central India after likely being expelled from his herd "for bad behaviour", a wildlife official said Thursday.

The mature male, believed to be 15 or 16 years old, has been on the rampage in the tribal Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand state ever since he was separated from the herd of 22 elephants.

"It's likely he was in heat and was expelled because of his bad behaviour or sexual rivalry with other males," Satish Chandra Rai, regional divisional forest officer, told AFP.

"We are studying his behaviour and a team of 20 officials is constantly trying to track him because our first priority is to protect the animal."

The elephant, which is now on its way back seeking to reunite with the herd, has managed to outwit officials with his sheer speed and unpredictability.
