A local resident recorded footage whilst driving down the C-31b highway which connects Tarragona to Salou, sharing the video on social media to alert the police and environmental groups of their strange discovery.
This caught the attention of the Grup d'Estudi i Protecció dels Ecosistemes Catalans-Ecologistes de Catalunya (GEPEC) who believe that the deaths of the starlings may have been caused by a chemical leak in the atmosphere or mass poisoning. They also detail that from speaking to residents in the area that they reported "strong chemical smells in the air."
Over a fifth of India's bird diversity, ranging from the Short-toed Snake Eagle to the Sirkeer Malkoha, has suffered strong long-term declines over a 25-year period, while more recent annual trends point to a drastic 80% loss among several common birds, a new scientific report jointly released by 10 organisations said on Monday.
The State of India's Birds 2020 (SoIB) assessment raises the alarm that several spectacular birds, many of them endemic to the sub-continent, face a growing threat from loss of habitat due to human activity, widespread presence of toxins including pesticides, hunting and trapping for the pet trade. Diminishing population sizes of many birds because of one factor brings them closer to extinction because of the accelerated effects of others, the report warned. For every bird species that was found to be increasing in numbers over the long term, 11 have suffered losses, some catastrophically.
Of 101 species categorised as being of High Conservation Concern — 59 based on range and abundance and the rest included from high-risk birds on the IUCN Red List — endemics such as the Rufous-fronted Prinia, Nilgiri Thrush, Nilgiri Pipit and Indian vulture were confirmed as suffering current decline, and all except 13 had a restricted or highly restricted range, indicating greater vulnerability to man-made threats.
The incident happened around 10 am while the child was walking on a trail about two miles from the main parking lot, park officials said.
"The animal, suspected to be a mountain lion, was scared away by adults who were with the child," they said.
"It came out of the bushes and right about when it grabbed a hold of the girl and an adult pushed the mountain lion and it ran off," said MidPeninsula Regional Open Space District ranger, Brad Pennington.
The mysterious sight of over a dozen feathered-black carcasses on a rural road between Abbotsford and Chilliwack caused one woman to pull over to get a closer look.
Katie Hogan says she doesn't know how the flock of birds met their end, but she counted 15 bodies in total.
"The [birds'] insides were out," she said. "I don't know what kind of birds they are, but they are smaller than a crow and black."

Queensland boy Elijah Deacon has been hospitalised with deep cuts in a wallaby attack.
Elijah Deacon's mother was forced to fight off the mob after he suffered deep scratches and bites.
Elijah was playing with his brother at a sports field in Cairns when the animals chased him down and knocked him to the ground.
His distraught mother, Riana, has told 7NEWS the attack was relentless and vicious.
She says she managed to fight the animals off, before they started chasing her.
The boy, Sujawal, had gone into the fields to play when the dog attacked him, his family said.
Residents want the culling campaign to be restarted in the area. But the District Health Authority Chief Executive Officer Dr Munawar Abbas believes the reason for the attacks is because people have kept the dogs as pets.
The Multan Metropolitan Corporation has informed the provincial health department multiple times of the failure of the culling campaign.
The Maury County Fire Department said crews responded alongside personnel from the Maury County Office of Emergency Management, Maury County Animal Control and the Spring Hill Fire Department when the horse was found in the sinkhole Tuesday on Forest Ridge Trail.

Eric Lewis, curator of the Moruga museum, stands next to a dead whale which washed up at the La Lune beach in Moruga yesterday.
Hours later, at around 4 pm, two dead whales washed ashore at another area of the beach. Then at around 12.30 pm, another dead whale was spotted on the shore about a mile away from where the two other whales beached. Moruga museum curator Eric Lewis has taken possession of the three carcasses.
What exactly is causing the whales to die is not yet known, but the T&T Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TTMMSN) has warned members of the public not to touch the stranded marine mammals. Veterinarian Dr Wade Seukeran said the TTMMSN has responded to reports of stranded melon-headed whales at various coastlines and necropsies performed on some of the whales revealed that they died from a disease.
