US tourist, 80, killed in attack by 'aggressive' bull elephant while on safari in Zambia

BBBBBBB
An 80-year-old American woman was killed during a wildlife safari in Zambia after an "aggressive" bull elephant "unexpectedly" charged at the vehicle, the tour operators said.

The incident happened at around 9.30am local time on 30 March at the Kafue National Park in Zambia and the shocking video of the moment was captured and posted on social media.

The video showed the adult male elephant chasing the car which came to a halt as the animal closed in. The elephant then knocked the vehicle over as the guide screamed, "Hey, hey, hey!"

The woman has been identified as Gail Mattson by her family, according to ABC News. Safari operators, Wilderness Destinations, said the elephant "unexpectedly charged" at the vehicle that was on an excursion with six guests and a guide.

"An aggressive bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide who were on a game drive from Lufupa Camp," the company said in a statement to ABC News.

'Doomsday fish' that 'surfaces before disasters' seen before Taiwan earthquake

A "doomsday" fish that is said to only appear before disasters strike was spotted by a fisherman who claims it foreshadowed the deadly Taiwan earthquake.

The Oarfish is a deep sea creature that typically lives at ocean depths of up up to 3,300 feet and is rarely seen by humans. But according to Japanese legend, when one of these fish is spotted, its a sign that a catastrophe of some sort is imminent. Now, a fisherman in the neighbouring Philippines has revealed he caught the foreboding fish shortly before Taiwan was shaken by the most powerful earthquake it has seen in 25 years, which has so far killed at least nine people.

Brenjeng Caayon, who snapped up the fish near near Kalanggaman Island, roughly 900 miles south of the epicentre, insists it is no coincidence. He said: This is a bad omen, according to superstition. And it might be an omen, because just this morning an earthquake rocked Taiwan. I didn't believe it before, but now I've started to."

He recalled how he and three other fisherman were out on his boat when they came across the creature just 30 hours before the earthquake hit. At first, his crewmates had no idea how significant the find was as they didn't know what it was. Caayon said: "They were supposed to throw it back in, but I stopped them; I told them to bring it ashore. When I saw it, I recognised it immediately; I've already seen an oarfish before, but not this huge."

A 130,000-year-old stingray sand sculpture maybe the world's oldest animal art

This is 90,000 years before cave paintings started to emerge in Europe.

Sting Ray art
© Image courtesy of Jan De Vynck (left) and Paul Cowley and Alan Whitfield (right)Spot the difference: the stingray "sculpture" with measuring bar (10cm) for scale and an illustration of a blue stingray.
At first glance, this might just look like strangely symmetrical rock. However, researchers have recently taken a deeper look at the object and speculate that it may be a prehistoric sand sculpture of a stingray. If that's true, it would make the relic the oldest known artwork of another animal.

It was discovered in 2018 along the cliffs near Still Bay, about 330 kilometers (205 miles) east of Cape Town on South Africa's coast. Along with its remarkable symmetry, some noticed the rock's shape had an uncanny similarity to the shape of a stingray, albeit with its tail snapped off.

In a new study, researchers at Nelson Mandela University investigated this idea and concluded that the object was created as a sand sculpture to depict a blue stingray (Dasyatis chrysonata). The team overlaid images of a blue stingray, a native of Africa's southern coast, with the rocky object and highlighted how they closely match in size and proportions.

To create the object, they contend that a prehistoric human may have come across a stingray along the water's shore and traced around it, a bit like a child making a sandcastle.

"This is the first and thus far the only example that suggests tracing from this time period. The chances of something like this being preserved and amenable to our interpretation are remote, so it is possible that this may be the only example ever identified, but we can always hope that more will become apparent," Charles Helm, lead study author and Research Associate from the African Centre for Coastal Palaeoscience at Nelson Mandela University, told IFLScience.

An emergency effort is kicking off next week to help save endangered smalltooth sawfish, as their reported deaths has risen to 28.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Wednesday that it will begin a program to rescue and rehabilitate distressed sawfish to prevent further loss of the species.

In a press release announcing the effort, NOAA explained that it would be the first of its kind.

"If the opportunity presents itself, this would be the first attempt ever to rescue and rehabilitate smalltooth sawfish from the wild," said Adam Brame, NOAA Fisheries' sawfish recovery coordinator.

In addition to the 28 mortalities, at least 109 sawfish have been reported acting abnormally.
