Massive overhead boom in Northeast Oklahoma shakes doors and rattles windows - sonic boom from military fighter jet ruled out

Thousands of people across northeastern Oklahoma are asking the same question today: So what WAS it?

The "it" in this case was a very loud boom that was heard and felt at about 8 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014. Moments after it happened, the News On 6 social media accounts were jammed with people wanting to know if anyone else had heard and felt it.

The police and fire department scanners in the newsroom crackled to life with dispatchers telling crews in the field about all the calls to 911 about it.

People across the News On 6 viewing area reported a very similar experience: a boom loud enough to be heard indoors that shook windows and even rattled doors. It's understandable why they would want to know what caused it. That goes double for those of us here at News On 6.

Comment: So that rules military jets out then for all these overhead booms currently being reported in every state daily...

'Unexplained loud jolting booms' shake homes in Kentucky and Illinois

For the past two days in a row, people in the Local 6 area have reported hearing loud, jolting booms.

It's one of our most popular stories on facebook. The story we first posted Saturday night has more than 500 comments from people who say they have all heard and felt the same thing in counties across western Kentucky and southern Illinois. Public safety officials are trying to figure out what's causing the noise while people brace themselves for the next big boom.

Leon Cunningham has been living in Livingston County for more than 25 years and says he's familiar with the sights and sounds in his neighborhood. But, over the weekend, he heard something different. He said, "It was just... boom! I mean, you could hear it. It was loud." It was also jarring. "It just shook this whole neighborhood and shook all these houses. In here, stuff rattled on the shelves."

After all the trinkets settled, the rumors started. "Everybody was coming out in the neighborhood wondering what's going on. I've even had people say, 'Are we being invaded?'" One of many questions that there aren't any answers for yet. "We have no idea if there's going to be another one this evening, today, this afternoon, or what. We don't know how long this is going to continue or anything. Nobody does," said Cunningham.

Colonial Heights - CBS 6 News received a number of reports Sunday afternoon about another loud boom heard in parts of Central Virginia.

Ky's mum posted on the CBS 6 Facebook page that she heard the blast just after 4 p.m. at her home near the Colonial Heights-Chester line.

"This time it shook the house!" she wrote.

Ruth J Perry also posted on the CBS 6 Facebook page that she heard a "loud, explosion-type sound" on Chesterfield County's southside.

Diana Penn, who said this is the third boom she has heard this month, said the latest one at 4:10 p.m. was the closest one she has felt.

In fact, Penn said the first two blasts were from the southwest. She said Sunday's boom sounded closer - as if it was from the southeast and did not have the telltale rumble sound afterward,.

What was that boom? That's what many people in Rock Island were saying Tuesday morning, January 14, 2014.

People from all over Rock Island, as well as Milan and Moline, say they heard it around 6:50 a.m.

Questions came in from Twitter, Facebook as well as phone calls.

Did you hear that? They said they heard a loud boom sound that shook their house and rattled things hanging on the walls.

What made the sound?

We made a lot of calls to try to track down its origin.

We called the Rock Island Arsenal, fire departments, quarries and anyone we could think of who may have the answer.

Comment: Nope, it was probably yet another overhead meteor explosion.

Yet another overhead explosion in U.S.: Mysterious boom sound shakes Petersburg, Virginia area

Image
Area residents are wondering what's been causing loud booming sounds that have been heard throughout the region.

"We had two calls from the 1700 block of Westover Avenue this morning around 7:45 to 7:50," Petersburg Police spokeswoman Esther Hyatt said. She added that officers cleared up from the area when nothing was detected that would have caused the sound.

She added that others at the Petersburg Bureau of Police said that they heard the same noise this morning in Colonial Heights and that some had heard the sound last week and thought perhaps "it was military-related." But, officials at Fort Lee say it isn't their doing.

"We're not the source of the booms," said Stephen Baker, Fort Lee Public Affairs Officer. "We do sometimes do training at the range on post which sometimes involves the use of small explosives or simulators but nothing to the magnitude of what's been heard."

'Explosive' boom rattles central Virginia homes

CBS 6 News has received hundreds of tips since our story aired about mysterious booms being heard across Central Virginia. Some said the noises were so intense they rattled their homes.

Police and firefighters in Colonial Heights were called out to three different parts of the city Sunday after receiving calls about mysterious sounds.

"It's a loud, loud boom," Clint Lanier, who lives in Chesterfield County, told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil. "It' ain't no shotgun and it ain't no kind of gun. It's like an explosion."

Sgt. Rob Ruxer with Colonial Heights police said dispatchers received at least three calls just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday from citizens in separate areas of the city about a loud noise.

"There was a large boom. I thought it was thunder," Kelsey Barnes of Colonial Heights said. "It kind of shook the house a little bit, but I have no idea what it was."

Comment: Why on earth is this going on at this time?

Because it's raining meteor fireballs!

Learn to recognize the signs of an overhead explosion: Loud rumble and roar in Moore, Oklahoma, USA

Residents in Moore and southwest Oklahoma City took to Facebook after hearing a loud rumble and roar early Monday morning.

Some thought it was an earthquake while others had their own theories, like UFOs and aliens.

The sound Chris Martinez hears often in his Moore neighborhood is an unforgettable ringing.

Martinez said, "It's a loud sound then it completely stops."

Austin Holland, with the Oklahoma Geological Survey, said,"We looked at our seismic records and there's nothing that would indicate that this was associated with ground motion."

After ruling out an earthquake, seismologists said the sound could have traveled from somewhere else.

Experts said if it's a quick shaking, it's an earthquake.

If it's a large rumbling, it could be a big plane.

However, residents in the area have their own theory.

Comment: We have a feeling that the rumbling and roaring sound Moore residents heard on early Monday morning is different from the ringing sound the author of the article chose to concentrate on and ridicule. It's important to learn to recognize the real nature of the sounds, and not to fall for ludicrous explanations, such as this one: 'Frost-quakes' or overhead meteor explosions?
