Volcanoes that have been quiet for decades are rumbling to life in the eastern Caribbean, prompting officials to issue alerts in Martinique and St Vincent and the Grenadines as scientists rush in to study activity they say has not been observed in years.

The most recent warning was issued late on Tuesday for La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines, a chain of islands home to more than 100,000 people. Officials reported tremors, strong gas emissions, formation of a new volcanic dome and changes to its crater lake.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency said that scientists observed an "effusive eruption within the crater, with visible gas and steam" on Tuesday.

The government warned those living near the volcano to prepare to evacuate if needed, declaring an orange alert that means eruptions could occur with less than 24 hours' notice.

La Soufriere, located near the northern tip of the main island of St Vincent, last erupted in 1979, and a previous eruption in 1902 killed some 1,600 people. That occurred shortly before Martinique's Mt Pelee erupted and destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre, killing more than 30,000 people.

Volcano erupts on southwestern Japan island, alert level raised

Mt. Otake on Suwanose Island

Mt. Otake on Suwanose Island
A volcano on a southwestern Japan island erupted early Monday, the weather agency said, warning of the potential for big rocks being hurled into the air within about a 2-kilometer radius of the crater.

The eruption occurred at the crater of Mt. Otake on Suwanose Island of Kagoshima Prefecture at 2:48 a.m., prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to raise the volcanic activity alert level by one notch to 3 on a scale of 5, meaning that people should not approach the crater. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Following the eruption, the Japanese government set up a liaison office at the prime minister's office to gather information.

4 earthquakes recorded in 24 hours on Mayon Volcano, Philippines

Mayon Volcano
Four earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours as it remained under Alert Level 1 status, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Saturday.

"Mayon Volcano's monitoring network recorded four (4) volcanic earthquakes during the 24-hour observation period," state volcanologists said in a statement.

Phivolcs, likewise, noted that there is "moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that crept downslope" on the volcano.

Phivolcs also reminded residents living near the volcano to be vigilant because it is still at abnormal condition.

Strong glow continues to be active at Suwanosejima volcano
Intense explosive activity of the volcano continues characterized by near-constant eruptions.

Strombolian explosions become stronger than the average size of explosions at the volcano and more frequent at regular intervals of 2 to 4 per hour during the past few weeks.

An explosions generated an ash plumes which reached approx. 1,968 ft-3,937 ft (600 m-1,200 m) altitude and drifted SW.

Some of a lava bombs were ejected as far as 800 m away from the crater.

A spectacular vulcanic explosion occurred from the crater at 12:20 local time today as volcanological observatory KVERT reported.

Plume of ash rose to an altitude of 16,000 ft (4,876 m) and formed relatively large umbrella region in the upper part of the eruption column as can be seen in the image.

A few hours later, at 19:30 local time on today evening, another strong explosion detected by Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Tokyo produced spectacular ash plume rising up to 28,000 ft (8,500 m) altitude and extended about 130 km to the southeast of the volcano.
