Shiveluch eruption in Russia's Kamchatka sends ash plume 3.7 miles into sky

The Shiveluch volcano, located in Russia's Kamchatka Territory, belched column of ash 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) above sea level into the sky on Thursday, the local branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian academy of Sciences (GS RAS) told Sputnik.

"Video data have shown that early on Thursday, Shiveluch volcano was registered to spew a column of ash to the altitude of 6,000 meters above the sea level. The ash cloud is stretching to the northeast of the volcano," the agency's representative said.

According to the local branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, no ash fallout has been registered in nearby settlements.

Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano in Kamchatka. The volcano has been active since November 2018.

Possible disruptions at Catania Airport in southern Italy were reported early Wednesday after Mount Etna erupted sending ash clouds over the island of Sicily. The crisis unit of the Sac, the company that manages the international airport of Fontanarossa, ordered some restriction on landings, local media reported.

While take-offs have not been affected so far, the airport warned of possible delays to travel following the explosion of Europe's most active volcano.

In January, the airport was closed after Etna began erupting. In December the volcano exploded on Christmas Eve sending a series of earthquakes. Mount Etna, a stratovolcano located on the east coast of the island of Sicily, has been erupting since as far back as 1500 B.C. The volcano stands as the tallest in Europe at 10,922 feet high and is located about 31 miles near Catania-Fontanarossa Airport.

The restless Popocatépetl volcano had a very active 24 hours starting yesterday morning, with several explosions and ash plumes that rose as high as two kilometers above the mountain.

The National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) said this morning it had identified 20 gas and water vapor exhalations at El Popo, with the first three recorded yesterday at 9:56am. The most recent was recorded this morning at 7:04.

Wind sent the ash in a north-northeast direction away from the crater.

There were also two recorded episodes of harmonic tremors — a sustained release of seismic and infrasonic energy typically associated with the underground movement of magma — lasting five and 10 hours respectively.

Mount Bromo in East Java erupted on Monday Morning, emitting a 600-meter-high ash column into the air, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported.

The PVMBG said the eruption occurred at around 6 a.m., causing tremors with an amplitude of 0.5 to 1 millimeters.

The ash moved in a northwesterly direction from the 2,929-kilometer-high mountain.

The Dukono volcano in Indonesia has erupted over the past few days, ejecting columns of ash high into the air, just months after violent activity from Mount Agung shook the nation.

Indonesia's Mount Dukono - based on Halmahera island to the east of the country - has been ejecting ash over the last day, with a continuous fog exploding from the main crater, according to Indonesia's volcanic survey. Indonesia's 127 active volcanoes all pose significant risks to some five million people living nearby. Mount Agung alone killed more than 1,000 people in March last year. While Mount Dukono is not quite as dangerous yet, it is one of the country's most active volcanoes.

The eruption of little-known volcano Mount Karangetang in Siau Island, North Sulawesi, has added to the list of active volcanoes that have recently awakened in the archipelago, home to more than 230 million people.

Indonesia has more than 120 volcanoes, 20 of which have been considered to be the most active, according to the latest data from the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG).

The most active volcanoes are placed into three alert levels by local authorities: level II of Waspada (Caution), level III of Siaga (Alert) and level IV of Awas (Danger) - the highest on the alert level.

Here are five of the most active volcanoes that have rumbled recently:

Mount Karangetang

Mount Karangetang in Siau Island, North Sulawesi, located roughly 146 kilometers from the provincial capital of Manado, has been erupting since November last year. Its activity has only increased since then, prompting the PVMBG to declare an Alert status in December.

As of Sunday, local observation posts said that volcanic activity had been fluctuating, with a number of volcanic earthquakes occurring in the last several days. Officials also observed a flow of lava from one of the craters.
