The city of Athens with the Parthenon temple atop the ancient Acropolis hill is covered with snow during a snowfall, on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022.The wave of bad weather hitting Greece is forecast to continue through Tuesday, and has seen snow falling even on some islands. Authorities have warned the public to avoid all but essential outdoor movement, and several major roads and highways are passable only with snow chains.
Athens, Greece — Heavy snowfall disrupted air and road traffic Monday in the Greek capital of Athens and neighboring Turkey's largest city of Istanbul, while most of Greece, including — unusually — several Aegean islands, and much of Turkey were blanketed by snow.

The storm, named in Greece Elpida, or "hope," snarled traffic in both Athens and Istanbul, a metropolis of 16 million people.

Flights in and out of Istanbul Airport were suspended until 4 a.m. Tuesday (0100 GMT). Authorities worked to clear runways and a road leading to the airport, where the roof of a facility used by Turkish Airlines' cargo department collapsed from the weight of snow. No one was hurt.

Authorities in Istanbul also suspended intercity bus services and temporarily blocked travel to the city from Turkey's Thrace region. People stranded on roads abandoned vehicles to walk home or crowded subway and other public transportation stations. Schools across Turkey are closed for a winter break, but universities halted classes for two days. Public offices and shopping malls closed early to ease rush-hour congestion.

Flurries were forecast to continue over the next few days in Istanbul. The Turkish city's Disaster Coordination Center AKOM said an Icelandic low-pressure system is behind the cold front and precipitation.

In Greece, authorities warned the public to limit outdoor movements to only essential ones on Monday and Tuesday, while schools in many areas were closed. Government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou said more than 46,000 school classes were being held online.

Heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh since Saturday night has brought life to a standstill, particularly in tribal areas.

More than 730 roads, including four national highways, have been blocked for traffic due to the inclement weather.

Maximum 289 roads are closed in Shimla and 181 in Lahaul-Spiti.

Lahaul-Spiti superintendent of police Manav Verma said the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang (ATR) has been closed for traffic.

The Manali-Leh highway is closed for all types of vehicles (from Solang to Sissu) due to heavy snowfall in Lahaul Valley.
There is almost three feet of snow in the Valley. The weather is mostly cloudy and snowfall is continuing, he said.

Over 700 electricity transformers, mostly in Shimla, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba have been hit due to the snowfall, causing the suspension of power supply in the remote areas. Over 100 water supply schemes have also been hit.

A remote coastal town in Western Australia, Onslow, registered a temperature of 50.7C, matching its hottest ever recorded temperature. The record was first set in 1960.

While several parts of the globe are battling extremely cold conditions, Australia is recording high temperatures.

Not just Onslow, but other Western Australian sites including Roebourne airport and Mardie also hit 50.5C.

Several other towns in the region are also likely to set temperature records for January or any time of the year. Iron-ore export hub Karratha reached 48.4C as it exceeded its previous high of 48.2C.

Temperatures had plummeted to -2C
Stunning images of sand dunes in the Sahara desert covered in snow have been captured by a photographer.

The desert is more commonly known for its hot and dry climate so this incredible sight is very rare occurence.

Temperatures had plummeted to -2C when Karim Bouchetata took the photos on Tuesday near the town of Ain Sefra in northwest Algeria yesterday.

The area has seen snow before due to it being surrounded by the Atlas Mountains and 1,000 metres above sea level.

But the phenomenon is still rare as it has seen snow just five times in the last 24 years - in 1979, 2016, 2018 and 2021.

It is winter at its worst for Turkey this week as snowfall and blizzards set in, spelling trouble for the population in most of the country's 81 provinces. Traffic disruption and difficulty in accessing remote locations are among the major woes of the public.

Thousands of people were stranded on a highway connecting the country's southern provinces as heavy snowfall and a blizzard hit the region late Tuesday and Wednesday. Some 2,800 people trapped in their cars in motionless traffic were evacuated by crews.

Gaziantep Governor Davut Gül said that the stranded people were motorists and passengers on Tarsus-Adana-Gaziantep Motorway (TAG), which was closed to traffic on Tuesday night. Gül told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they prioritized the sick among the stranded and each of them was taken to the nearest hospitals. Around 186 people in need of medical care were evacuated to hospitals. He said the crews also distributed food to some 7,000 people on the highway where the vehicles could not move to low visibility and thick snow.

Gül said crews helped 1,780 vehicles stuck on the road but "at least 2,800 more people" were still stranded. Social media was flooded with messages about people waiting for help for hours on Tuesday night and early hours of Wednesday.

A major winter storm is creating havoc with cars, trucks and buses getting stuck in the snow all around the Greater Toronto Area.

The snow came down quickly overnight with vehicles no match against the storm.

It's estimated that over 30 cm of snow fell overnight and during the morning commute forcing police to shut down major highways.

But as Marianne Dimain reports, the kindness of strangers is helping people keep moving as their cars get stuck in one of the biggest snow storms to hit southern Ontario in years.
