The director of the Snow Hydrology Research to Operations Lab at the University of Utah said she could have never predicted that her equipment at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon would ever be buried by snow. But that's exactly what happened.
"The snow really has not stopped," said McKenzie Skiles, an assistant professor at the University of Utah, and head of the Snow Hydrology Research to Operations Lab. "This winter we've just been getting storm after storm after storm, and we have finally just matched the record for peak snow water equivalent that was set in 83."
That record was later eclipsed in the afternoon. We caught up with her today in the midst of a snow squall, which seemed like the perfect setting.

Five resorts have now exceeded 700″; three in California and two in Utah.

A British teenager has died in an avalanche while skiing in Switzerland
Search teams are currently looking for a second person who remains buried in the snow after the incident on Tuesday (22 March) in the resort area of Meiringen.
Police in Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland area received a report shortly before 4.25pm on Tuesday that an avalanche had occurred which left two skiers buried under the snow. Officers say according to initial investigations, the two skiers were part of a larger ski tour group.
They suggested that the avalanche was triggered when the two went down the Gstelliwang slope on the Wellhorn mountain, which has a height of more than 2,100m.

The city of Buffalo got absolutely blanketed in snow this Winter. The recorded snow total for Buffalo has reached an eye-watering 133.3″ so far. That is 44.1″ above normal for Buffalo.

Suffice it to say a flamethrower might be needed to thaw this SUV out that was left parked too close to Lake Erie. It turned into a legitimate ice cube.

According to officials, snowfall ranging between two inches to one foot was recorded in different high-altitude areas, including Kota Top, Jatani, Kansar, Thanhala, Baach Dhar, Shankhoja, Chenera, Kaljugasar and Sivili.
Amid the continuous snowfall, the district administration has issued an advisory asking people not to venture near avalanche-prone areas and has also suspended vehicular traffic on Bhaderwah-Basohli-Pathankot and Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate roads.
The heavy rain and snowmelt led to widespread flooding around rivers and creeks, most notably in Porterville and Kernville in central California. Here, the rivers overflowed, resulting in mandatory evacuations for the surrounding communities.
The southern Sierra has benefited the most from the active winter season. Soda Springs, CA has received over 56 feet of snow this season, making this season the 2nd snowiest since records started in 1946! We are about 11 feet shy of the record 1951-52 year but with more snow in the forecast, we will get awfully close in the next couple of weeks.
Two skiers died over the weekend in separate avalanches in Colorado's high county.
These deaths now brings the total number of people killed by avalanches in Colorado to nine so far this season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and the Pitikin County Sheriff's Office..
According to the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office, reports of the Marble avalanche were received just before 6 p.m. local time on Friday.
One of the men trapped by the avalanche was able to exit the backcountry and was taken to a hospital for treatment. A second victim needed to be rescued via helicopter, and the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post that the third victim remained missing for some time.
The avalanche hurtled toward the Slopestyle course.
US Freestyle skier Cody La Plante shared footage in his Instagram stories of the avalanche mercilessly making its way towards the Slopestyle course and skiers, course officials, and shapers scrambling to get away from the snow plumes. According to La Plante, everyone is okay, but qualifiers had to be postponed by a day.
Other athletes who captured incredible footage of the avalanche include Sweden's Jesper Tjäder and Switzerland's Andri Ragettli.
