Oops! Scientists who claimed Arctic ice would melt entirely by September 2016 got it badly wrong

Dire predictions that the Arctic would be devoid of sea ice by September this year have proven to be unfounded after latest satellite images showed there is far more now than in 2012.

Scientists such as Prof Peter Wadhams, of Cambridge University, and Prof Wieslaw Maslowski, of the Naval Postgraduate School in Moderey, California, have regularly forecast the loss of ice by 2016, which has been widely reported by the BBC and other media outlets.

Prof Wadhams, a leading expert on Arctic sea ice loss, has recently published a book entitled A Farewell To Ice in which he repeats the assertion that the polar region would free of ice in the middle of this decade.

As late as this summer, he was still predicting an ice-free September.

Yet, when figures were released for the yearly minimum on September 10, they showed that there was still 1.6 million square miles of sea ice (4.14 square kilometres), which was 21 per cent more than the lowest point in 2012.

Perth, Australia shivers through record cold

If you thought it was unseasonably cold in Perth this month, you weren't mistaken.

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed what everyone in the city was thinking this month - that it was much colder than usual for this time of year.

It was the coldest September since records started in Mount Lawley - where the city's weather station is based - with temperatures reaching an average of just 18.5 degrees Celsius.

Records have been held at the station since 1994.

The temperature is almost three degrees colder than the usual average temperature of 20.4C.

Overnight, an extra blanket was a must with the average temperature just 7.6C - two degrees colder than usual.

At Perth Airport, where records stretch back decades, overnight temperatures haven't been this cold in September since 1944.

Comment: As the global warming hoax spirals out of control, evidence suggests that the world is on the brink of a new ice age.

Winter has come early at Mount Washington.

The resort got doused with a good amount of snow overnight.

Here's the view from the webcam located at the base of the mountain.

Families came up to play in the snow and enjoy some fall sledding.

The mountain is not open.

But if these conditions continue, it could be an early and strong start to the season.

DiCaprio calls for "deniers" to be banned from public office

Climate advocate Leonardo DiCaprio has called for climate "deniers" to be banned from public office. President Obama, sharing a stage with DiCaprio, did not object - Obama's words in my opinion appear to actually lend some support to DiCaprio's outrageous demand, for limiting the US people's freedom to choose leaders who represent their views.
DiCaprio: Climate change doubters shouldn't hold public office

Politicians who don't believe in climate change should not hold public office, said actor Leonardo DiCaprio Monday at the White House before the screening of his new climate documentary.

"The scientific consensus is in and the argument is now over," DiCaprio said at the White House's South By South Lawn event.

"If you do not believe in climate change, you do not believe in facts or in science or empirical truths and therefore, in my humble opinion, should not be allowed to hold public office."

...

"Climate change is almost perversely designed to be really hard to solve politically. It is a problem that creeps up on you," Obama said.

"The political system in every country is not well-designed to do something tough now to solve a problem that people will really feel the impact of in the future."

Environment Canada says we've set a new record for snowfall on October 1. On Saturday, Fort St. John received 23 cm of snow with another centimetre on Friday.

The old snowfall record for October 1 was set in 1954 with 6.6 cm of snow.

Almost all the power has been restored in the region after 4,000 customers were without power during the height of the storm Saturday afternoon. Less than five customers are still waiting for Hydro to restore power near Mile 70 of the Alaska Highway.

The heavy snow damaged trees all over the community, leaving residents to clean up branches in yards and streets. There are no reports of any serious damage. If you have photos of the storm, you'd like to share, email news@moosefm.ca

The forecast calls for the temperature to improve today to plus 4 and 6 degrees on Monday. Roads in the region remain slippery with slushy sections. For the latest road reports, visit www.drivebc.ca

Hong Kong records hottest September day in 50 years, air pollution levels 'serious' for second day

Hong Kong recorded its hottest September day in more than half a century on Tuesday as the influence of Typhoon Megi brought "serious" levels of air pollution to the city for a second day.

Temperatures hit a high of 36 degrees Celsius in Happy Valley as Taiwan felt the full force of the tropical cyclone, which is forecast to bring gloomy weather to Hong Kong over the next six days.

The Environmental Protection Department issued a warning after the Air Quality Health Index in Tuen Mun and Tung Chung hit 10+ on Tuesday afternoon, its highest level. That indicates a serious health risk.

It was the second day the city recorded such severe levels of air pollution.

The index in Central reached 10, and it climbed to nine in Yuen Long and Causeway Bay, indicating a "very high" health risk.

The department advised children, the elderly and people suffering from heart or respiratory illnesses to stay indoors as much as possible.

Typhoon Megi, named after the Korean word for catfish, made landfall in Taiwan but was forecast to spare Hong Kong. The storm however created stifling conditions in the city on Tuesday, with low visibility and a maximum temperature at the Observatory's headquarters of 34.9 degrees, constituting the hottest September day since 1963, when September 5 saw the same location record 35.2 degrees.

Winter arrived early in eastern Turkey's Erzurum province as the city center saw the season's first snowfall on Friday as temperatures in the city fell below one degree celsius.

Snowfall is not unusual for Erciyes, Kösedağ or Arkut, the mountain regions of Turkey in September. But the change in weather still came as a bit of a shock to inhabitants of the highest city of Turkey when they woke up to their city center covered in a layer of snow.

The major ski centers in the country have also already recorded the season's first snow. The snow depth in Erzurum's Palandöken Ski Center now stands at 12 centimeters, while another ski resort, Kartalkaya, has also received significant snowfall.

We're still a day-and-a-half away from the start of the fall season, but it sure doesn't look that way in Alberta's mountains and foothills.

According to the Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Centre of Environment Canada, wet snow started falling near Banff and Highway 93 early Tuesday morning.

As of 4:30 p.m., Environment Canada confirmed to Global News that areas in Banff received 32 centimetres of snow, while areas near Sundre received at least 30 centimetres.

Albertans have taken to social media with their updates on the wintry weather.

Tom Graham shared his snow photos early Tuesday morning in the Kananaskis Valley.

Surprise snowstorm brings blizzard to Yellowstone National Park

Christmas has come early at Yellowstone National Park after a surprise snowstorm granted visitors an unexpected opportunity to capture stunning photos of the blanketed national park.

Four to eight inches of snow were forecast to fall up until late Monday night with further snowfall also expected early Tuesday as temperatures dropped to 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius).

A recent study carried out by the Yellowstone Center for Resources noted that the annual amount of snowfall and number of days of snow cover at the park were declining significantly.
This is not the first time, however, the park has been hit by a freak snowstorm. In 2014 snow came even earlier to the region, sweeping across the park at the end of August.

September temperatures in Yellowstone - which extends into Wyoming, Idaho and Montana - usually range between 37 degrees Fahrenheit and 68 degrees Fahrenheit while the average total snowfall for the month is half an inch.

The unexpected wintry blast hasn't deterred snap-happy enthusiasts who braved the conditions to capture some spectacular photos of America's first national park.
