Over 1,500 still stranded in snow-marooned Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, India

Over 1,500 tourists are still stranded in snow-marooned Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, officials said on Wednesday adding that the evacuation is on but it might take days.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has instructed officials to evacuate those stranded on a priority basis, a statement said.

A total of 300 people were evacuated by Tuesday evening most of whom were faculty and students from IITs Mandi, Roorkee, Guwahati and Mumbai and some foreigners.

On Wednesday as the weather cleared, the state government and the Indian Air Force (IAF) stepped up their efforts to airlift tourists stranded for the past four days.

Three centimetres of early snow recorded in the Tatra mountains in Slovakia

A Štrbské Pleso resort in the High Tatras was white, covered with three centimetres of fresh snow on the morning of September 25, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) wrote on its Facebook profile.

"In the arctic air that appeared on the night from Monday to Tuesday, we witnessed on our territory snow showers or snow already from around 900 metres above sea level, sometimes even lower," the meteorologists wrote, as cited by the TASR newswire.

Starting with 1,000 to 1,100 metres above sea level, a snow cover temporarily arose in some places in Slovakia. At Štrbské Pleso, there were three centimetres of snow.

"Snowing occurs from time to time in Štrbské Pleso by the end of September - but the incidence of continuous snow cover in the third week of September in this locality is quite a rarity," the meteorologists summed up.

Comment: On the same date across other parts of southeastern Europe early snowfall was noted in Romania, Ukraine and Bulgaria.

Early snowfall hits Sibiu, Romania

The temperature is minus six degrees.

In the County of Sibiu, situated in the Central part of Romania, the first snow fell on the road works snow removal equipment. This was informed in the Office of County transport.

"In the highways of the County on Tuesday morning the snow thickness in some places is 6 cm", - stated in the message.

According to the Romanian meteorologists, air temperature in this region reached in the night from Monday to Tuesday -6 degrees with a frost.

Traffic police warns the owners of vehicles not to drive on the roads without winter equipment of the vehicles.

Forecasters warned that the storm will last until Friday, September 28.

Snow falls in Ukraine's Carpathian mountains

On September 25, the first snow fell in the mountainous regions of Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Snow fell on Pip Ivan of the Chornohora mountain range on the border with Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions, the Chornohora range search and rescue post reported on the Facebook page.

"As of 7:20 am, September 25, it was snowing on Pip Ivan Mountain in the Carpathians. The wind was 5-6 m / s. The temperature was -5°C," the report reads.

As Ukrinform reported, ground frosts and wind gusts up to 20 m / s are expected in Ukraine in the coming days.

Early autumn snow falls on Botev Peak, Bulgaria

The first snow of the new season in Bulgaria fell on Botev Peak in the Stara Planina mountain range on September 25, web camera footage from the mountain showed.

At 2056 metres, Botev Peak is not among the top 10 highest mountain peaks in Bulgaria.

After a cold front entered the region, Bulgaria saw drastically dropping temperatures and strong winds that caused damage in several parts of the country.

Part of the insulation of a high school in Montana was brought down by the wind, reports on September 25 said.

20 rescued from Rohtang Pass after 4 foot of fresh snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, India

At least 20 stranded people have been rescued from the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) official said.

They were stranded due to the closure of the Rohtang Pass after heavy snowfall, Lieutenant Colonel D S Bisht said.

After getting information, a General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) truck was sent and they were brought to Manali safely with the help of Col A K Awasthi and Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus, Bisht said.

Rohtang Pass witnessed about four feet of fresh snowfall on Sunday. The people should take utmost care while coming out of their homes in the area, the officer added.

2 foot of September snow in 24 hours damages apple, potato crops in Himachal Pradesh, India

The apple, pea and potato crops in Lahaul have been badly damaged in two feet of snow recorded in the tribal valley for the last 24 hours cutting the district from the rest of the state.

Rohtang Pass and Rohtang Tunnel, south and north portal, recorded over I feet of snow bringing all work to close as cold wave swept the region, said residents and Border Roads Organisation engineers.

Three bridges were washed away in Kullu and Manali.

"We never experienced such a loss to crops in the past and snow in September," rued Prem Lal and Himal Thakur, farmers from Lahaul.

Photos from Whistler Blackcomb show a significant dusting of snow at the peak of Whistler Mountain.

The last opportunity to walk the Raven's Eye Cliff Walk and Raven's Eye Cliff Walk was interrupted by snow.

A webcam located 2,182 metres at the Whistler Peak showed a thin layer of snow covering the ground on Tuesday.
