Heavy, wet snow weighs down tree branches in Cloquet Thursday morning.
Winter struck back with record May snowfalls over the past two days — coating the Northland in snow, and causing weather alerts lasting until 11 a.m. today.

All told, 10.6 inches of snow accumulated at Duluth International Airport, a record for May that also included a single day record of 8.3 on Wednesday alone. It was the snowiest May day on record since 5.5 inches fell in 1902.

Lake freighters and ships were moving all over the east end of Lake Superior but were hesitant on the western tip, where few moved out on the open water as the National Weather Service warning for gale force winds remained in effect.

Gusts up to 40 mph were reported on the lake with waves reaching 9-11 feet.

On Monday, Hungary experienced unexpectedly cold weather. Even though spring appeared to be well on its way, it suddenly took a step backwards, surprising people with snow. Hungarians haven't experienced May temperatures this low since 1886, the Hungarian Meteorological Service reports.

As seen in the photo above, people traveling near Kékestető suddenly found themselves in the midst of winter again on May 6th.

On the 2nd of March, snowdrops were spotted in the arboretum of Alcsútdoboz, signaling the start of Spring. Considering the sudden change of weather, however, they might've been too early.

Nearly 300 destructive avalanches during 'dramatic' Swiss winter

A 300-metre wide avalanche hit the restaurant of the Hotel Säntis in Schwägalp, eastern Switzerland on January 10th.
© Kantonspolizei Appenzell AusserrhodenA 300-metre wide avalanche hit the restaurant of the Hotel Säntis in Schwägalp, eastern Switzerland on January 10th.
A total of 299 avalanches causing property damage or injury were reported in Switzerland up to the end of April while 19 people lost their lives.

That is the balance provided by Switzerland's WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) in a report published on Tuesday.

All but one of the 19 people killed in avalanches during the winter were participating in outdoor sports in unsecured terrain, the SLF said. The only exception was a ski patroller who died on an open ski run in the canton of Valais.

In late April, in what was the deadliest single avalanche accident of the season, four Germans were killed - also in Valais.

Up to 50cm of snow is expected from the Antarctic front although it may not last on the ground as warmer weather is expected to arrive next week.

"2-3cm of fresh snow fell in the village this morning. We are expecting 40-50cm Thursday and Friday. Bring on the 2019 snow season!" said a Falls Creek spokesperson.

Cold May weather in France breaks 50-year records

Cold temps in France
Temperatures across France reached new lows for May this week, with some areas well into minus figures
Cold weather in France has broken 50-year records for the month of May this week, from the Oise to Corsica, Météo France has said.

A forecaster spokesperson said that from May 4-6, "a mass of cold polar air directly from the Arctic [hit, leading to] frosts over lowlands to the foothills of the Pyrenees, often in the range of 0°C to -2°C. Some records, some more than 50 years old, were broken."

Among the longest-standing records broken were those registered at Barcelonnette, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (-7.4°C), a weather station that had been open since 1959, which previously had a cold record for May dating back to 1979.

The coldest temperature of -10°C was recorded at a weather station in Alpe-d'Huez (Isère) on Monday night (May 6), with the same station recording -7.7°C later that day, less than its lowest ever May temperature of 7.5°C, which was recorded on May 8, 1997.

A station in Beauvais (Oise) - which has been keeping track since 1944 - broke its own 1957 record when the temperature dropped to -2.4°C, while La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime) broke a 1951 record with 1.94°C.

Brest (Finistère) - whose station dates back to 1945 - broke its record of 0°C in May 1945 and 1979, with a new low of -0.2 °C.

Records were also broken in Auch (Gers), Vic-en-Bigorre (Hautes-Pyrénées) and Biscarosse (Landes).

Did you know that snow is actually falling in Croatia? May can be a spring month as much as it likes, the tiny white bits of frost can still manage to reach the soil from white clouds. Although not very usual, small outbursts of winter weather can still happen in Central Europe during this time of the year. One such situation has happened last week. Just when people began to experiment with short sleeves in Croatia, a drop in temperature led to winter coats being retaken from the closets.

You didn't have to travel in the highlands of Lika to enjoy the frozen layer. If being in Capital, all you had to do is make a short climb to Medvednica Mountain. Our photo reporter Marko Todorov did precisely that, leading to the footage you can view below:

Around 30 people were treated for hypothermia at an outdoor techno music festival in France after unexpected snowfall left many ravers sheltering under survival blankets distributed by the Red Cross.

Around 10,000 people attended the unauthorized Teknival 2019 festival in the central Creuse region at the weekend, where temperatures dropped to -3 degrees Celsius (27 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight on Saturday to Sunday.

Around 30 people were treated for hypothermia at the scene and two were taken to hospital, local officials told AFP, with the several centimeters (inches) of snow turning the festival camping experience into an endurance test.
